Tom Herman's next job?

Even then, I don't think it's worth the risk unless he really, really loves Alabama. He makes a lot at Clemson and will only get paid more if he continues to win, and he's about to reach all-time legend status there. At Bama the most he could really strive for is 3rd best coach, and that's only if he won multiple national championships. He's built up a lot of goodwill at Clemson but would start from scratch with a short leash at Bama.

Overall, not worth it at all unless he really loves Bama that much.

He has loved Bama ever since he was a little boy. Bama is also the reason he doesn't still share a room with his mother.

I don't think Clemson is even a top 15 job much less top 5. Wonder if he would leave for LSU, Texas, ND, or Southen Cal?

USC is one of the other top 5. Not a chance in hell he would ever leave for the other ones.

Dabo would not fair well in La La Land. He would have to convert to atheism and begin committing every sin known to man just to hope to fit in.

Go Jackets!

I agree Clem isn't a top 5 job. However, he's beloved there, is well-paid and has enough leash to stay that way for a loooong time. I doubt he leaves for anywhere but Bama ... well, maybe TX too.

Speaking of TX, I wish Strong had never taken that job. He's a better coach than he'll be allowed to show there. I had to redact the rest of my comments so I don't get in trouble.

"Top 5 job". Top 5 in what? That's like being a "Top 5 school". Is assistant coach satisfaction a ranking factor?

There are plenty of jobs out there better than Clemson, but I'm not sure there's a better fit for Dabo than Clemson. I really have a hard time seeing him mesh with any of the other schools being thrown out.

As for Herman, unless Houston gets invited to the Big 12 asap, I'd be shocked if he's not gone within the next couple of years. Most big time coaches don't aspire to simply be revered by their fan base. They want to play for national championships. I doubt very seriously Herman sees an American Conference Championship as the pinnacle of his career. Texas would seem to be the obvious fit, assuming Strong continues to struggle.

Can the B12 continue to exist without expansion?

Yes. The big12 is Oklahoma and Texas. As long as those 2 remain in the big 12 the big 12 remains. Both have no reason to leave because they run the conference. This has been true for over 10 years.

As I see it, the Power 5 jobs that will probably be open at season's end will include:

LSU
USCw
Vandy
Kentucky
Boston College
Texas
Auburn
Baylor
Oregon

Of those, I could see Herman ending up at Texas, USC, or LSU. I don't think Houston has the cash to be able to compete with those programs. Although Oregon would be an interesting option with the Nike funds behind the program and with his offense a natural fit there.

If Houston beats Louisville, they'll play for a National Championship this season.

Texas, LSU, USC (West), in that order, with Texas as the favorite....

I don't know about "TOP 5" or whatever but Clemson is a great job. I see it as a destination job. It has everything a coach would want:

1) tons of fan support = $$$
2) can recruit any athlete under the sun
3) main rival is historically bad
4) ACC, until recently, was not as competitive as the SEC o Big Ten
5) fertile recruiting base

I can't think of a single thing that Texas could use to lure Dabo away from Clemson, besides the prestige that goes with being "Head Coach of the Texas Longhorns".

I can think of millions. Clemson isn't even in the same game as Texas when it comes to money.

I guess if you think Texas would offer him 10MM or whatever but I doubt it. He makes $5MM right now at clemson. They can match any reasonable offer from Texas.

Saban likes Lake Rabun, I think.
He's also older and just didn't relish the challenge of a new position. He's done job hopping at this point in his life. He's built a sustainable monster at this point.

I could see Texas giving him and the entire staff a bump. Plus doubling the recruiting staff. Plus giving him all the facilities he could want.

Dabo can't compete with Alabama year in and out at Clemson. He can out compete them at Texas.

Assistant Coach total salaries
Clemson - $4.3MM
Texas - $3.9MM

Clemson does not want for anything. They are building a $55MM facility exclusively for their football players-- mini golf, barber shop, movie theater, laser tag.

This is the öööö CPJ is talking about.

But Texas could pay the assistants more. And they could pay off $55 million renovation in a single year (and still be one if the most profitable programs in the country.
