Welcome To Head Coaching, Brent Key

To Hell With Georgia. You earned it.

Yours truly, Tech Fans.
I rarely ever post on anything other than Tech football history (and I have to take a back seat to DeepSnap on that).
But I want to say that this is absolutely the right move by GT. People have their preferences, but consider this; Deion Sanders (a totally unproven wild card) was never coming to coach at Tech. Chadwell May be an up and comer, but it is easy to hype a guy who has won at the minor league level and has never even sniffed recruiting a 4 or 5 star guy. You have a guy who not only played at Tech, and understands the landscape, but coached and recruited at one of the highest level programs in the nation. People can question his OL, but that is like asking a mule to win the Kentucky Derby.
Let this guy put a plan in place, recruit, conjure up some NIL $, and let’s see what happens.

So, pretty much, “let’s throw this junk out there and see what happens.” We’ve done that several times in Tech history.

What do you think of his OC record at UCF in 2015? People can question his OL and his past OC record until he wins the annual 6-7 games a year at GT that so many were pissed before the circus game to town. Please do not get me wrong, I hope Brent Key leads us to an ACC title and gets us back in the OBs. But to say that this is absolutely the right move by GT, only time will tell. I would feel better had we not lost to UVA, or got beat badly by FSU & Miami. However I will concede that he is an upgrade over Clown Collins, but time will tell if we can get back to the annual 6 and 7 win season and a bowl game, but I do agree with you that we should let this guy put a plan in place, recruit, conjure up some NIL $, and let’s see what happens.

A Head Coach that knows what it is like to be a Player and a Student at GT. He has been here and can sell the program. Congrads to Head Coach Key and the Team. THWG and that old fart at UNC.

The right man for a tough job – Brent Key, Georgia Tech head coach

This feels like the right hire. It mightn’t feel that way five years from now, but we’re not living in 2027. We’re living at a time when Georgia Tech is trying to correct the biggest wrong in Institute annals. Brent Key feels like the right place to start. ExploreBrent Key to be Georgia Tech’s coach
He’s an alum. That’s major. He wants the job, which is, too. Geoff Collins drove the Yellow Jackets so far into the ditch that extricating them figured to take years if not decades. As interim coach, Key gave a mighty tug. He won four games in eight tries. Collins won 10 in 38. Collins is home counting his Waffle House coffee cups. Key gets to try and fix what the master marketer broke, which was an entire program.

Collins acted as if he’d inherited Tech at its all-time low. On that as on everything, he was wrong. Over Paul Johnson’s final three seasons, the Jackets were 21-16 overall, 13-11 in ACC play – not anywhere near great, but not awful. Johnson’s successor disavowed all he inherited, even the good parts. Of Collins’ 28 losses, nine were by 30-plus points. Over two games against Georgia, his Jackets were outscored 97-7.

ExploreGeoff Collins’ tenure over, Paul Johnson has his say
Key’s Jackets, not knowing who’d be coaching them beyond 3:30 p.m. Saturday, somehow gave No. 1 Georgia a semblance of a game. The halftime score was 10-7. It was 13-7 with six minutes left in the third quarter. Tech lost 37-14 – not a win, but not an embarrassment. It would have been fitting had Tech promoted to Johnson to non-interim coach in the locker room at Sanford Stadium, but it opted to look around. Three days later, it was done looking.

Willie Fritz is a good coach. His record tells us so. That didn’t make Fritz a Tech fit. He’s 62, the same age Johnson was when he retired. Fritz has been head coach at four schools, none in a Power 5 league. Key played in the ACC under George O’Leary. He worked in the SEC under Nick Saban. It’s possible he won’t get the job done – winning at Tech is hard – but at least he knows what winning at the highest level of college football entails.

Sometimes we ask: Does a coach make that much of a difference? Let’s recall how wretched Tech looked in its 42-0 loss to Ole Miss on Sept. 19. It was outgained 547 yards to 214. It had a punt blocked. (There’s our lasting image of the #404Takeover – 404 blocked punts.) Those Jackets didn’t just look like the worst team in the ACC; they appeared the worst team in the history of the world.

Two weeks later, under different management, they won at No. 24 Pitt. On Nov. 18, they spotted No. 13 North Carolina 17 points and won, holding one of the nation’s best offenses to zero second-half points. In Pittsburgh, they won behind No. 1 quarterback Jeff Sims. In Chapel Hill, they won with their Nos. 3 and 4 quarterbacks. By November, the new-coach bounce had worn off and Tech’s best player had a foot in the transfer portal. Didn’t matter. Key’s team kept trying.

Among the first things Key did after Collins’ sacking was to ditch the frivolity – the hashtags and the depth-chart-that-wasn’t-a-depth-chart. He said, “Let’s play football.” Who knew these Jackets could?

Esteemed AJC colleague Ken Sugiura reports that Tech and Fritz “evidently were unable to reach a deal.” Well, you know what they say – some of the best deals are those you’re unable to reach. Key took a team that looked destined to go 1-11 and nearly took it to a dadgum bowl. He gave the program hope in its darkest hour. He gives it hope for the years ahead.

It doesn’t matter if Key was the first choice. What matters is that he’s the right choice.
Best darn thing Bark Madley ever penned.

The school interviewed 10 to 12 candidates. Tech struggled to lure a big outside name because of the school's reluctance to guarantee large portions of the contract, with the amount of guaranteed money a nonstarter for some candidates. The school owes Collins more than $11 million, and financial concerns are significant.

(Why Fritz & Chadwell turned GT down)

5 years, no details yet.... Hopefully it is a reasonable buyout

Yes. I was hoping this to be the case regardless of who was hired. Let’s see how the staff shakes out and recruiting/portal activity.

Tough nuts. Pay players not buyouts

Regardless of who the coach is the only thing that matters is the final score of ball games. That’s it. One thing Collins taught us all, and it’s a lesson I’ll never forget, is that you can say all the right things and create positive emotions but in sports all that matter are the end results. So to Collins I tip my cap and say thank you for teaching us all that lesson. Key now has his chance to start next season 1-0. That’s all I will gauge him on. I wish him the best because I’d rather start out 1-0 than 0-1.

You know what pisses me off the most about this? My bitch ass dawg loving dad called me during the UGA game and told me Tech should hire Key because he is doing a good job and who else could Tech get anyway? Then the next 2 days all the BS happened and then we ended up with Key. There is just something about a dawg fan saying we should hire a coach like they are giving us his blessing that just irks me.

But other than that congrats Coach Key, you earned it!

Hopefully we start the season with a cupcake and not Clemson.

How hard is it to stop talking to your dad?
