Outside of Miami and occasionally UNC or NCST, playing all of those teams sucks. The list of teams you named is the reason I hate being in the acc.

When I put on my basketball hat, I definitely agree. There is strong gravitational force within the ACC, centered in Carolina, focused on basketball. When I lived in RTP, ACC basketball was like a religious cult. Everybody knew every player on every team. Football was casual, basketball was dead serious business. When I moved back to Atlanta, it never felt the same, even when we had a good team.
What’s changed over the years is how the football arms race has gotten so absurdly expensive. The ACC could historically be a top (sometimes the top) basketball conference with decent to very good football, but keeping up football now is harder, more expensive.

The money is going to eliminate historical advantages for ACC in basketball too. Coaches and facilities will flock to the big money in the SEC for non-football sports too.

Could definitely see the rise of pods to help preserve annual rivalries, ensure regular play through the entire conference, and to help structure post season play for a championship.

Could also see 1 unified league or 1 conference who has all the top recognizable college brands. Going from 12 teams to 16 teams can be tricky, getting the right schools to ensure each addition gives more than it eats. But if you have all the brands, there’s a lot more bargaining power to dictate terms since conferences aren’t competing for distribution. Might be the only way to eventually get back to stability and preserving regional rivalries, which benefits everybody. There has to be some larger sport preservation at some point I hope.

Will any of the remaining Big 12 schools look to join the ACC now that their conference is exploding? I would rather add a Texas school to the conference than another northern school. We need to get to 16 with or without ND.

They might “contend” but their chances of winning the conference championship and making the playoffs would decrease by at least 50%. Notre Dame has been embarrassed too many times in the postseason in the past two decades playing in games they had no business playing just because their brand name and fan $upport got them there to believe otherwise.

It makes sense from a scheduling standpoint (7 division+2 cross-division with 3 OC).

No we don't. Unless math isn't important anymore. Why do you think the Big 12 stayed at 10 members?

The remaining Big 12 schools would be net takers. They are hoping for lifelines. They will soldier on in some form with another expansion, likely with Houston and BYU.

The primary reason Comcast doesn't offer ACCN is because ESPN is adamant they (comcast) include it in their base package. Comcast doesn't want to do that, they want to offer it in a sports bundle. Comcast currently has around 20.4 million residential video subs if I'm not mistaken. That represents over 367 million in annual revenues to ESPN if CC carries it in the base. That's significant. It's not a gap closer, but it's in the right direction by a pretty good clip. It's my understanding we don't need a "look in" or open market negotiation to benefit from that added revenue either. With regards to ACCN specifically, its a direct formula within the compensation pkg based on revenues that would add immediately to the annual pay out. Kind of the point why they made such a big deal about the ACCN in the first place and a carrot they used to get the ACC presidents to commit to the extended terms on the GOR.

We will see shortly if ESPN's stubborn stance will pay off. IIRC, Comcast current contract with ESPN/Disney expires end of Jan 22? Maybe there will be a concession somewhere so they can add ACCN into the base pkg. It probably wouldn't hurt if everyone in ACC land who has Comcast let them know they want ACCN and they want it in the base pkg or they are going to look elsewhere. Youtube TV has it included, as does Charter Spectrum (although not sure CS offers it in their base). Comcast needs to get on board.

Giving Big12 that just imploded as an example of why we shouldn’t expand isn’t a very good idea. I agree with the overall sentiment though, I’d rather stay at 14 than add more ööööty teams nobody cares about.

Given that we keep adding Big East teams while giving ND preferred status to maybe improve our bowl outlook, maybe the Big12 model would be a step up.
