Tech pic1.jpg

Who can name the opponent Tech was playing and what year this photograph would have been taken?

Kinda looks like Pitt to me.

GT put turf in in 1971. Could be Army. We played them a few times in the early 70s.

#49 in 1971 is Greg Horne. Opponent is likely Army(a loss 13-16)or Navy (a win 34-21). Both at Grant Field.

Could be BC or Duke. Duke used the silver and blue Cowboys look back then.

After looking at a lot of photos of games that year, it appears that it is Duke in 1971. 49 is Greg Horne and 86. I thought Army or Navy, but their pages don't show any uniform/helmet combo like it in the photo. I didn't remember Duke having uniforms like that, but apparently so. It had to be 1971 or earlier, because Fulcher took over in '72, and he never wore gold jerseys, from what I have been told.

1971, Greg Horne & Duke are all correct.

Mike Oven is #86 having just put his guy on the ground & trying not a get an AstroTurf elbow burn.
Thanks. I started to include that in my post, and actually left #86 in the post, but I could never figure out who it was. Good job.

You're welcome. Pretty easy to do as a teammate of Greg & Mike's.

This 21-0 win - the 8th game of that season - evened our record at 4-4 as Carson desperately tried to recover from a 2-4 start & save his job. I was in permanent exile to the "RedDogs" (AKA Scout Team) after my USCe fiasco and subsequent case of the yips in the upset loss to Army in Game 3.

1971 was my freshman year. I’m pretty sure the pic is from the Army game. I’m told that loss sealed Bud Carson’s fate as HC.

I checked Army photos online, and they didn't have a uniform or helmet like what is shown in that photo
Army wore gold-white-gold (and blah black shoes & black shoelaces) in that game. Will dig out a photo from the AJC I kept & edit this later.

Check out this game video and you will see numerals on the Army helmets. There is no numeral on the opponent's helmet in the photo posted above.

If a thumbnail doesn't show, click on the file to open.

And that's Carson's son, Cliff, aged 11. If Carson stood up, he wasn't much taller than his son.

Beware snarky former players who are pack rats....... DS

Neither image shows the uniforms worn, so it really appears from the video highlights of the Army game, that it wasn't Army in that vintage photo. Whether is is Duke is still not known for sure, but it almost has to be them.

You are right about Carson's height relative to his son's. Wonder what ever happened to his son. Any idea?

Like I said in the edit, click on the attachment & it should open a JPG, either as a tab in your browser or in whatever you use for JPGs.

"Are those RATS sitting cross-legged on the field? Pretty cool seats (until a toss sweep gets strung out over there, I guess!) "

ANS: No, the only sideline that would ever have that many people on the field, especially a Duke Homecoming Game, would be on the West sideline.
