If StinGTalk is representative of the fan base

He can win the coastal and still be on the hot seat.

bruh wut

people who are calling for cpj head after yesterdays loss know we're not going to winning the coastal or anything. if he were tho, it'd be more than enough every year for most people/fans.
But you can't prospect and see us beating tons of ACC teams after the loss yesterday. that'd be just blind faith.. and having blind faith in cpj coached teams over the years isn't very solid ground

Yesterday did flip the switch for me from a vocal supporter to leaning the other way. That said, if we go 7-3 in our remaining games, expectations would be met and I couldn't really call for his dismissal/retirement or whatever. Anything less isnt really going to do it because I do believe someone could win 6-7 games here with a more fundamentally sound brand of football without the embarrasing flaws. Our defense and special teams were not FBS caliber yesterday.

I can tell that ST is not representative of the fans that I know. Of course most of the fans I know are alumni, so I guess we have a different perspective than folks that don’t have the same kind of tie to the school.

By the end of the game we were down 4 defensive starters, and missing a couple of guys that would normally be on the two deep due to injury. Made for a pretty young defense playing under a new DC. Also don’t forget we lost AJ Gray who was supposed to be with us.

I just chuckled at the folks that thought the defense was going to be magically better under Nate Woody in his first year. Unrealistic expectations are unrealistic.

Excellent post. Our problems go beyond coaching. I think Georgia Tech has a leadership problem that is spilling over into Athletics. There are people above the head football coach that need to go.

I just don’t think things are all that bad. Last year TQM was a first year starter. A few years ago, we won the Orange Bowl and were a few points away from being in the 4 team playoff. I don’t expect us to be in the Top 10 every year because we haven’t been in the Top 10 every year since the days of Dodd.

I expect this year to be better than last, and I expect a really good season next year.

I think much of the fan base has left CPJ; but they are fickle. Put together wins over VT & Miami and win the coastal or go to a decent bowl game this year and some of them will be back. USF will likely end the season in the top 25 like they did last year; so it isn't like we just lost to a team who can't spell bowl. TQM showed improvement over last year as did much of the offense. Blocking, particularly on the edges was good; if the defense can be improved week to week we can beat VT and Miami and most of the other ACC teams we will play except Clemson.

If we get to a bowl game CPJ will not get fired; but CPJ isn't getting any younger and he doesn't have too many years left in him. I think if we miss a bowl game this year he is going to start seriously thinking of retiring.

Sad thing is I don't see us giving Clemson or UGA a good game, unless those teams start beating themselves.

I’ve been a CPJ supporter but can feel the antipathy from the Tech fans and alumni I come in contact with...it’s not good. He needs to go on a run or risk losing the fan base, if he hasn’t already.

Back to the OP, yes I think we should be planning for CPJs departure even if he hangs on for another 2-3 years. Its what the AD is supposed to do. Hope for the best but prepare for the unbest. Don't pretend everything is rosy and dole out extensions every year without showing performance/making progress. CPJ could actually be around in 5 years if he was seriously addressing some of the deficiencies but if you don't admit you have a problem...

3 Injuries on offense.

2 injuries on defense
2 defensive players ejected
1 defensive starter left in preseason

And you want to blame the coach. Puzzling logic.

i think we have at least 6 acc wins.

I would bet everything I have that if you polled all Tech fans, that the vast majority are ready for a change. Tifwiw.
Of course they are. We just lost yesterday. People were ready to fire CPJ in the middle of 2014 after we had lost to UNC and Duke. Then we rattled off a streak of wins and didn't see many of them again until things fell apart in 2015.

Surely not. If we have a good season, why would you want to fire him?

I’ve heard talk from quite a few random people that I’ve met on flights and stuff over the last few years that never liked him and have wanted him gone for a while.

I like him and his offense and want him to succeed here, but making bowl games every year is my absolute minimum threshold, so the bloom is off the rose a bit due to the last few years and this year’s apparent trend.

I do understand the bitter reaction to yesterday’s loss. You should not blow a ten point second half lead, giving up the game’s final 21 points. You should never give up back to back KO returns for touchdowns. You should not fumble the chance to win away late. Much like Tennessee last year, we just threw away a performance that should have been a win. We are clearly not ready to face challenging foes on the non-conference schedule.

What I don’t understand is the fire CPJ reaction. We are 1-1. We have ten games to play. If this ends up being another losing season let’s bring on the debate then. I might sadly agree if the record shows four or less wins. Five wins would be my hard to decide number. But, with games against Pitt, UVA, UNC, and Bowling Green we can easily get to five wins. Clemson, Miami, Virginia Tech, Duke, Georgia and Louisville should gives us a shot at another win or two. It is going to get old praising CPJ after every win and calling for his head after every loss.

I agree. Athletic success is not a priority for our leadership. They only care about what Tech can do to maximize their earnings and career. Our current AD sems to be the first since Homer Rice that cares about Tech.

Providing recruiting flexibility for the Football and Basketball teams, will not diminish our academic rankings. I am confident that Duke and Stanford regularly accept athletes that are off limits for us. I know from personal experience that Vanderbilt will.

Changing the coach and the offense will not solve the problem.

I want Georgia Tech to succeed, and my opinion is that CPJ gives Tech it's best chance. So I hope CPJ can succeed because if he is fired then Tech is going to be in a world of hurt.

CPJ is perfect by no means, but if Tech could admit more talented players by lowering admission standards and offering other degree programs, our problems would be solved a lot quicker.

It's hard to compete when most other schools we play against have a "fog the mirror test" for admissions standards.

This horse has been beaten ad nauseam though.

ST is not representative of IRL alumni fans I know at all.

Those folks have had it for CPJ years ago and I’ve basically been the only one defending him.

Because this is exactly what last season looked like. This game was basically Tennessee or Miami from last season. We have a great lead entering the 4th quarter and suddenly we’re on the losing side of the game at the final whistle.

The reason people are reacting so quickly is because this game led to memories from last season flooding back again.
