The Hunt

Before I list the 3, I’d also like to point out that there are 2 other programs open right now (Nebraska, ASU) and 2 more likely to come open soon (Auburn, Colorado). GT probably will be 4th in the pecking order, but really only Auburn would be in the same coaching search. Hopefully there won’t be many other big P5 job openings by December.

Dream hire: Deion (For recruiting and the ability to bring in a lot of big names on his staff)
Budget hire: Key (Frees up $$$ to hire a very good staff)
Right hire: Tyson Helton (Solid offensive coach with a lot of experience)

If we get declined by Art Briles, I’d take CDS in a second. Puts us in the map instantly. Will bring the best transfer portal class in history.

Declined by Briles? He's too radioactive to even work as an OC at an FCS school right now... and that's not a hypothetical scenario. There literally was too much backlash for him to coach at Grambling.

He's probably never coaching major football ever again.

Dream: Dan mullen
Budget: Jeff monken
Middle: Todd monken, chadwell

My logic is that we obviously offer Briles. He was completely vindicated both in court and in the Dallas news. So if he doesn’t come, that’s on him.

He is currently coaching a team that won their bowl game. More than can be said about Tech.

Maybe so, but it ain't happening. There won't be an offer.

All of the usual suspects are going to come up here so I am going to throw in a dark horse

Clay Helton is in in our backyard right now serving his coaching penance. USC canned him because he couldn’t get them a natty, but he did get them a .67 winning percentage.

Wait, you think a 67% winning percentage at USC is good?

I don’t understand how y’all are saying Art. The dude has been coaching ITALIAN FOOTBALL for the last 7 years, with one high school stint in between. He’s got too much baggage to bring here, and if we’re gonna get him, he either HAS to succeed, or we just look like dirtier scumbags than UGAg

Dream hire: Deion Sanders
Budget hire: Warren Ruggiero
Right hire: Dan Mullen

I wouldn't be mad with someone like Bill O'Brien or Clay Helton, either, though I think they'd probably top out somewhere near the Gailey equilibrium. Wouldn't be the worst thing in the world after the past few years.

Bob Stoops Tech could consider. He is a proven head coach (winning a National Title at Oklahoma). His coaching mentor was Steve Spurrier. Stoops was the Defensive Coordinator under Spurrier when they won the National Title in '96. Bob Stoops is currently coaching the Dallas Renegades. He would bring discipline back to our program, as well. I'm not sure he is interested in getting back into college, but we could at least consider him.

Tech needs a proven head coach that has had success at the highest level in college. We can't afford to take another risk with an unproven coach that hasn't had success against a Power 5 schedule week in and week out.

GO JACKETS!
I would love stoops, but he is not coming here

The more I read about Curt Cignetti- the more he could be all 3 for me:
* NCSU: coached Rivers and recruited Russell Wilson
* Alabama: recruited Mark Ingram and Dont'a Hightower
* IUP was 4-10 before his arrival...where he went 53-17
* Elon was 4-20 before him...he went 14-9 as CAA coach of the year and Eddie Robinson Nat'l COY
*JMU he's 36-5

Agreed. I don't know how culpable he was in what went on, but the perception is out there and it's just nonsensical to think that FCS schools see him as too much of a problem to even be an assistant but a high-caliber academic school like Tech is going to hire him as head coach.

Dream: Deion Sanders or Urban Meyer
Budget: Curt Cignetti
Right: Curt Cignetti

Proven track record of establishing winning football programs and/or sustaining high level performance. Has known good coaching his whole life. Has recruited the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic with instant credibility in the Ohio/PA area due to his family. Not someone who’s chasing the fame and glory of College coaching in the SEC. He’s 61 so he Could stay here a while to finish out his career while laying a great foundation for us.

Whoever takes over will likely deal with a a player revolt for a few years.

Definitely a good resume.

Definitely a good resume.

Someone like that is probably more likely than most of the names being thrown around. Not a household name but a really strong resume, and not likely to be at the top of the pecking order for powerhouse programs.
