Tech is now dead last – 128 out of 128 – in 3rd down defense in the FBS. How is this a 7-page back and forth thread? What Ted Roof is doing is a big effing problem. Fin.

Probably because we are ~40th in FBS in pts/game, which is a more meaningful stat. Still not great by any means; but still better than UGA, Duke, USC, UNC, ND, Penn St., UCLA, Tennessee, FSU, Mich St., Mississippi State, Kentucky, Arkansas, Syracuse, Pitt, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, UVA, Perdue, Texas, TCU, and quite a few others. We are also roughly 40th in yards/game; again not great but not awful. Honestly I didn't expect us to be that high when I looked it up.

I'm pulling together some details to respond to the bleeding vj's in this thread. Gonna take me some time but I'll have something eventually. <insert joke about your moms taking all of my time here>

We all hope it's something better than, he won a championship at awburn and he needs 6 years to get "his" guys on the field to do better. ;)

Count me in the "give Ted time" camp. Defensive recruiting is on the upswing - we will see improvement once the talent levels rise. The 2009 defensive awesomeness had nothing to do with scheme and everything to do with personnel. I want to see how things develop over the next two seasons with Roof.
I agree, but I would like to see a playcalling change this year. I realize that blitzing is risky, but we absolutely cannot generate a pass rush with 4 guys. We are ööööing terrible at it. öööö, our DE's are relatively mobile - throw some zone blitzes at them if we are worried about getting killed by screens and drag routes. Anything but what we're doing now. It's to the point that I can't even get excited about stops on 1st and 2nd down because I know they'll pick up 3rd and long easily unless the QB throws a bad pass or the WR drops it.

Ok, who are we blitzing with?

Yes, we know you don't know how you feel. Either that or you are schizophrenic.

Why would you judge Roof on his recruiting before he has his own players on the field as 4th and 5th year guys?

Because if you can really recruit well it has an impact in years 2 and 3 already

The fact that true freshmen have played and started in the past few years should tell you something about the quality of the upperclassmen from his predecessor.

The Ted Roof Inn: offenses are guaranteed stays between 7-10 minutes and they always score

Duke scored on 5 of 12 meaningful drives, one of which started at the 10 yard line and lasted one play.

You mean they also scored on not meaningful drives?

No they had one drive at the end of the first half with like 30 seconds to go. I did not count that against them. They had 13 total possessions.

Lmao if you watched that game and said to yourself, "this defense is fine" then you are a joke.
