How is Collins the top candidate is Whiz has the job offer?
I was told whiz discussed an offer, but that its incorrect he has one. I think there is some fake news being put out there too.

What is interesting, is yesterday i knew and was going to post about GOL pushing Collins. I didn't. only to see KQ say something to that affect today, totally independent of me and my sources.

this is the first double validation I have had in this whole thing....take it for what its worth.

Who do you like? I thought you enjoyed being miserable. :rotfl:
I thought Mike Houston who was at James Madison might have been good. But evidently I thought more of him than he thought of himself. He had a deal with Charlotte, then reneged, then signed with East Carolina. So he wasn't ready for P5 I guess. But I would be in favor of interviewing somebody, anybody at this point.

How does reneging on a deal with Charlotte demonstrate he's not ready for P5 football? Charlotte is CUSA, ECU is AAC. Probably nothing more complicated than the usual reasons you choose one school over another... money, admin support, etc.

Lest you forget, the AAC is a power 6 team!

It would be interesting to hear GOL quote.

I would be shocked if he pushed Collins ahead of Key.

Mike Houston? Seriously? Aren't you the guy that's wanted PJ gone for about 8 years? And you want Mike Houston to replace him? Jeez man. I'm sure kids would be fired up to come play for James Madison's Mike Houston.

I don't think I've seen this here anywhere yet but this bio is a pretty good read about Collins:

https://owlsports.com/coaches.aspx?rc=1959&path=football

  • In 2007, he worked at Alabama as the director of player personnel under head coach Nick Saban and had the #1 recruiting class in the country.
  • He spent the 2006 season at Georgia Tech as director of player personnel. Georgia Tech secured their best recruiting class in team history that year as well.
  • Before coaching in the SEC, he sharpened his teeth as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Florida International University in 2010. During that season, his defense was ranked first in the Sun Belt Conference in total defense, scoring defense, pass defense efficiency, and turnover margin.

Edit: Oh yeah, and this:

  • While Collins has gained notoriety for being innovative and energetic, his accomplishments in his first year as head coach can not be overlooked.
Wa

Wait, he oversaw that 2007 recruiting class with Morgan, Dwyer, Burnett, etc??

Now, I'm sold. You see, this is a reason to pick a coach. Not a cheese steak video.
I thought Giff Smith was the recruiting coordinator for that class. Who is more responsible, the recruiting coordinator or the director of player personnel?

It seems the main attraction with Collins is recruiting, but its hard to see how Collins has made a big impact there. A week ago, before I'd heard of Collins, I would have said Giff was responsible for the 2007 class, and Alabama has certainly not hurt in recruiting since Collins left. His list of all time recruits posted elsewhere in this thread is underwhelming.

His first two classes at Temple are underwhelming by rivals:
2017: Not in top 100
2018: #76

Temple is never going to be a recruiting hot bed though, so it's hard to judge too much on that.

Are there other things that make people think Collins will be good a recruiting?

I think a good litmus is how the current team's fans feel about the candidate leaving. I feel pretty good about a hire like Collins over some bigger names like Gus. Auburn fans absolutely hate him and want him gone
Auburn fans have PTSD from the greatest coach of the past 40 years taking up residence in the archrival and steamrolling the world. They are not good judges of Gus, IMHO.
