State of College Football….

CFB feels like a bush pro league now.
So you didn’t think it was bush league when Vince Dooley gave Herschel a car to get him to sign? You didn’t think it was bush league when Auburn bought Cam on the open market? You didn’t think it was bush league when USC was buying houses for players mamas? How about when a Clemson recruit posted a photo of himself with stacks of benjamins? I haven’t even mentioned Pate Dye, Barry Switzer, Bear Bryant, Howard Schnellenberger, Bo Schembechler, Bobby Bowden yet.

I’ll take today over any time in the past. Why so many people buy the myth of the past is beyond me. It was waaaay more corrupt in the past than it is now. If you can‘t stand the thought of different teams playing each other now then simply don’t watch. I know I can’t wait to watch my GT team play all these upcoming glamorous games against these same boring teams we see every year. At least we get to play Ole Miss to add a little excitement to our schedule.

100%. College football is dead. NIL, the transfer portal, constant conference consolidation etc., there’s nothing left of what we loved about it from only a few years ago.
So you loved it a few years back when Auburn was buying Cam yet teams like GT were getting titles stripped. Cool.

Yes, I prefered the sport back when it was still mostly regional conferences and it was still possible to have success doing things mostly based on selling recruits on the school and the program, even though the title would probably be won by a team that cheated by splashing some money on some big name players.

To me, that's better than a sport where the regional conferences have been destroyed, it's not really possible to have success just by selling the school and the program, and everyone is splashing money on almost all players. That's not as fun to me, even if it is less corrupt.

I don't think we can just keep comparing to 5-10- or 20 years ago. The whole body of work has degraded from what collegiate sports started out as.

If team USA beat the Soviets in ice hockey today, it would not have near the same impact it did in 1980.

While there are some very talented golfers out there, it's still not as amazing as what the golden bear was doing when he was making less than a bankers salary in the 60s.

Watching wilt Chamberlain come out and dominate night after night for what some of these bench guys make per game a year now is insane to think about.

Inflation is inflation sure and these kids deserve not to have to worry about eating and housing but they haven't done anything so amazing yet they need to be paid 1 mil a year for it. IMO shove that out to the firefighters and teachers.

It isn't going back though.

Going to be hilarious watching the Media and "Academic" whores explain how these cross country alliances are going to work out for sports like basketball where they often play twice a week? Can't wait for a reporter to ask a School President or one these whore hoppers at a realignment press conference how the schools decision to join a conference headquartered 2,032 miles away aligns with the Universities carbon footprint initiatives and watch them offer an explanation with a straight face. It's so dishonest it's disgusting. I get it, squeezing every drop they can from the golden goose, but if you squeeze too hard, you can kill the source that lays the egg.

The obvious answer is non-football to go into separate, regional conferences while football stays nationwide. Makes the most monetary sense, logistical sense, etc.

Not sure how we get there from here though.

amen brother…couldn’t agree more and likewise share the sentiments of @MoverofFridge2.

If @OptionJacket likes national conferences with professionalized athletes having little to no academic requirements playing for the highest dollar, that’s fine. Just don’t be so naive to think the corruption in cfb is less now than then. While paying Cam $200k to go to Auburn is unethical, it pales in comparison to the millions Texas A&M paid last year in NIL dollars for an entire recruiting class that have not played one down for the aggies.

The difference is now it's not really corruption. But it's worse from a fan perspective, because at least back when it was against the rules schools had to be a little careful, sometimes got caught, and could never bring their full resources to bear.

Can we just start a single thread for all of these type posts? Or maybe a separate forum for everyone that will no longer be a fan after this year.

You guys are leaving out the obvious - NOW every team can buy players. Back then players were bought under the table without punishment from the NCAA because it was a corrupt system and the Auburns and UGA’s knew they were protected while GT couldn’t buy players without getting hammered because we weren’t protected. Today everyone is on the same level playing field. Just because some schools choose to not buy players doesn’t mean others can’t. I’ll take fairness any day than watching us lose to teams who were being protected by the NCAA.

If you really feel everyone is in the same playing field, then there is nothing left to say. You’re entitled to your opinion however naive it may be.

You guys take my comments wrong. I’m not a fan of what has happened but I also knew it was inevitable once they created the BCS and the bowls lost their power. Yes, I hate corruption which is why I have always hated the “pay to play” bowl system. And yes, I hate the NCAA for selective enforcement. If I were a factory fan then of course I would have loved pay to play and selective enforcement.

As a fan we are very close to what I have always wanted which is a system where every team can buy players without punishment since it has always been happening AND a playoff system where all teams have HOPE past September and one where one bad game or fluke turnover doesn’t cost you a chance.

Just because we are fans of a cheap school who doesn’t want to pony up doesn’t mean the system isn’t fair. GT could buy every 5 star in the class of 2025 if they wanted. They choose not too.

you’re making my point…and even if there is a semblance of truth to what you say regarding GT buying 5 stars, is that scenario something you want to be a part of? It’s fine if you do, but don’t be surprised when cfb starts hemorrhaging it’s long term fan base, including me.

I do agree GT is cheap and our admin has historically been dismissive towards our athletic program…but that’s a different discussion.

Who is the "they" in this case? The school funneling money over to the AA? The fans?

Truly, it is now possible for every school to buy players. Tech has plenty of well heeled alums to do so if it meant that much to them. Most wealthy Tech alums are more concerned with expanding their corporations, and growing their incomes, and in reality it is hard to blame them. The Dodd era guys are dying off, and the new guard isn’t just that interested.
As much as I have always liked college sports, I do find it comical that sidewalk fans of Bama and UGA will throw what they have to those programs and actually walk around with their chests puffed out like they are more important people.

It's also a numbers game. How much would each of us here have to give to equal all the Bama sidewalk fans giving $100?

Sure, but that was called cheating. It’s now legal. That’s a quantum leap. Programs used to be penalized for it, now they’re applauded. To each his own, and I personally don’t like the “progress” we’ve made.
