The entire sporting world

The refs in general are what I like least about any level of football, it is by far the most frustrating thing. While it's not an easy task, there's no way you can convince me that officiating is anywhere near as good as it could be, it's pathetically bad and the whole system needs to be reinvented. There's no excuse at all for the crap that happens over and over and it constantly amazes me how the level of incompetence is just accepted (not to mention things more nefarious but even without that is it putrid).
I'd go as far as to say that officiating is getting worse and not better despite the addition of technology.

People don’t put up with as much abuse as they used to. I don’t know what kind of youth interest there is in officiating. Add to this the general death of community sports leagues, and there is probably a small talent pool/interest and no opportunity to grow without being in a high dollar club level league. That’s my theory. There’s no forgiving leagues for bad officiating.

I think it's possible officiating is better now, but technology has made it much easier to see when it's wrong.

It's not even just that it's hd; it's that it's hd, a dozen different angles, slow mo, and the production crews tend to be so good that you see all the right things almost immediately.

Hell, a lot of times we even get to see it better than the replay booth.

Very good points. It is easier to criticize the officiating (And feel totally justified for doing so) for sure.

There may be some weird interactions where the field refs let some stuff go thinking that the replay will fix it, and the replay won’t fix it because they don’t want to contradict the call on the field. The wild variations in the quality of coverage available for replays from game to game is also kind of an issue. And somehow they sure as hell don’t know what targeting is, based on any number of coin flip targeting calls I’ve seen this year.

Yeah, I think once they perfect a sky judge system things will be better. Somehow they need to use it as an additional referee, not just a challenge/review system. But unfortunately right now I'm not sure that's close.

The end result is all that matters, whether it's guys on the field, cameras, robots, whatever. The fact we at home can see the right things immediately and they still get it wrong means the end result is unmitigated dog squeeze and there is simply no excuse. For whatever reason they don't care enough to make a meaningful improvement. They can most certainly do better but they choose not to, that's the bottom line.

I guess you have to consider not screwing up the flow of the game. But hell, the current system already screws up the flow of the game with too many/too stupid reviews of no consequence (but oddly quiet sometimes when the game is on the line…), players flopping to try to game the review system, etc.

I dunno I feel like if we get the calls right, we avoid the 8 OTs and the flow of the game is improved. Just my opinion

Remember when you'd have two or three chain measurements on the field to determine first downs each half? I swear that was par for the course back in the early 2000's. We couldn't have had any more than two as a team this whole season, it seems like. The refs now just seem to decide the ball is somewhere close to the 10 yard mark and just wave the chains down the field. This encapsulates my observation that refs are less concerned with calling games by the letter of the rulebook. Seems more like basketball reffing nowadays.

I think reviews have improved calls but at the same time, rules have been added for player safety that require a lot of judgment calls by the refs. Targeting, hands to the face, new blocking rules, etc. All that stuff is a distraction from the other, ordinary football business like watching for holding or spotting the ball accurately.

Just my perception, but it seems like the coaches are in the referees ears a lot more than they used to be. It seemed like Kirby Smart was talking to an official every time the camera panned to him during the Georgia Tech game. The officials need to put a stop to that.

I had the oppty to be an official several yrs ago but the pressure, hassle factor in general and actual violent threats turned me off..Just not worth it.
