Inexcusable Loss?

All of my criticism has been 100% fair and they are most certainly not personal. Sycophants feel the need to defend the mediocrity, it’s why they get butthurt at the first sign of negativity regarding their glorious leader.
He was not a good custodian of the program. Recruiting good players was too hard, so he didn’t do it. Working with the AD to negotiate and sell The Hill on why it’s important to have good football was too hard, so he didn’t do it.
Adding variation to his offense was too hard, so he didn’t do it.

Leading GT to where we think it should be was too hard, so he quit.

That’s my biggest gripe, is that he was not putting his best effort for Georgia Tech. And that’s not unfounded. To me, it seems like the entire endeavor was to prove that the offense could work at D1 FBS and use our fine Institution to experiment on.

I believe GT can and will be better than we have since O’Leary left. It’s a damn travesty that it’s taken so long to find the guy that recognizes how good GT should truly be.
And collect a gazillion dollars while he's doing it.

Our OL is in worse shape now than after 3 games of 2015.
Yeah, I think the bottom line is that the fans that are so mad at the current staff aren't being fair about OL. It was going to be a rebuild before Johnson left, got worse when Braun left, got worse when Hansen got hurt. Honestly, I think the offense would have struggled this year under Johnson. It would be OK and maybe good but it would have taken awhile and would have depended on if Oliver could run most of the offense and pass which weren't guarantees.

Throw in that we don't have a single passing QB that is ACC quality and we are what we are.

I disagree. PJ was always pushing leadership for additional resources. He did so publicly and, I would guess, did a lot more privately. He busted his ass recruiting but had less recruiting staff than Georgia State and Duke. Additionally, the AD did nothing - he came from a school that didn’t even have a football team and didn’t care about it.

Adding variation? Just not true. See every poll since Vad Lee.

Did he quit? Was he forced out? I really don’t know, but he hasn’t gone off and trashed GT since he left. He’s remained a fan and loyal to the school, and I appreciate that.

It’s possible he did get burned out and truly wanted some time with his family. And, if that’s the case, seeing how Army has done, I would’ve liked seeing how Monken could have done here at GT.

Re: Recruiting. According to every HS coach interviewed, we had zero presence amongst almost every metro ATL HS during the PJ Regime. Getting into an SUV and driving around isn't that complicated nor expensive but PJ couldn't be bothered to do it. CGC is having to re-establish a GT presence locally because it's been missing for over a decade, which is completely inexcusable.

I would've liked to have seen the Pistol in more than the handful of games it was used before passing judgment on it. It couldn't have looked much worse against elite teams than the 2017-18 QB Keeper offense looked.

Monken would've fared as well as PJ did. 7 wins/year and no bump in recruiting. Kids don't want to play in his offense either.

The belief that PJ got no resources is a myth. PJ pushed for - and got - resources for a state-of-the-art indoor practice facility in 2011. Not sure why this is forgotten all the time when people complain about PJ not getting resources.

After his first season at Tech, Johnson made known to Radakovich his desire for an indoor facility. His wish was granted last fall when John Brock, a Tech grad and Coca-Cola Enterprises chairman and CEO, and his wife, Mary, gave a $3.5 million lead gift.

The project will come in on budget at $9 million. The original estimate was $6-7 million before Tech added architectural and sustainability pieces, such as a 280,000-gallon rainwater-collecting cistern, that increased the pricetag.

But the ability to match or surpass the bells and whistles of rival schools was not a small consideration. Linebacker Steven Sylvester said that recruiting trips can be repetitive and that “you want to see something that stands out.”

Tech and Duke will be the first ACC schools to boast football-specific indoor facilities. Virginia Tech and North Carolina share field houses with other sports. Clemson and Florida State have plans for their own indoor fields. Boston College uses an inflatable bubble.

yep. Still NO EXCUSE TO LOSE to Citadel (that's for the CGC haters) but this looks like 2015 all over again. I hope the FSU moment is against the mutts.

Ok. So don’t say he didn’t push for resources (which was the statement I was rebutting). Still, he didn’t have the recruiting staff that Georgia State had.

Nonetheless, I’ll concede PJ isn’t as savvy recruiting as GC.

The biggest problem with all the threads is we can’t say our coaching staff sucked in that loss to The Citadel without somebody trying to blame PJ for the loss. And that is just incredibly, mind boggingly, epically retarded. And then it leads to comparisons and arguments over what one coach has done and can do vs another coach.

nothing PJ did or didn't do excuses Collins' poor game mgmt, dumb QB decision making, not knowing about when the clocks starts / ball snapped / WTFever.

So let me get this straight, you FOPs should really be OK with this... If the season doesn't show signs of significant improvement we fire Pdude and hire CPJ as OC and return to the option except that CGC would make him modernize it to appeal more to better recruits.
I am perfectly fine with moving to another offense that isn't the triple option; but I never thought that offense was going to be the triple quarterback rotation. I prefer watching the triple option to the triple quarterback rotation. At least with the T-Option the O-line looked like they knew what they were trying to do and we weren't handing off from the shotgun formation on 4th and a yard. I don't want CPJ back as an OC, I can only hope this offense looks better later in the season; and the offense looks nothing like this next season.

Is BK the OC heir apparent if Patdude is let go?

Excellent analysis

The team that ended 2018 with embarrassing losses to UGA and Minnesota lost 14-15 starters depending on whose depth chart you use, so even though CPJ would have definitely beaten The Citadel GT FB was in for a long difficult season based on lack of OL depth and our inability in the passing game to keep teams honest on Defense

One of the bright spots so far is Ahmarean Brown, without a coaching change he is definitely not a Yellow Jacket

I have no idea how people could be surprised that after recruiting something like 4 OL (or whatever low number it is) in the past 3 seasons and no QBs based upon their ability to pass we can’t reliably protect the QB or throw downfield.
What if I told you that for 2017&2018 GT signed 6 offensive linemen while Temple signed 7? Or that currently GT has 19 OL on the roster and Temple has 16.

https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/teams/TEMPLE/temple-owls/roster/

Or what if I told you our OL coach makes more than our DC or OC and is probably the highest paid position coach in the ACC. Would you then be at least curious why we can't protect the QB against the Citadel?

Dude, we love you dearly, (no homo) but your opinion on anything about Paul Johnson is as well respected as @gtleviathan’ opinions about Trump. You let your personal feelings get in the way of your brain.
I can assure you personal feelings don’t get in the way.
I’m simply providing the truth. I would say you and the other Johnsonians are the GTLev, as you are truth denying.

I respect the opinion of an actual player who played for PJ and knows him personally far more than a bunch of Scheme First TO Fanboys who salivate at every mention of the word "Option".

Is it possible that if you sign big people with the right body types then you end up with less "shrinkage" due to injury?

CPJ liked to sign guys that were G5 Recruits on the OL that came out of HS at 265lbs dripping wet and then 4 yrs later half of them have given up FB due to Medical Issues

Maybe if CPJ worked harder at recrootin and recruited OLs that were at least 6-4 & 300lbs coming out of HS like the rest of the P5 we'd be a lot deeper on the OL right now

Less guys retiring early due to Medical Issues might have something to do with getting the right body type for P5 physicality instead of recrootin to your system

9 of the OL on the roster are 6-4 or over, and 9 are 300 lbs or over. You really should look at the roster before posting.

Only 1 of our current 2020 OL recruits is over 300 lbs, and 2 are less than 6-4. Our top OL recruit is only 285lbs dripping wet.

Maybe you, SBJ, and the other "404'ers" should do a little homework before throwing out another attack against our current players.

The heights and weights are inflated by a couple inches and ~20lbs.

What if I told you our OL coach has been proven to take a mediocre option lineman and turn him into serviceable non-option lineman?

Would you then at least be curious why the current guys are unable to do it?

How many of those OL are walk-ons on each roster?
