The game I have followed and enjoyed watching for over 50 years has become, in my short sighted opinion, an absolute cluster f***. I, like many of you, can remember the day when you had the opportunity to watch the game of the week on Saturday afternoons and that was basically all. Now, you can watch a Saturday of football for almost 16 hours non stop and more if you live in the right time zone. College football made many weekends for me and my family what it was growing up. We planned around that game during the week and made adjustments when and where necessary. Now, this game, like many facets of life, has become all about the dollar. I am not surprised, but in my opinion it’s a sad state of affairs. This league, that league, who’s going, who’s coming, which conference has the biggest media deal and so forth now dominates the landscape of this once great sport.

I guess we just go along for the ride and see what happens when the dust settles with all this BS. Conferences come and go as we all know, and I would venture a guess that in the next 20 or so years there will be an even bigger seismic shift in conference alignment. It will all depend who, will come out with the cash and throw it around to see who they can lure into their conference, revenue stream, and media outlet. it has in my opinion ruined what I believe to be one of the greatest games in this country.

i now appreciate more than ever when GT played arguably one of the toughest conference schedules when they played Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, and ugag and we were in the damn ACC. It is what it is and the only parameter for the next change in this once great sport is WHO HAS THE MOST CASH TO OFFER UP.

I will watch GT football this Fall and I will make a game or two, but for the first time in several decades I’m not sure how much more of the game I will watch other than that.

My apologies for the length and rant, I shall now return to my cocoon..

I’ve gone back and forth so many times, I gave up thinking I knew where this or we are going to end up. So, like all the good coaches say, just going to focus on the next game and try not to think too much beyond that.

That’s about what we are relegated to Burdell

So what in fact is the issue that you are now realizing or accepting? Have you believed for the last generation that we were among the elite that had an annual chance at national prominence? What’s different now? Has your previous optimism been driven by the hope that others that played the system well would stumble and that the blessings of a heavy focus on athletics would turn and be bestowed on those that marginalized such an effort? Have you simply been comfortable to ride the dream that the next coach would lead us back to 1952?
No doubt hope is a big driver of things, otherwise the casinos would go out of business. Often, however, things can be just as enjoyable as humble pastimes, unless a new determination to be the best is embraced, something few would say has been the general nature of most things for GT football since the 90’s, if not long before.
I get your general point, but in some ways, things aren’t all together as different now as they have been. We’ll win some games and our students and fans can have fun. Cheer up!

Hey, man. Great to see you posting again. I actually made reference to you a few weeks back, regarding your brother. Someone, and I don't remember who or exactly what they said, mentioned that your brother got all kind of crap thrown at him for signing with Tech instead of with the cesspool. I mentioned you at the time, because I wondered if you might have anything to say about that. Did the mutts dump on John, and perhaps your entire family, for signing with Tech?

Cue the "it's always been about money" argument. To prebut that argument: It can be less or more about money, and now it's more about money than ever. De facto professional football.

Recruiting then and now is like dating versus prostitution. And one-night stands versus relationships. You used to have to entice recruits, charm them, maybe even get them to attend a place for the right reasons, and it was a long-term commitment. Now it's just who can pay the most year over year.

Supersize, It was definitely an interesting time in our family. our family business was threatened and somewhat our family. Several people were not happy he signed with Georgia Tech. Our parents were treated not so kindly by ugag coaching staff on his official visit. Many in our small community basically disowned us including family members. Good thing there wasn’t social media back then…

hope you have been well. Hopefully we can meet during the coming season at a game. I plan on trying to make a couple of games in October and November.

Excellent points justafan. It’s a completely different world than it was say in the 80’s and 90’s. Money is the driver and the recruits are the vehicle.

Definitely hope we get to meet this year.

It's always been about money, but it hasn't always been so exclusively about TV money. The other big thing is the increased efficiency in how the money is used and gathered.

Finishing top ten, winning the orange bowl, and winning the conference. I feel you’re a “Let’s go to the game, we can leave by halftime and go to the dinner party” kind of guy.

All of this is for the better. NIL, the portal, and teams moving around is making this sport better. Most of you have created this pure image in your head and have lived in your own make believe bubble regarding college football. The sport has been run by bowl cartels for years while the governing body gave out punishment based on the have or have nots system. Do you not remember how the Orange Bowl gave ND an invite in October of 1990 and the governing body was fine with it. Do you not remember how we were put on probation and stripped of a conference title all while UGA, Auburn, Clemson, Bama, and FSU (just to name a few teams within a couple hours from us) have paid players under the table and had car dealerships giving players cars for decades - and not one of them has even been accused let alone investigated by the governing body.

Money is what will bring fairness. TV execs just want content.. They just want games people will watch. This will lead to a big time post season tournament where many more teams than the elite chosen are invited. Think about it - GT could go 12-1 this season and we would not be invited to the playoff if we lose the ACC championship game. Meanwhile, we’ve seen the elites have rematches in the title game and have seen them get invited while sitting at home on championship Saturday. That’s why this push for money will stop all that and give everyone the same mulligan that a 1 loss SEC team gets every year.

CFB feels like a bush pro league now.

Lotterys back in the day weren't for billions either, different but very much same scenerio.

100%. College football is dead. NIL, the transfer portal, constant conference consolidation etc., there’s nothing left of what we loved about it from only a few years ago.

Agree. Just try to enjoy the season. Congress will involve itself at some point and then who knows what happens? Anyone who says they know is full of $&#@.

…Tech could go 20-0 in whatever conference we end up in after the ACC folds and the rest of the country wouldn’t even know to look.
