Ya’ll keep cupping the sack

Sims has been keeping his head up and downfield more this season.. He is scanning the field better. He is staying in the pocket. His instinct last season was to pull the ball and run. His bootleg passes look better. He has two 300+ yard passing games this season vs none last season. His top 3 passing games are from 2021.
I'll agree with you on several of those points. I'll go even further, he's cleaned up his interceptions too, although we still have three games to go and two of those defenses are much better than what he has faced to date, so fingers crossed. BUT ESPN has him rated, based upon yds/game at 87th. EIGHTY SEVENTH! I know we can put some of that on the receivers dropping balls right in their hands. But there again, we should be seeing much better numbers from him simply based upon his accolades. But the numbers are showing about one more completion per game than last year to date. That is the system/coaching/whatever you want to call it. There again, that is one aspect of the program, care to talk defensive backfield?

Defensive backfield seems to break down. On the long first VT TD, or DB was totally caught peeking at the QB. Not sure if he was expecting safety help or not. However, it would help to shore up the DL and pass rush. Ivey is going to be a stud, could be Michael Johnson type. We need the DL to put pressure on the QB.

Even the play I reference above, the QB had way too little pressure on the play and was able to hold the ball 4 seconds or so and scan the field as he rolled out.

We just don't have a Michael Johnson, Darrell Richard, Vance Walker....on the team...yet. I think we are getting there and this next class looks promising for contributors and future anchors of the line.

On the subject of improvement, we've improved in most offensive metrics over last year except for 3rd down conversion %. In terms of yards per game for Sims, don't forget that's going to include NIU (not great performance, but a shortened one nonetheless) and UNC (good performance, still not a full game played). That first game alone is a huge statistical outlier that will mess up such rankings.

The overall limiting factor on offensive improvements is the line, which was going to be the case from the start but one could argue there's been less to see than there ought to be at this point. Defense is indeed a different story, though I do think we may actually be improved somewhat in the line and linebackers (but was a pretty low bar) and I was surprised to learn it appears we are giving up 6 less points per game this year compared to last (though obviously our defensive efficiency is somewhat worse).

So 45th is talent level in all of CFB is good? How many P5 teams were ahead of us? I stand by we had the worst P5 roster in college football. Not only that, we had no semblance of a QB capable of passing a football accurately. 45.1% in 2019, 61% 2021
FWIW, I looked back at the conference and the coastal from 2017 recruiting (redshirt senior class) in-conference class rankings to now. Not going to come to any conclusions about it other than I sure hope we can get a win on Saturday.

You do know P5 isn't all of college football? The Power 5 conferences.
I answered too quickly,my bad.
I'm looking - no non-P5 ahead of us so 44 ahead was correct
for 2019 the teams you'd compete with to be worst are ranked
70,72,74 Wash St,Kan St,Kansas
I don't think poor passing is enough to drop us that far

Cause I used to go over to see his mom when she was preggo. I put those dents in his head
I’m about to leave his moms house in 5 minutes. She told him he can come out of the basement then. I can’t figure out all his Wham posters in his room though.

If you check 247 for 2019, you'll see we had 45th rated talent.
which leaves 85 other teams lower,
"transitioning to passing" is a valid point but hard to quantify.
What's the excuse for the defense?
Without looking at the breakdown it was probably a whole lot of ATH's and RB's, maybe some DB's keeping that number in the 40's

So you don't know how college football works? We come in more experienced next season. Another year of S&C. A team like Pitt graduates everyone.

In your world, I'm guessing Clemson is still the #2 team in the country based on last season.
We had basically no turnover on defense as far as graduating seniors, or even transfers out, and our defense looks at best the same as last year. I agree that an offseason will help on offense, but so far, the offseasons have not shown to be useful at all for our defense.

Do you think we have been recruiting DL on par with other P5:schools for say....the last decade +?

In going back…
In 2912 we got Kallon (a 4 star), Pat Gamble (who really was good) and Gotsis.
In 2023 we got Robbins, Akins and Commissiong. Would have gotten Gnonkonde but PJ couldn’t get him into school. He wound up at UNC
2014 was Freeman (good freshman year), Simmons, and Whitehead. Much was expected of Whitehead but it didn’t happen

2015 was Glanton and Kyle Cerge Henderson
2016 was Jordan Woods (another 4 star), Chris Martin, Desmond Branch …. and Brandon Adams. That dude was going to be a force
2017 was Antwan Owens and Kelton Dawson
2018 was Domineck, Dingle (4star) and Chimedza

Shoot, even forgot one — Anree Saint-Amour.
I included Dingle on D line, though he was recruited as a OLB because he got moved there. I didn't include Jabari Hunt-Days (another former 4 star), though he went from LB to D line before exiting stage left.

some guys played and played well
Some didn’t pan out
Some didn’t stick around
