2020 Recruiting

Certainly we had at least 3 top 250 recruits in the 2007 class??

Don't think he was around then. And I think it would have been at least 4 (Burnett, Dwyer, Nesbitt, Morgan). Probably Jason Peters. Probably Steven Threet and DJ Donley though they transferred, and probably Nick Claytor though his career sank to the bottom of the aquarium.

We had 7 in the top 250.

Derrick Morgan and Morgan Burnett were both top 100 on Rivals. Dwyer was 115. Threet was 170. Nesbitt was 172. Claytor was 203. Jason Peters was 219.

I’d have him 6.0/50. His senior film is absurd. There’s a reason OSU/Bama/uga - who have produced about a 3rd of the current starting RBs in the NFL - are all after him.

He lost points because he's committed to us. Duh.

yeah he enrolled early and competed in the spring and probably won the job. but he was recruited by Pat Nix and Nix left for Miami about the same time Threet started school so he transferred in July.

If my memory serves me, he left because of a girlfriend?

I would say that's why Collins in on him so hard right now (visited his home, then again at school). Really would like to see that, but past indications were that he intended to wait until February.

The only reason to sign early is if you think you'll lose your spot. He won't lose his spot.

That's not the only reason. 100% commitment to attend a certain school is another reason.
I hate to argue against our interests, but waiting gives flexibility. An incalculable number of things could happen between December and February.

Flexibility is irrelevant if you're 100% committed to do something, would you not agree? If some extreme circumstance were to occur that would change that 100% level of commitment, then I'm certain Tech and/or the NCAA would release players from their LOI. This is a silly argument.

Gibbs seems to be going about this very rationally with a solid list of criteria. He doesn't seem to have made an emotional connection with any one school. Sounds like his closest emotional connection to a recruiter is CTC and his adopted brother coming here is another pro for us. Proximity to his home is another. But it is obvious that Alabama and Ohio State have a few advantages over us from a football perspective.

We all love GT but that's just not reality for most prospects. Kudos to Gibbs for taking a measured approach, even if selfishly I wish he wouldn't. I personally still think he ends up on the Flats.

Not really, because there’s nothing to lose by waiting as long as they’ll hold your spot.

Look at it another way: let’s say you’re 100% committed to buying season tickets and you know your seats are being held. Would you rather pay in December or February?

This makes sense unless you want to graduate early and benefit from Spring practice.

If you are hotshot five star you shouldn’t sign a NLI. You should just sign the financial aid agreements with whatever schools want you. That way you have a reserved spot but you aren’t locked in.

Thats how you get locked out on signing day. Most schools are going to fill their class then. And they cant "make room" after NLI's are signed.

Early signing makes sense for most recruits, which is why most do it. In select cases, waiting might be a good idea.

I think his point is that if you’re a 5* they aren’t going to fill your spot. Can always get a transfer, reward a gray shirt, or promote a walk on later. And of course you can make room after the fact. What do you think Bama has been doing for the last 60 years.

If we were in the final 3 for a 5* DT you think we’d fill his spot and tell him “sorry, all full” on NSD? If he waited until March you think we say “sorry, too late.” No. We’d say “right this way and wave to the senior who just decided to transfer.”

The only thing that could happen is a team gets nervous and grabs another player from your position and now you are splitting reps one more way in practice and the team is less balanced.

I dont expect that to apply here, but what if a bigtime transfer (perhaps originally from the 404) hits the portal?
