2023 Recruiting

So, I went back and checked top DL in 2022. Of the top 20 DT's named, 4 of them were between 5'11" and 6'1". That's 20% of the NFL's top 20 DT's according to this article. They were:

Aaron Donald (LAR) - 6'1"/ 280 lbs.
Poona Ford (SEA) - 5'11"/ 310 lbs.
Grady Jarrett (ATL) - 6'0"/ 305 lbs.
Ed Oliver (BUF) - 6'1"/ 287 lbs.

It's really not uncommon to have a shorter, but very stout man playing the DT position. I wouldn't say it's the norm, but it's certainly not uncommon.

There are always guys who buck the trend, and I think it's fine to take a few swings at the margins every year. But the majority of guys are going to be ones who fit the prototype. Coaches assume they're going to have to develop every player, and if it's at all close between two players--one who has the ideal measurables and one who doesn't--they're going to take the one who has them every time.

My initial response was to the assertion that shorter, stout guys cannot play at the DT position. There are those who do and it’s not at all uncommon even though it is not optimal.

The days of going after 5* players aggressively and spending a lot of time on them are gone.

Clown spent too much time chasing those guys for very little result. Key has a different philosophy. More about building the right roster with the right kids.
Yes but Marco Coleman had already built a relationship with this kid from Michigan State. Especially if you start early on these kids and end up having a good season it’s worth it.

He's gonna have a lot of people offering him. And they'll be offering more than scholarships and more than we can afford. Other coaches at other schools are building relationships with this kid, too.
If it's a 50-50 shot, or even one in three, sure, go after this. But if it is a longshot, we need to focus on better returns on the recruiting trail investment.

With the last 5-star D lineman commit we had, Brian Kelly gathered up his entire staff and flew them down to talk to Tuitt. We ain't in that end of the resource pool.
Yet. Hopefully J Batt can get us there. That's still more of a if than a when, though.

Isn't that interesting, that Paul Johnson, supposed terrible recruiter, was able to get a 5 star DL to commit to Tech, yet Geoff Collins, supposed great recruiter, never sniffed a 5 star.

Didn’t that 5 star not come though?
