When did PJ lose this team?

Last season was what a 3o team with a credible passing threat looked like. Most of our other teams had a mediocre passing theeat. This year we can't pass because we can't block. The OL blows pass blocking and it must be coaching. Never have I seen 4 DL go unblocked on a pass play where the qb is undercenter. Not at a college level, high school level, or middle school level. Shotguns teams may attempt that once or twice a season at most. It is insane how poorly we pass block.

We have improved our blocking on the dive. Against Pitt our wr and abacks were getting enough blocks for big plays. But when we pass it is a crap shoot where the dice are loaded towards 'sack' .

I don't get that. Block the guy in front of you. It's not that difficult if you start there. I get if a Blitzer gets through, but the entire d-line is simply wrong, give a back a chance to make a play or Thomas to beat one guy instead of four. I don't care if you are confused, at least stop what you can.

Yesterday either one or both Pitt LBs started towards the line on the blitz whenever the motion man started moving. They timed it just right most times and hit a gap untouched. I know the timing of the motion is important in this offense but we need some counterbalances that vary the snapcount and keep the defense honest.

JT doesn't have any pocket presence. He doesn't know to step up in the pocket on long plays when the rushers pinch in. Now true if someone has penetrated the middle then its hard to find a space but thats where he needs to be scrambling, through the LOS and not backwards at a 45 degree angle.

I am at a loss on the line technique.

The short dump off to the BB back works whenever we do it. We need to do it more. Marshall is the real deal and he needs lots more touches. Short passes, wheel routes, and BB options in addition to dives. Let that pony run!

Don't get on that plane, Dontae...

I don't know where to put this comment, but our pass protection sucks!!! It's basically JT running and dodging people

what pocket, I have not seen a pocket all year. Coach Johnson and the whole team are probably frustrated but he has not lost the team. With the exception of Clemson and probably Notre Dame we could have won the other games we played in. Mistakes killed us against Duke and really Defensive poor play

Pitt was pulled up so close to the LOS. We could have taken advantage of it if we could protect the QB and accurately throw the ball. We have no quick slants or anything to take advantage of an aggressive defense. Don't even know if we could accurately throw one if we did. The only passes we seem to like to take are low % passes and that quick throw out to the WR. We have nothing to the center of the field.

So, am I safe to assume that our OL has to "count" the defense and apply the same "man" blocking techniques as on our running plays? Is there any reason we can't "zone" block on passing plays and continue "man" blocking on running plays? I'm just spit-balling here...

Whatever will work. I'm just tired of watching two to three offensive linemen blocking the second level while the first level is in our backfield. Don't block a linebacker unless the defensive lineman is occupied.

that would take an awful lot of coaching by a sucky coach (sewak)...

I like the idea of letting Spurrier come in to help out as mentioned earlier in thread.

Maybe the Pittsburgh stench emanating from the sheer numbers close to the LOS is what disoriented our guys. :dunno:

Throwing slants into 9 men in the box doesn't make sense. When they crowd the LOS, we either need to beat them to the corner on tosses to get big plays, or throw over the top in man coverage, which requires pass blocking. We saw in the Clemson game what can happen if we actually block for even just a few seconds, but we have to be able to do that more consistently or teams will just accept that we will hit big plays maybe 1 of every 8 tries. Our defense allows big plays at a far higher rate than that, so that strategy doesn't work.

Isn't zone blocking actually EASIER to teach than man blocking?

Anyone looking for a question for the call-in show, I'd love to hear CPJ's take on the advantages and disadvantages of man blocking vs. zone blocking in pass protection.

You mean like the pass we threw over the middle? The one where our qb threw it too late which caused our other aback to start blocking too soon?

Part of the problem is JT5 is short and near the LOS. He has to have time for his paasing lanes to develop. Getting a good look is easier at 6'5" than at 5'8".

What mystifies me is the play calling at the end. We haven't passblocked all year. We have our two fastest guys behind the LOS. We had two timeouts. Try a little speed option to outside. Put the ball in the hands of JT5 and Marshall. Line up the abacks on the LOS and motion the reciever to and an extra blocker. I believe we ran that earlier in the game. Try the rocket. Try the dive off of the fake rocket that worked so well earlier.

Going to pass pass pass with 70 seconds left put us in the position to execute what we do worse than anything, except punt snapping.
