The shuffle pass at the end….

It should never have come to 4th down. That’s the issue. Gibbs picks up 4 yards from the 7 to 3. 1st and goal. Pound up the middle and we score. Instead we waste 1st and 2nd down. Mason picks up 2 on 3rd up the middle. Never should have gone to 4th down. Ridiculous play calling. Just like before halftime.
Do you guarantee it or something?

Usually that’s what people who are blindly guessing do.

I’ve blocked traps for running backs hundreds if not thousands of repetitions in games and practice. Every one of them boiled down to one of two things: turn up in the hole or kick out. Never have I seen the technique used on that play.

Watched the end of the game recording yesterday and I must say the playcalling after Gibbs run to give us the 1st down was head scratching to say the least. 1st down incomplete to McGowan on the sideline(wish Yates would have pump faked and McGowan broke back inside) that would have worked. 2nd down wide reciever pitch was a complete waste. Finally on 3rd we give to Mason who gets 2 yards. And then fnally the ill conceived TE shuffle pass. Go back and watch. Clemson's defenders were standing around with their hands on their hips. A sure sign they were tired and on their heels. This is when you play smashmouth and attack with your 2 best weapons Gibbs and/or Mason.

So answer the question. Do you or do you not guarantee that your guess is the right one?

Cause then someone else can guess differently and also guarantee his guess.

Yeah, that's what I thought.

We really need a under center, power-I formation Goal-line package- fullback lead blocker, two tight ends, and pound it 4 straight times with Mason.

I can guarantee what we tried didn't work.

We probably should have tried pounding it up the middle on 1st down with Mason.

So your hindsight is 20-20.

That and two dollars will get you a cup of coffee.

Of course hindsight is 20-20. I'll guarantee we would have scored if we hand it off to you and let you run up the middle four times. Can you guarantee we wouldn't?

There will always be second guessing and Monday morning quarterbacking. That's what message boards are for.

Overall the coaches looked much approved this week. Came in with a good solid plan on both sides of the ball and for the most part, called a good game. They still have a ways to go with things like clock management and getting plays in faster but hopefully they know that and will improve on it

I think #70 has been our worst graded lineman for the first two games, so unfortunately it wasn't a big surprise he missed this one too....

Of course I would have scored, because any defensive player who touched my defenseless ass would be called for targeting.

I think coaches overthink this goal line stuff. Line up heavy, or bunch everything up over to one side - then pitch it to the RB and let him race for the far pylon, with the option to just dive across the line at any point. If the defense stops that, it's a SC top 10 play. Cool, can you do it again? Or, go 4 wide and drag someone in motion and let QB run it up the middle with RB as lead blocker. LBer has to make a fabulous play.

Heck yeah I guarantee it. I know this, Mason picks up yards. 1st and goal from the 3, heck yes Mason is scoring. GUARANTEED.

I know throwing passes inside the 5 behind an OLine that is one of the worse in the conference won’t work. I’ve seen that for 2 years and 3 games.

The 4th down play call was fine. FWIW, to me it looks like it was a read play, not a straight called shovel pass. You have Mason going wide and Yates running to the edge and reading the end. OLB is on Mason, End takes Yates so his read is the Shovel to the middle. Hindsight I think the play there is pitch it to Mason. End had Yates so you either pitch out or shovel to the middle. There was traffic all in the middle and Clemson had numbers advantage (we had 6 to block 7). Mason was 1/1 with the freshman LB, I think he wins that battle into the endzone. I wouldn't mind that same play call with Gibbs as the back and Mason as the H back.

Watch Mason and his reaction, he wanted the pitch. It should be cued up to the correct time.

Like others stated, the bad decision was on 1st down. We shouldn't have called timeout, we were moving and they were on their heels. Run up to the line and run Mason or Gibbs up the gut, then call timeout. If we get 2 yards there, then you have 3 play calls to get 2 yards. Instead we didn't go back up the middle until 3rd down so we had one shot at a 2 yard play.

Lol. It’s easy to guarantee something when you don’t have to be right.

I'm no expert but it looks like Cooper's man beat him too and would have made a play on Deveney. At least I think that's him exiting stage left with head in the sky after the play is blown up.
