Stephen Hill just declared for the NFL draft.

He should've stayed and gotten physically bigger and better. Stats mean almost nothing when it comes to the draft. Whether he could improve his stats next year or not, he would've hopefully gotten more muscle and experience. Both of those would improve his draft stock.

Also, I questioned his toughness at various points throughout this past year. Anyways, good luck to him, and I hope he proves us all wrong and has a great rookie season with whomever picks him up.

I appreciate his time here, but I think he should've stayed. I think he is just doing what vegas visitors do: only looking at the prize.

I think Hill realizes that if he's going to make money in the NFL it will be on the second contract not the first. Leaving a year early makes him a year younger when / if this big second contract comes. He probably sees an NFL practice squad free of academic distractions as a better place to develop his talents while making a six figure salary btw.

I think that most people would leave school early to pursue a dream job if they knew they would be making $100K for 1-2 years with a chance to make millions for another 2-4 years if things went well. You can always come back and finish school later as long as you put money away for it.

This decision doesn't necessarily say anything bad about the school or our coach.

I was contesting the fact that 1992 was saying that a 4th round pick (which is still a mid-round pick) wasn't going to get even $200,000 next years. UFA's will make almost twice that.

If Hill goes in the 4th round he should push around $600,000 - $700,000 in salary from very limited research. To your point he could be an idiot and completely blow it, but let's not pretend that this amount of money isn't very enticing to a 20-21 year old and if managed well (huge IF) could be life changing if made over a several year career.

Agreed. I was just making a point that the league minimum probably won't be enough to set him up for life.

I am so sick of people leaving early. It really makes it hard to step up in big time games.

Who could have anticipated that CPJ would have issues keeping his players from jumping to the NFL. I thought CPJ couldn't recruit NFL caliber talent.

This got me thinking...is Hill the first CPJ recruit to leave early for the NFL? He is, right? Unless you count Ant I guess.

anyways, he's not really NFL caliber yet IMO, but that didn't stop players in the past.

Even if he does somehow get drafted, he still has to make the team and he has to do it starting out at a disadvantage. He has a tough road ahead of him. It's more than likely that this will turn out to be nothing more than a decision to quit school.

In today's world and I don't have the numbers but I would say 99% draftees make the roster or at least practice squad year 1.

I'm sure you didn't miss anything that happens here, since you average 18.6 posts per day.

To underscore the awesomeness of this number: Beej, who is the undisputed post count champion at 28,000, posts just 8.7 times per day (about the same as me), and BOR, OP of this thread and esteemed (although MEDIOCRE) high-profile poster posts a whopping 3.25 posts per day.

Heh, BOR posts about 20% as often as you. And yet BOR posts are far more memorable, and your ---- is just stale retartness.

So, did I miss something, or are you just another dumbass who needs to pursue other interests?

Why are you so butt hurt? I thought long vacations cured butt hurt.

If it doesn't he can come back to school, finish his degree, then find a job.

Credit earned is good for 10 years, so if he enrolled in Fall 2009 he has until Summer 2019 to finish his credit. If he doesn't finish this semester he's theoretically 3 semesters from graduating. So realistically he has until May 2018 before he would have to apply for re-enrollment (which won't be a problem if he's in good academic standing).

I think Hill is the first "pure" CPJ recruit to leave for the NFL. By "pure" I mean he wasn't a transfer and there weren't any kind of recruited-by-Gailey-but-signed-under-CPJ issues.

Even if drafted he has to make the team to collect. That is the big risk. Of course, I assume he is assuming he is good enough to make a team.

A 4th round pick doesn't even get $200,000, much less a couple of million. Furthermore, all NFL contracts are not guaranteed. He's probably looking at a minimal signing bonus at most.

This link shows that rookie salaries for later round guys are four years and are for:

Yr 1: $375K
Yr 2: $465K
Yr 3: $630K
Yr 4: $730K

The signing bonus would be $50K-ish. Dwyer got a $78K signing bonus.

Wow, what changed?

I have not followed closely but it seemed years ago lots of lower round picks got cut every year. Some high round picks should have been cut based on how they performed (remember Aundray Bruce) but they are more reluctant to give up on them.

He can be replaced; but I still hate watching people drop opportunities; in this case the opportunity to get a degree to fall back on if football doesn't work out. I justify my financial support of GTAA to myself in part because it provides an opportunity for kids to get a degree and enrich their lives that otherwise might not otherwise have that opportunity.

If football doesn't work out, he can come back and finish school.

On his own dime.

According to Mover, who says about 99% of drafted guys make the team, and the rookie salary numbers I pulled up, he'll have about $375K - $425K to pay his $10K in tuition, if he gets drafted.

If he doesn't, he has to come up with $10K himself. Call me crazy, but I think I'll take the chance to get drafted.

Depends on how far back you're looking. There are lost fewer rounds than their once were. I would say though that 99% seems pretty high when you consider 5th and 6th round guys.

He's probably looking at more than $10,000. If he's on track to graduate, he's 3 semesters off. In-state that's $30,000 and out-of-state (lets say he gets drafted and moves) that's about $45,000.

But I agree that really isn't much if he has a high probability at a $400k salary.

You have only 7 rounds now I think so that's 7 to 9 picks depending on if teams have multiple picks. Not sure what signing bonues are these days or if it makes a difference but the pool of players is much better now than it was with 12 rounds when I came out. 99% might be high so I will say 92%.
