Why Brent Key should be HC

I appreciate Key’s love of Georgia Tech and his passion for the game. I wish things would have worked out for him, but it’s time to part ways amicably. I would shake his hand if I ever saw him on the street. I cannot say the same for Geoff Collins or Todd Stansbury.

I agree with this. However; the fan base seems really split. I think Key isn't ready. Maybe one day, we will be. But, it's not today., He needs to find a job, as an OC and learn more. Personally I think he failed as O line coach. Most people seem to miss that fact. He did not do well at a singular level. Was it his fault versus he was in bad situation? That I really cannot answer. However; the end result was he failed. We should not reward failure.

If we can afford to hire a good candidate as HC, we should go in that direction. However, if we won't have the money to do that for a few years, I'd rather go with Key than some random cut-rate guy. I do believe Key will instill a good culture and leave everything in much better shape for the next guy than it is right now even if he doesn't get us completely to where we want to go.

Basically, I'd rather have Coach Key than a Brian Gregory-type situation in the football program.

And if we do have Coach Key, I'll at least be able to feel good about him and the way the team is being run, which is a lot more than I can say about Collins. From the start with him it was, "I don't really like it, but if helps us win then okay."

The thing that would work in Key’s favor is I think he would be cheaper than the other guys on the wishlist. That would mean more money for coordinators. Having the HC manage the program and the coordinators manage their discipline is a better way to go. Having a football guru like CPJ/Leech/Spurrier makes the transition hard when they move on.

Really?? If so, why do I get so much push back, when I say Key wouldn't be a good head coach?

Because you have nothing other than the last 6 games to base that on. Performance (good or bad) as position coach doesn’t necessarily predict head coaching performance. Further muddying the waters, we have very limited insight into WHY the OL has underperformed. Position coaching is probably a factor (but Key’s employment history seems to indicate that he’s not without ability), along with personnel deficiencies, and possibly meddling/bad influence from the head coach.

In other words, you have no real idea whether he’d be a good head coach or not. He’s definitely been an improvement over the last guy in terms of not being an embarrassment, although he’s been hit with some tough circumstances at QB after he won his first two games.

Pretty sure you have every single poster in StinGTalk history on ignore.

There is no other possible explanation for such a ridiculous, absurd, inaccurate post.

To be fair, it's felt like there are more responses to posts like that claiming the other way, that he would be a good head coach, rather than ones that label him an unknown.

I understand. But what gets me is every coach who coaches at his alma mater always uses the fact he’s an alum /former player to ingratiate himself to the fanbase. Key did it when he talked about his love for this institution, blah, blah, blah. Don’t try and sell me that when you did nothing while it burned. I just want honesty not emotions.

I hope our next coach comes in at his first presser and says something along the lines of “I know very little about Georgia Tech as a school or it’s history. And honestly I don’t care about any of that. I am being paid to win football games so my job is easily defined as to how I will be judged. Sorry if I offend you by not attending basketball or volleyball games. None of that will help me win football games. And if I win a bunch of games I hope I am offered a bigger contract as I like big houses, yachts, and many zeros on my bank statements. I am a nice guy but I was not hired to be friendly to alumni or worry about things that do not lead to wins. The AD loves to talk to you. If I see you on the street and you yell “Go Jackets” to me and I don’t acknowledge you it’s not because I’m a jerk it’s because I’m thinking about which recruit to call next or which formation to use on 3rd and goal. I ask to be judged by winning or losing football games, nothing else.”
Sounds like an Art Briles type of coach to me.

I seen enough to know. Anyone with any remote football IQ would see the same. I think bringing Key on, would result in another 2-3 years of no bowls. Blatt is more than welcome to EFF around and find out, if he wants. I get it. Key is a "Tech Man". I honestly don't give two craps, about that. I care about a head coach that can, well, coach. I look at this, like a business. How can you lead a team, if YOU can't excel at any of the positions, within that team? As a team leader, you are expected to be able to step in and take over, should it be needed. Key FAILED, repeat, FAILED as the O line coach. I don't care about anything else than he failed. Stop making excuses for the man. If he succeeded and was the only bright spot on the staff, I would have a much different outlook. He deserves nothing than a pink slip, after this season. We can shake hands and walk away.

I’m not “making excuses,” I’m pointing out all the ways that your certainty is unwarranted and has no basis in objective fact. I have no strong opinion on Key at all. He seems like a breath of fresh air after Collins and a competent interim, but I lean toward thinking that (another) clean sweep and full reset is needed.

I don’t know. If he beats unc, I would at least hear him out on his plans. Who he would cut and who would stay and the reasons for each. I think Key has done a decent job as interim HC.

Collins set a low bar for whoever followed.
And we ain't beating UNC. Hell, Miami went nine quarters without a touchdown, of any kind, and punched our defense in the mouth Saturday. UNC might rip it to shreds. Never mind that we're going into the game with our, at best, third-string quarterback.
We've been better in some areas under Key. But we're still a long way from being anything remotely resembling a good team. Let's say Key is kept. He's got to wipe out most of the assistants, though.
I'm still in favor of a top to bottom defenestration of the staff. Offensive, defensive, S&C.

Because the qualities that make a good head coach are not the same qualities that make a good position coach?

Looking at the team preseason we were a 6 or 7 win team. That would be WCar and 5 from Acc+ ucf. Realistically, 4-4 in the acc. Clemson wasn’t going to be one of those wins. So 4-3 in the schedule Key faced. He is 3-3. That’s not far from where this team should be talent wise. Reach 4-3 and I would hear him out. He blew a great chance at that by losing to a bad uva team. Then getting booty blasted by two mediocre teams from Florida. But if he can get that 4th win by beating the two best teams in the coastal, so be it.

Now if he pitches bo staff changes, I would thank him for his time and be done. Same goes for a losing ACC record.
