We're not going to have a passing game this year

Tevin's completions. Only 4 or so were down field if I recall correctly. The rest were along or behind the line of scrimmage.

Washington passed to S. Hill to the right for 4 yards
Washington passed to T. Melton to the left for 2 yards
Washington passed to S. Hill to the right for 2 yards
Washington passed to R. Jones to the left for 1 yards
Washington passed to Peeples to the left for 58 yards
Washington passed to S. Hill to the right for 31 yards
Washington passed to T. Melton to the left for 4 yards
Washington passed to Melton to the left for 13 yards
Washington passed to R. Jones to the left for 9 yards
Washington passed to P. Lyons to the left for 2 yards
Washington passed to P. Lyons to the right for 6 yards
Not trying to start an argument, but isnt that what oregon does? Spread the field and throw short passes to their freakishly fast players and let them do the work, and then later maybe hit some deep balls.

Yes.

Wait wait wait.

WE HAVE A SHORT PASSING GAME!

Let's just clone Denard Robinson 5 times and build an offense around that, maybe then some people's highly unrealistic expectations of our team will be met.

9.1 YPA is better than the Patriots.

We only threw 15 passes and the two long completions skewed the average. If you want to take it further, we average 11.1 YPA for the season. Does that mean we have a better passing game than the Pats?

:bowrofl:

But 1 to 4 yard completions wasn't exactly what we envisioned in a short passing game.

No we envisioned a few broken tackles among those short completions and the result would be the same as a long completion given they were one on one.

There is no difference in those ratios to classic spread offenses. They just do it 3X to 4X what we did in a game and eventually break some for a few exrta yards.

P.S.
I saw a comparison of ND QB Tommy Rees to Joe Montana and Joe Theisman at the same point in their career. Rees had about twice the TDs and about half the interceptions with a lot less yards than the two quintessential ND QBs. But the announcers made the point they played in a different system. Many of those extra TDs were short throws that would be runs in the days of Montana and Theisman. (It kinda fell flat because even the announcers knew the comparison was crap.)

I don't know if our passing game is going to suck or not but I think I know this much. If we use the passing game to cover up shortcomings in the running game then I can assure you that our passing game will suck. Our passing game is predicated on and wholly dependent on success in rushing the football.

So this idea that we can develop a passing game independent of being set up by the running game is a non-starter as long as CPJ is the coach. CPJ uses the passing game to 'punish' defenses who cheat up on the run. If the running game isn't working, our offense isn't geared to switch to a 'passing offense.'

So if you want to fix the passing game, fix the running game because, in our offense, without the running game there is no passing game. Compare the first six games of the season and the last six. The arial attack was working because the ground attack was working. In the 3O, the Air Force only shows up when you don't need them and just inflicts more damage when the battle is basically already won.

If our int/TD ratio was better, yeah it would.

I just don't get it. Everyone bitches about lack of a short passing game, and then when we incorporate a short passing game they bitch about the passes being too short. I guess some people just like to bitch.

Those people don't really know what they want. They just want to complain about something.

Agree with you we always said back in the day when we were young and fulll of it that if you could stop the run you would win and if you wanted to pass you........must be able to pass.worked when I was on sidelines forty years ago and works today in my humble opinion.

This. We even ran some shotgun too. There are plenty of teams with a lot of tradition that didn't even play in a bowl game, so we do have that going for us. It is just a game, don't get why people are so obsessed over it. SOOOO many more important things in life.

Agree and disagree.

IF they are cheating to stop the run then you had BETTER be able and willing to punish them with passing OR the running game will not work. Passing is not totally independent on running. Ability and willingness to pass affects the run.

IOW, sometimes passing is the only way to "fix the running game."
