Official argue about the old coach thread

You said CPJ is a helluva Coach.

"Helluva Coaches" don't leave Programs in shambles and destroy all the Goodwill with the in-State HS FB Coaches after 11 years on Campus, if he were truly a helluva Coach he would have left everything in much better shape after he resigned.

No diatribe, I merely listed multiple examples as to why CPJ was never a helluva Coach.

GT Fans need to learn the difference between being a helluva coach and a "1 trick pony".

We had a 1 trick pony, guys that are helluva Coaches pay attention to all aspects of their FB Programs, including Recruiting and Public outreach & PR.

Maybe you should learn what Guys that are helluva Coaches actually do to earn that Title!
Geoff, I can agree with some of what your pushing in this thread but How many “helluva coachs” have actually gone out on top and left their program in great shape? hell 2018 is Solid proof that the man could coach, he won 6 games with a A-back playing QB

And solid proof he needed to go.

If tomorrow the NCAA rules the forward pass illegal, I'm sure Mike Leach, as an offensive genius, can just scheme around that, right?

While this example is ridiculous, you can see how your logic is terrible. Rules changes will affect some schemes more than others.

As for CPJ, those rules changes hit around the same time as the lack of support from Bobinski and some terrible recruiting classes. The rules changes certainly hurt us with what limited production from subpar recruiting classes. We weren't as easily able to scheme and execute ourselves to wins. It was somewhat of a perfect storm.

I always imagine what would have happened if Bobinski wasn't hired and we had better support for football and recruiting. At the very least we end up with better personnel and an easier transition.
He should have hired a new S&C coach that could have added muscle to our receivers and running backs so that they could block legally. This rule change had no effect on our inability to recruit. Try again…

Had no effect on recruiting 2 and 3 star athletes?

If CPJ is such a coaching genius, explain what happened in his 3rd year when the Trend should be upward?

Helluva Coach, hardly!

Once other HCs adjusted to cut blocks & low Contact he went thru a run (2010 thru 2013) where he was horrible vs the toughest 4 Teams on our Sked, he was worse than Chan vs those 4 Teams until 2014 , bowls vs Air Force & Olé Miss were a harbinger of things to come.

Your problem is that you have a "CFB inferiority complex", your inferiority complex leads you to love being known as the only P5 Team running the Triple , rather than a P5 Team that takes advantage of the nearby wealth of HS Talent that CAN GRADUATE from GT and play 10 win CFB.

That's the real reason I have such a problem with CPJ Fanboyz, I felt Chan had us on the verge of going on a run of 9 & 10 win seasons had we found a QB, he had made inroads with HS Coaches in GA, he had built a stable Program and then our stupid behind the scenes "FB Guys" made the decision to go with the friggin' Triple Option and ultimately destabilize GT FB for what may be the better part of 2 decades.

11 years of HS Recruits not taking your Team seriously can destabilize you for almost 20 years, unless the right Guy with the right attitude takes the Job, so regardless of "genius play calling", this is the 1 reason we should all get behind CGC, it takes a Guy with his mindset to dig us out of the :crapstorm: that CPJ left us in.

GT Fans should be smart enough to have figured out by now , Games aren't won with genius playcalls , Games are won when Players play mistake free FB and execute under the pressure of Game situations.

It has always been about the Players (mainly Linemen), and it will always be about the Players (mainly Linemen), a few blips of a gimmick diving at the opponents kneecaps system doesn't change the General Rule

Chan couldn't even win the acc with Megatron, choice, Thomas, and coach tenuta. He was never going to get a better chance than 06.

He didn't have a QB.

Similar to Michigan & Harbaugh trying to beat Ohio State with Game Mgrs while Ohio State was running NFL Draftees out there are QB.

You high point for the other guy is pissing off Recruits and HCs for 11 straight years, while losing to Duke & UNC and needing a blown call vs Ga Southern to avoid a 2nd Half implosion and a loss to them(2014 Season)

I guess people like to bash CPJ so they won't have to focus on what's happening now. You know, the greatest rebuild in the history of competitive team sports. Hey, we can dream about 4-star recruits. In a few more weeks, this will be over, and we'll be back to fantasy football, again.
Dude!

Please understand this:

The NCAA changed blocking rules, getting low level Recruits to flip from Wofford and Appy State to dive at DLinemen's kneecaps wasn't going to be sustainable, a-backs and WRs had to block differently, we no longer had any advantage vs P5 Teams that set aside 1 practice period the entire year just to be ready for us, we could no longer run jet sweeps vs. friggin' Duke, we had turned into a QB keeper offense, there were no more Wallers or Smelters in the pipeline, HS Coaches wouldn't return CPJ's calls anymore.

At the end that last Bowl loss vs Minnesota & PJ Fleck was as good as it was ever going to be going forward.

The tough talking CPJ saw the writing on the wall and became a quitter, people that Retire from FB Coaching with honor announce it at the beginning of the season , CPJ saw the incoming 'Croots and said I QUIT.

That's the guy you're trying to deify.

Chan was given less of a chance than CPJ. CPJ's saving grace, what endeared him to certain fans who wanted to make him coach for life, was beating UGAg in 2008 and winning the ACC in 2009, despite being embarrassed by UGAg in 2009. Justin Thomas came along and was a special player for us who thankfully didn't decide to play DB for Alabama.

A lot of our blocking, like the Cam Chancellor game, would have been 15 yard penalties under the new rules. Amazing some fans don't know this.
