The entire sporting world

We made the same mistake the week before against NC State but we got away with it. Georgia is a better football team than NC State. We didn’t get away with it.
We actually ALSO did this in the Miami game and got really lucky. On the last drive we only rushed 3… fortunately their QB danced around way too long and we were able to get a lucky fumble.

We also had a full complement of DB’s.

And I’m telling you earlier in the season it was very subjective and refs were simply calling it for the defensive line all moving this season. They were interpreting abrupt movements that caused a false start as a delay of game penalty in more than a few games. Now whether that was an incorrect interpretation and that’s why it stopped maybe is true. But I know it was called for little more than an entire line shifting in unison or stemming if you prefer. I know the rule. I also know they wanted it called more, and it was being called more and coaches weren’t too happy.
Yes they called it earlier in the season and they called it because the LB was making a loud call or clapping to tell the DL when to do it. Now they do it with a much more subtle call or just on timing is why it is not called as much. They had to adapt. It was never called for the guys moving. Every time it was a penalty was because there was an audible call made for them to stem.

For the people saying “let it go” or whatever…

I’m still pissed about the call in 2014 where the refs gave Georgia a 99 yard TD when the play was clearly dead.

That was a game that should have never made it to OT either, but thankfully we won it.
Yep always thought how awful it had been if we'd lost because of that. Now we know!

Well, maybe not everyone wants to end up posting like you on gameday, so they choose a different path?
I don’t understand what that means.

Was watching the game. Not posting on here during it.

Not true in all cases but sure true in a lot of them. They also got people for “unnatural movement” along the line.

7-1-5-a-4
Player(s) aligned in a stationary position within one yard of the line of scrimmage may not make quick or abrupt actions that are not part of normal defensive player movement in an obvious attempt to cause an offensive player(s) to foul (false start). An official shall sound his whistle immediately [S7 and S21].
Czar is correct. The problem is intent, which is also where the new targeting rules come from. Coaches are using the rules to try to cause a false start and then throwing their hands up to say “that wasn’t our intent”. Same where they used to coach players to target other players to force a fumble or a drop and would never own up to it. Start ejecting the coaches, school fines them part of their salary and it will end.

You will never be able to police these as they are written. Liars will just lie and cheaters will just cheat.

Could ban sudden shifts of 3 or more guys on the line of scrimmage simultaneously. Part of the reason people do that is to draw false starts I'm sure.

It's stupid that the O-line has to play a game of Buckingham Palace King's Guard where they're all not allowed to move no matter what craziness goes on in front of them. That's not football

You can't shift 4 guys on offense at once to try to draw defenders offsides so it's asymmetrical too

I was there in 97 when they called PI on us to allow the dwags to complete a drive for the go-ahead score at the end of the game.

I have seen so many of these COFH games come down to one g d officiating call and its utterly nauseating.

If that's what it was all about then the most amazing thing is how badly every single announcer understood it.

I don't think the intention of the rule was to ban the line shifting in unison -- that's a pretty common tactic that has a legitimate defensive benefit beyond a potential false start. Therefore, it is both "normal defensive movement" (so not a penalty per the rule) and not necessarily "an obvious attempt to cause an offensive player(s) to foul (false start)" (required for it to be a penalty, per the rule).

If they wanted to ban the defensive line shifting, they could have easily done that, as @justafan suggested. There's all sorts of player movement clearly banned for the offense, including involving shifts, and it would have been simple to extend that clear language to the defense. The fact that they didn't shows that's not what they were trying to prevent, in my opinion.

That said, there is subjectivity in the rule and it's possible that just doing the shift without some sort of verbal signal or clapping was called at some point during the season. It certainly wouldn't be the only bad call or even misinterpreted rule we've seen in CFB.

Problem here is it is never flagged/whistled until the OL jumps as a reaction. Like someone else said, stemming has always been a part of DL play and is considered "normal movement." The intent was never to cause an offsides. It was to give a certain look, make the OL determine assignments, then shift into different gaps just before the snap to confuse them in to making wrong blocks. Coaches may be using it now to draw offenses offsides is why they have added a rule about the disconcerting signals causing a false start by the offense.

If that is the case then I concede that you are correct about them calling it that this year, but I have never seen it. I have seen announcers wrongfully identify it when you can clearly hear the refs announce "delay of game, disconcerting signals by the defense."

Oh yeah forgot about that one.

Definitely reminiscent of '06 when refs were pulling guys off the pile and the ball popped out. uGA player picks it up and starts running with it to score a TD, and refs were like, "yeah this is legit."

Nope.
Not the referee’s fault Georgia Tech did not score more points in the first half with 300 yards of offense. The referees didn’t let UGA drive down the field in 80 seconds and score a TD in the 4th quarter. The referees did not fumble the ball and let UGA score another TD in the 4th quarter.

I love Georgia Tech. I really wish they had won. But I’m not that fan.
All these things are true. And situations that only existed as a result of the officiating. True, we did not execute in these situations, but these shouldn’t have existed. Hopefully you’re getting tons and tons of fist bumps from your uga pals for being This fan.

Knows GT won that game. The only people in denial are uga fans who benefited from the steal.

The whole world knows. That’s why the whole world is declaring it.
If we won, why is it making me feel so lousy? They got the most points, so they won. But, our coaches and team played their hearts out, and I'm sure proud of them. Regardless of the horrible calls at crucial times, we still had plenty of chances to win the game both in regulation and in 8 overtimes. It's on us. The bad news is we lost. The good news is we
are not a joke anymore. If we persevere and keep improving as fans, administrators, coaches and players, we could beat Georgia next year. If we do, it won't feel anything like this. Go Jackets!

I was also. In a meeting the following Monday, a co worker threw a flag at me and yelled "THERE'S THE FLAG!".

Luckily for him, I didn't punch him.
