Tennessee taking NIL to the next level

I'm trying to find the silver lining in this, so here goes:

If any states pass laws giving them a recruiting advantage, you can bet the Ga Legislature will pass whatever it takes to let UGA complete.

We will get the same NIL laws as UGA. now it is on us fans and boosters to raise the cash to compete. we can buy players legally. Time to put up or shutup.
Uh have you seen the typical GT alumnus? They could give two sheets about GT football or sports in general, other than soccer for some odd reason.

Pretty depressing but as I've said before, send off Bama, Texas, UGA, Ohio State, Oregon...I'd love nothing more than to participate in a souped up Div 1 Ivy League including Stanford, UCLA, Duke, UNC, Miami, maybe ND, maybe PSU, maybe Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Kansas...etc. "Bring College back to College!"

Yet they have not stepped up to fund soccer teams. I also wonder why we do not have a women's golf team.

Good gracious. Some of you are just so way over the top with your woe is me. Stay home then if you are so upset that a player who signed with GT doesn’t stay for a full 4 years. I guess you are the same folks who didn’t cheer for Kenny Anderson, Dennis Scott, or Marbury - all of whom chased the money.

Listen, GT will field a team of players this fall who have chosen to play for GT this year. Their reasons are as varied as every other student on campus. If y’all are so butthurt that it’s not the exact same players from last year then go on and drop the sport you’ve loved for decades. Players are interchangeable products who use the schools and system as much as the schools use them to make money. I made peace with that decades ago when it was obvious a large portion of college football and basketball players should never have been allowed to step on campus with their academic records. But since everyone, including many of you, said it’s okay that this class of people are allowed into GT, I had no problem cheering for football and hoops players who could barely make the NCAA minimum test scores yet were admitted to GT while kids with 1400’s were denied. Now many of you are upset that these same players up and leave. When you allow rats into a fine ship you should expect to clean up poo.

I’ll be pulling for the GT uniforms this year just like I’ve rooted for GT uniforms in the past. Whether it’s a kid named Dwyer, Gibbs, or Smith makes no matter. They’ll either win or lose just like every other season.

Problem is the lower tier of P5 schools aren't going to willingly exit for what would undoubtedly be far less money, and the factories aren't going to exit as long as they're benefitting under the current system.

Apples and oranges. Those examples are one here or there going pro. We're now talking about yearly seasonal wholesale changeover in the double digits leaving our program or others to go to another school. Just how I view the situation now.

I know what the topic is. But the bottom line is folks are butt hurt that a player decides not to play for GT anymore and they make grand statements like they are going to give up watching (which we all know they won’t because any fan posting on a football message board in April for a team in the bottom 25% of the sport are addicted and won’t just quit). I, for one, don’t care about the why they leave GT. I don’t care if they drop out of school to go sit in the basement or get a job, or if they go pro, or if they go to another school. None of that matters regarding the 2022 GT football team. Under NIL and portal the good teams will lose players due to lack of playing time and bad teams will lose players because the coach sucks. Either way it doesn’t matter because we’ll have 85 no matter what. It’s really not that big an issue. The one area where coaching will change is they now have to recruit their own players. But, come on, if you are around a kid every day and he chooses to leave then that’s on you.

NCAA is in full pouting mode. They hate losing their enforcement power over payments - where they looked the other way when their favored big boys got around the rules and slapped it to the Ole Misses and Georgia Techs and SMUs and Auburns of the world when they dared to compete. Beat UGA in Athens and the next year Thomas is investigated for a measly amount of gear during Hate Week. Ole Miss learned, do not ever beat Alabama two times in a row.

They could be working to make NIL somewhat fair, but they prefer this pout. They are spending time suspending athletes on drug violations from over the counter stuff. Abolish the NCAA and start over.

That's all nice. Enjoy going to the games with 20,000 other people too tough to say "Woe is me."

Personal note: I have been out of state for almost the whole time since I got out so there's nothing for me to quit one way or the other.

and I did root for the BB players you mentioned but over the next 20 years lost all interest

This is funny. You are posting on a message board in April about a team who is a patsy. You aren’t quitting. You’ll still flip to the games and check scores since your out of state. And when our next coach gets us to a bowl game you’ll think about going to see friends. NIL is just a blip on the radar of all the silliness that college football has seen in the past 70 years. And I have enjoyed going to the games with crappy turnout until last year. But it had nothing to do with this topic. It had to do with a coach who can’t game plan and spends more time spotting the ball than thinking of the next scenario. But that is easily fixed as we’ll see soon.

Exactly. The NCAA needs to be abolished as they are the most corrupt organization in the country.

Why would the State of Tennessee legislature spend their time trying to pass legislation like this?
As a Tennessee resident and native Georgian who cheers for two teams, I can see the value here. By allowing the schools to coordinate on NIL deals it does take some of the "wild west" approach out so that the schools know who they are getting in bed with AND the players are less likely to be abused by knowing their NIL funding is from a correlated 3rd party. No I am not a huge fan of paying players like this but we have no one to blame but ourselves. When Bobby Ross won the national championship in 1990 he was making about $100k a year. Not bad in 1990 but nowhere close to what a pro coach was making. But we let media money into college and that allowed bama to pay what was considered an absurd $4mil per year in 2007. But you see what they built and now everyone is chasing those coaches with money. It got to the point where coaching staffs are in the $10mil+ range and the players on the field are paid a combined $0 for putting their future health on the line for our entertainment? It was a house of cards that had to fall. States should be trying to regulate this with the interest of protecting the schools and athletes and allowingthem all to maximize their revenue. This bill is a good start, and yes Georgia will pass something similar which will benefit GT if they can find a way to restore success to the flagship football program.

It won’t help them. They are not among the anointed gods that are allowed to cheat by the NCAA. The NCAA will crack down on anything illegal Tennessee does if it threatens UGA or Bama.

I could be missing your point, but in my mind there’s a big difference in a player leaving early for the Pros and a player leaving to go play immediately for another college team. You might not see it now, but we are going to continue to lose our best players to the Bamas of the world. It is like we are now a farm team for the big boys. Sure, most of our players who left went to lower level schools, but you really only have to lose one or two of your best players a year to really damage the team.

Totally disagree. We have lost exactly 1 player of consequence. And we won 3 games without him and 3 games with him. He’ll benefit Bama way more than he benefitted GT. And why does it matter where the player goes if he leaves? Whether it’s the NFL, a job, or another college team it doesn’t matter to GT. For GT he is simply not here regardless of what he is doing. You are mad because they are going to other college teams. So what. We are also getting players from other college teams.

And if you want to parse the details I would say GT is clearly getting better players from the portal than what we are losing as a whole. Remember everyone freaking out about losing the WR Brown going to the mighty SEC. We didn’t miss a beat at that position and he is an afterthought on USC. And to your point about losing our best players every year, come on. Charlie Thomas is by far our best defensive player. He’s still here. Gibbs was a unique situation and he made the right call under this dumpster fire we have. As for losing one or two players would really damage the team, I don’t agree. I think you and others are creating an issue in your mind that doesn’t really exist. Gibbs is one player. Remember when Choice transferred here from OU. Was that a death knell? No. It was a unique situation and the player made a decision. Heck, UGA just won the Natty and they’ve had as many transfers out as we have. I just wish we could portal coaches!

Lost one player so far you mean.

I hope you are right. I am skeptical at this point, but it is too early to know how it will play out.

Already have my season tix bought, but I think if I didn't already have them I probably wouldn't buy. I have no idea anymore, outside of a few positions, who is even on our team. Eventually, I'm not going to care who is on our team.
You're just biding your time till the Low Country Boil at my tailgate.
