Willie Taggart Ded

Lane is leading his division this year... him with FSU’s talent and a decent defense would be strong

To me the surprising thing was that Taggart lasted this long ...

What advantages?

The talent in florida is mostly south of I4. Why is getting those kids up to tally easier than Tenn raiding Atlanta?

Tenn at least still has a state full of people wearing orange. There is probably more FSU clothing being worn proudly in the Haitian tent cities than in the state of Florida right now. Have you seen FSU attendance? Bandwagon city, no?

Florida State has a had huge recruiting base. North Florida has pockets of great football. UT-k has to beg kids from out of state to buy into the "dream" of playing for Tennessee. FSU has finished top 10 in recruting rankings

2019: FSU 18 - UT-k 12
2018: FSU 10 - UT-k 20
2017: FSU 5 - UT-k 15
2016: FSU 2 - UT-k 15

2010: FSU 10 - UT-k 9
2009: FSU 7 - UT-k 10
2008: FSU 9 - UT-k 35

See a pattern?

Even zombie Bowden was putting together top 10 classes.

And lots of rippin and tearing around Tallahassee.

True story: I got fired from a client in Tallahassee after I let out a Tallanasty Freudian slip at dinner with the clients.

Given those recruiting rankings, it's pretty amazing how bad these teams have been. Taggart's 2018 team that broke the 36 year bowl streak was composed ALMOST ENTIRELY OF TOP 5 RECRUITING CLASSES. In fact, Florida State's recruiting classes were ranked above Clemson's every year during that stretch.

And yet their OL was incredibly subpar. That writing was on the wall before Taggart was even interviewed.

The only numbers that matter on that chart are 10 and 18, unless you think they have another Jimbo Fisher incoming. 10 and 18 are remarkably similar to the Tennessee dumpster fire's 20 and 12.

We shall see. We shall see.

FSU also kills it with south GA kids.

I think this will swing hard the other way. I think they will want a coach with legitimate head coaching success and will shy away from the intangible bullshit. Elliot wasn't even really a candidate for us. I doubt FSU wants to hire a "lets see if this guy can be a head coach" hire after their last disaster. If they get this one wrong, they will be in a world of hurt that could send the program into a death spiral.
If they can afford it...

USC will probably jump in the market soon.

I'd love for it to happen but I don't think Captain Insano is going anywhere.
Nope, I think he's pretty happy at Clemson. One of his sons is a R-Fr, and the other is a HS senior who will be at Clemson next year. He's pretty tied down there.

and apparently also a $8 million buyout

AD’s that listen to hysterical fan bases to fire coaches quickly destroy programs on the field. Those that do not listen to those fans destroy attendance and giving. Taggart has now been fired at an incredibly high cost without anyone knowing what his team would have looked like in years 4, 5, and 6. In year 6 your fifth year players are ones you signed afeter at least one year of recruiting them. Year 6 is when you really know what you have.

If I were an AD I would offer a six year contract. I would resist extensions due to the success of the coach in the early years when the coach is playing athletes recruited by the past regime. But, I would work in significant bonuses to the head coach and staff for early successes to keep them happy. Early buyouts would be expensive both ways.

Then, I would stand my ground and give every coach we bring in time to get the program built their way. In the long run, this would be the best way to build long term success. If poor performance merits firing in the middle of a second season, it would be interesting to list some of the coaches who would have been canned. I know at Tech it would have meant firing Bobby Ross.

I agree with everything above, except all those words that you used and the opinion they stated. in a normal situation with a proven leader, maybe they ring true. Not with WW.

Six years of sticking w/Wee Willie would be the certain way to get yourself fired as the AD in year three. There was no upside to keeping him. None. Wee Willie wasn't Bobby Ross. He's not even close to CGC, and the verdict is still out on that one. No energy, no upside, no scheme, no buy in...nothing.

Whoever said bring in Wake's coach has the right idea. Someone who's run a longtime program in a difficult environment and has done well. You hire someone with little history, you takes your chances. In this case, you lose. (and know I predicted this at hiring 1.5 yrs ago, not yesterday).

mooch, out.
