Sadly,it is time to drop UGA...

Did Tech and UGA stop playing the game before or not?

Is it necessary to namecall in every single post? Have you no brain that you can't discuss without falling down to the most basic of levels (red)?
So, you're going to reference something that happened 90 years ago, because the rivalry got too hardcore? That's your proof?

There's no point in discussing this. It's an idiotic idea. And if you're going to take the time out the day to type up a nitwit post on the internet, I'm going to call you out for bring a nitwit. Your facts are opinions or irrelevant. There's no end game, no purpose and no benefit. We drop UGA so our strength of schedule can go from slightly above average to well-below? So that St. Richt can stroll into a 4-star's house and convince him to come play for a winner? So we can schedule a big game against UAB or MTSU? So we can be a complete after-thought in the state of Georgia? So that our biggest "rival" is Clemson? Clemson.

Dropping UGA serves no purpose. It won't help recruiting, it won't help our image, it won't help our gate receipts. It will make us look like bitches though. But if I wanted to sit down when I peed, I could just be you.

Huh? FSU/UF, USC/CU, KY/UL, BYU/UTAH, CSU/UC, EC/NCS, WV/MARSHALL, LSU/TULANE, PURDUE/ND, etc etc.

Edit: MD/Navy, OSU/Cincy, A&M/Texas,

WV didn't play Marshall this year.
LSU didn't play Tulane this year.
OSU didn't play Cincy
A&M didn't play Texas
Navy didn't play MD
etc.

In the era of 8-9 conference games, you can't play everybody you used to.

Allen,I started the thread because we are at a big disadvantage against UGA and I think the ACC rivals CU,VT,Miami are plenty.Take a close look at our signees in Feb then look at UGA's.

not sure about VT but Clemson and Miami both recruit very well. Clemson may be on par with UGAy and other SEC schools not named Bama... Want to cancel those series too?

They are in our conference, UGAG is not.

Considering how constantly scared you are of looking like a bitch, I find your post incredibly ironic.

I have tried to convince my son that East Carolina is crazy to schedule a non-conference schedule with trips to NC State and UNC and a home game with Virginia Tech like they did this year, or next year as they play USC-E away and travel to Blacksburg while hosting the Tarheels. After winning at Chapel Hill and Raleigh this year and losing by 5 at home to VPI he simply said, "That's why. You can't have a sweeter season than to beat the Heels and Wolfpack."

This is why we play UGA and have to continue to play them. Nothing is as sweet as a win. I do like Mover's idea to try and move the game to Labor Day weekend every year.

I'm not scared of looking like a bitch. I learned from my time at Tech that you don't give up. Therefore, I don't bitch out.

I'm sad that a person who went to my school didn't pick that up.

We also stopped playing UGA for a while. You must be a real weenie to enjoy a victory using less than manly, watered down teams ever since we restarted the rivalry.

They stopped playing for 8 years from 1917 to 1924 because the two schools' administrations agreed that the rivalry was getting too intense (UGA insinuating we were cowards for continuing to play football during WWI, lots of fights, etc.). Not because one team had an advantage or pussied out. Dumbass.

I enjoy this game, and also see the pros and cons of both scenarios. I like the idea of playing on the first week best. What do you think the % of UGA fans was at this game and % Tech fans? I hate seeing so much red in our stadium. That is the one thing that bugs me the most about this game.

Only under legislative threat did they agree to resume the series. In other words, there is no law requiring the two schools to play each other. If they mutually wanted to end the series, they could.

I still see UGAg making that move if/when the SEC goes to a 9 game schedule.

GO JACKETS!!

What's sad is that you can't debate your side without ad hominem and/or personal attacks. And you brag that you're a Tech man? I didn't meet one person at Tech that couldn't think and debate instead shoot darts as their defense.

As to giving up, I have never said "give up". I've simply stated that playing UGA every year does not play into our hand nor does playing at the end of the year (as a minimum move it to game one). I want us to regroup, play UGA/AUB/ALA/UT but I want to do it more on our terms instead of UGA's terms.

I also believe we can strengthen with some time off. You mentioned that we have to play UGA every year, so the point of the era before where we didn't was simply to disclaim it, not make a point on why we should drop UGA right now.

But you already know all this.

Another Tech "man" who has to fall to ad hominem or personal attacks to defend his argument. Once again, I never ever said the rivalry ended for a while because one party was getting their ass kicked, that conclusion was made by you because you have nothing mature to offer in debate. It didn't matter that it took a break before, just that it did. Very simply now, it's a simple exercise in pointing out the fact that the series was ended (or interrupted) before.

I also think it's funny that we quit playing and thought of us as cowards at the time. And amazingly during this period, we won a national championship. I guess it must be tarnished because we didn't play UGA.

By the way, here's my original post. Nowhere does it talk about quitting because I'm scared of anybody. Let's talk facts if you choose to participate:

Your post is well supported by others including myself. The reason is simply that as a businessman I realize how powerfully negative the UGA loss is on our program. We lost to FSU 11 straight or something and it meant nothing, although it was frustrating at the time.
Losing to UGA is going to continue regularly and since it happens at the end of the year regularly Tech's future is going to dwindle more and more.
Tech needs to stop trying to play Goliath against Goliath. David didn't do that. We're supposed to be an elite thinking college but in reality we have zero brains in how we're handling our business in state. We are playing straight into UGA's hands and do nothing about it.

As a minimum we should play them the first game of the year (if UGA doesn't want to, then drop it). We have no depth considering all the constraints at Tech, playing what we make to be our most important opponent should not be when we are at our weakest. It's just plain DUMB scheduling.

Additionally by dumping UGA we take a huge issue out of the state for us and Tech is being hurt by it. Take the game away from the bully and the whole state politics changes. Remember Pitt and öööööö, remember the business school, remember the SEC, remember? Take it away and focus on what we apparently think is important and that is hanging around folks of our kind. And meanwhile build a new fan base. Since the state won't be divided, fans can root for any or both. We can grow our fan base and this is HUGE for the new tv ratings war, conference alignment, etc.

I could go on and on. You are absolutely correct. UGA stopped playing us in basketball at the Omni? We were kicking their ass. Anyone really remember that? Of course not. It's forgotten ten years later. As a business decision it's a very good one.

"Play into our hand"? You mean play a school better than us? And what about playing UGA, at home, was not on "our terms"? And how exactly do we strengthen anything by playing a much weaker schedule?

The simple fact (as opposed to all the half-cocked and wholly unsubstantiated opinions you've produced in this trainwreck) is that the University of Georgia in Athens is, and always has been, our main rival in all sports. And, while I could do it, I'll refrain from making an argument that, last year notwithstanding, the games have been competitive since Paul Johnson took over. But your solution to losing to our main rival is to simply walk away, in the vain hope that someday Georgia would, what, beg us to play them again? Because according to the apparent logic of the world in which you live, UGA is head, chest and shoulders above our program. Why on Earth would they ever consent to dealing with the series again? You know that great rivalry we have with Auburn? Neither do I. Like it or not, this rivalry is embedded into the fabric of GT sports, unless our world famous fight song is referring to the state itself.

You want a real analogy, try this one. You might be old enough to remember it. At one time, so I'm told, Pitt and Penn State was a thing. An important thing. Then one side started really leaning on the other and it broke off. And now it's not a thing any more. It's a footnote. And both schools are the poorer for it.

At the end of the day, you can choose to believe whatever mess you want. I wouldn't care if I didn't think that idiotic threads like this wouldn't get picked up and spread about. They will, especially if no one wades in and calls the lunatics out. But, I feel more than vindicated in my position when one of the few people on this board who's earned the right to have a voice in the discussion disagrees with you.

Oh brother. By the second sentence you've now charged me with playing an easier schedule (never said that), totally disregard any effort to focus on finding strengths that we can regain our footing/flanking, etc. and then finish by using another poster's opinion because you can't support your own.

The plain fact is this: In every sport, Athletic Directors and Head Coaches manipulate their schedules all the time in order to maximize their potential. UGA Volleyball dropped Tech, Where's the outrage? Tech WBB dropped UGA for a while. It's just not a big deal. We are getting it handed to us. Congratulate them and then find a way. For 50 years now, we haven't found a way. Try something new now.

I think this thread has given midatlantech new purpose in life.
