Tom Herman's next job?

if you'll remember, charlie strong sat out there as the media's "it guy" for HC, as a DC, for a very long time before someone took a shot with him. that never made sense to me, but maybe now we know why. as a parallel, Mr. Smart languished out there pretty long as a DC, without moving to the HC ranks. Twin sons of different mothers?

We've always known why. He was a black guy married to a white girl. Not too many old land grant southern schools falling over themselves to hire him.
 
Could it be that Charlie Strong is just not doing a good job and earning his salary? Probably not. I think Tom Herman will end up at Notre Dame. Kelly will try the pro route being told by ND he best find a new home. Texas will keep Charlie for another year because it's the PC thing to do and Austin is all about PC. Les Miles may go back to Okie State once Gundy moves on. He might land at Houston to replace Herman. If CPJ gets canned look for Stansbury to go after Mike McIntyre (sp) out at Colorado or give the job to Ted Roof. LSU may not want Jimbo if things continue to spriral down at FSU. If he rights the ship look for him to look for a new spot. Just my current thinking.

There are too many influencers in the Texas job. You gotta be a natural networker to be head coach there because half your time will be spent not coaching, but existing in the power vacuum that is their athletic department. Unless they can get it straightened out from the top, Texas will continue to mire in mediocrity. Through rejecting the deal, Saban made it clear that the mess that is environment at Texas is not worth even $100 million.

as much as people think ted roof would be a bad hire im not so sure.. hire himself a good OC and DC and we could spend more money on them and roof is probably cheaper than a lot of high profile coaches right now

Light me on fire, inject me with AIDS, kill my wife and daughter in front of me, and then gut me like a fish until I scream for mercy, if Roof ever finds his way as Tech's HC.

I think it boils down to 2 things:

1) How much does he like Houston? Does the idea of spending the majority of his career there sound appealing?

2) How much does he want to win a national championship? Is the opportunity worth losing your job security and risking failure?

I would probably stay at Houston if I liked it there.

Seems like Strong is just a bad fit at Texas. Their admin and boosters are a mess not sure who would want to step into that fire pit. With the potential for Southern Cal, Norte Dame, and LSU already open we could see some dominos fall with coaches changing jobs. Looks like LSU is clearly targeting Herman and Jimbo. Wonder if Dabo would be offered by any of those? You never hear his name come up for better jobs despite his success at Clemson.
 
Spent a lot of time in Austin in 2000. They were ready to run Mack Brown out of town on a rail. I was amazed they kept him around till he finally delivered for them. They seemed as impatient a fanbase as anywhere. including Bama.

If he gets fired, he can retire or get another gig, but he will be set for life.

Speaks volumes that Saban who is a serial job hopper wouldn't take their offer.

They really care about getting a campus in Houston. Wife went to UT and we live in Houston, it's a big deal.

Clemson is a top five job now. Only place Dabo should leave for is Bama.

Even then, I don't think it's worth the risk unless he really, really loves Alabama. He makes a lot at Clemson and will only get paid more if he continues to win, and he's about to reach all-time legend status there. At Bama the most he could really strive for is 3rd best coach, and that's only if he won multiple national championships. He's built up a lot of goodwill at Clemson but would start from scratch with a short leash at Bama.

Overall, not worth it at all unless he really loves Bama that much.
