I'll give Thacker/Collins a couple of years to recruit DL before I make decision on him. As much as I will defend the players (including those recruited by CPJ), it is obvious we are thin at DL and Big Bee passing away made that even worse. People whine about our OL talent/size; but the real problem is DL IMO.

No you're right. I remembered Temple being bad but it was Matt Rhule who really did the turn around, not Collins. By the way, Rhule when 1-11 his first year at Baylor so rebuilds are not easy even if the coach is a miracle worker. Collins record at Temple is good, regardless of 10-win prior seasons. It's hard to win at Temple. By the way, you could also argue Jimbo Fisher took a 14 and 13 win team at FSU and turned it into a 7-6 team. You have to look at a coach's body of work and I think Collins record as a HC and DC is solid.

I enjoyed aspects of the CPJ era, and look forward to enjoying aspects of the CGC era, God willing ...
 
Gotta give it a couple years. The games this season are virtually meaningless as I do not think we will be close to getting 6 Ws which is the only meaningful threshold that's realistically within our reach. Even the recruits seem to understand this. Just relax

If you're Baylor, you're fine with Rhule posting up one win in his first season, because A) Baylor was a complete dumpster fire and anyone who thinks our program is in the same zipcode as that circus is an idiot and B) Rhule has a history of rebuilding programs. And you could say that Jimbo turned 14 win FSU teams into 7 win teams, but you'd be a damned moron who doesn't know anything about what they're talking about.

Collins' history so far is taking a 7-7 team and delivering the single most embarrassing loss at Bobby Dodd.
 
The thing that worries me the most, is not the loss to Citadel. Bigger names than us have had wtf losses. What worries me is that this transition of culture or whatever it is Geoff Collins says it is, was not for the better in display on Saturday. The taunting, unsportsmanlike conducts, when you’re down to a team who on paper is far worse than you, looks like we replaced our team with a shittier version of Mark Richt’s uga. It shows a complete lack of discipline, and it’s absolutely not a product of transition from the triple option. You guys know this too, so “the biggest transition in the history of college football” or whatever is an excuse.

Young men need discipline and leadership. You may want to be a fun coach to get players, but to a group of 18-22 year olds, if you’re just a fun guy who acts like 20 year old and dresses like one, they may like you, but they don’t really respect you. And that lack of respect was on display on Saturday.

Of everything that went wrong Saturday, and plenty did, the most concerning to me was the personal foul penalties that negated third down stops, which IMO as much as anything cost us this game.

I can handle talent deficiencies, roster balancing, even dumb coaching mistakes (as long as they are corrected), but watching a GT team display such a lack of discipline is what pissed me off about this game. I haven’t seen a Tech team that undisciplined (with a good portion of it taking place on one drive) since 1994 and the end of the B*** L**** era.

We need to see if this was a one game aberration. Based on Collins' comments after the game, I do not expect it will occur again.

Yeah I’m just voicing my observations from what I watched. If this is handled then even when we lose more games at least we’ll know we’re in the right direction.

This is fair and I have to believe there is gonna be a reckoning this week. CGC is a fun guy, but he also worked for George O'Leary, and Nick Saban so he may need to bring a little bit of that energy. I dont think we need to cut out the djs or the fun gimmicks as they are a big part of our attraction to recruits, but I think it will be a character building couple of weeks. Very curious to see how we respond.

Continuing this weird argument, Paul Johnson took an 11-2 team and turned it into a 3-9 team the next year. It seems like what we are saying here is comparing year to year W-L record is not a fool proof way to judge a coach. So losing to Citadel, while unconscionably bad, does not take us off our bigger picture of rebuilding. This was a lost year anyway so we should all just not even judge what we see. I'm personally okay with shitty results this year if we can see positive movement strategically. It's not just recruiting, either. Things like relationships with boosters and alumni, athletic budget and facilities are all part of the plan. These things I dont have inside info on so all I can do is conjecture that it seems like we are on a positive slope there so the long view is positive.
 
I said it when he was hired: 6 wins this year would be an incredible coaching job. I was expecting 3 or 4 wins.

I said from the beginning, I wasn't going to judge anything on the field until the 3rd season. That is when I'll be critical, not before.

His positive nature actually got me excited. A lot of coaches would have poor mouthed the roster and let it be known that it was going to be a huge transition over many years. Collins doesn't like to put a schedule out there for that kind of stuff. He wants the players working hard everyday and not thinking they can wait to get better.

So I sort of talked myself into 6 wins were reasonable then I did an evaluation of the roster. Everyone knows our recruiting: it has varied from 44-60 over the previous 4 years with an average of 50. Maybe I shouldn't include the 60 and that would move the average to a 48.

The thing is if you look at the classes the top 4-5 recruits were on defense. The exception is James Graham but he wasn't given his 4 star rating for QB. I didn't run any numbers but it is very likely that we have been recruiting around 40 on defense but around 55-60 on offense.

I compared our current roster to the 2008 roster on offense. Not only did that roster have a couple of 4 star OLs, high 4 star in Dwyer, 4-star in Nesbitt, they had a lot of 3 stars that were in the top 500/600 players (the top half of 3-stars) while the current roster is mostly guys below that level and quite a few not even in the top 1000.

Lucas Johnson's best offer other than Tech was San Diego State. Our OL for the most part don't have the body type needed and at least some of them were recruited specifically because they fit an option blocking scheme. Minihan already figured he was only going to be a bench player for Johnson, then stepped in as our 2nd best OL at the start of the season. That should tell you that something is different at OL.

Oliver is our best offensive player but he didn't have any offers to play QB of note. We have some good RBs and WRs but it is telling that Oliver seems to be a better athlete than any of them and would likely be our best RB or WR if he focused on those positions.

Paul Johnson almost got fired for that 3-9 season and had only his past success to keep it from happening. (and probably should have been anyways)

Please elaborate on the extensive accomplishments of Geoff Collins. I'll patiently wait.
