He should have been our replacement for CPJ if it weren't that TStan was so adamant about leaving the 3O. Monken is more than just 3O. Their game winning drive had the QB in shotgun and they looked pretty good too. I hope Tech considers him when the job comes open soon. Could have won the ACC this year with a coach like Monken instead it was the #win21 joke.
Good grief…. How many recruiting classes of players that belong in FCS do we have to put together until you people realize no good players wants by part of the 3/0—especially defensive players.

Monken doesn't have to recruit at Army. And neither Army or Monken would win 5 games even in a weak conference like the ACC.

There are coaches that can win more games than Collins at GT. But Monken is not one of them. His recruiting classes would look a lot like Army, which can’t win in P5.

Can’t sign 70 people at GT

Wow, you actually think the service academies don't recruit. There is zero reason to think that any coach at a service academy would have the same classes if they were at any P5 school, that has to be one of the dumbest takes in this thread, congrats.

I started to post that things started going sideways when all of CPJ's assistants headed out for more responsibility.

Pretty sure that was accurate.

He actually said service academies " don't have to recruit ". Big difference.

And he's 100% correct.

Also, in addition to service academies basically recruiting themselves, there are also plenty of P5 athletes who, due to military size restrictions, cannot play for a service academy and thus a coach doesn't have to waste time recruiting them.

In short, Monken's recruiting is easier now than it would be at a P5 school, which until last night, he hadn't defeated since 2017.

Probably a combination of that and the hiring of Mike Bobinski.

It still comes down to this, and it always has and always will (at least in modern big boy football):

1. Do you want to do what everyone else does (recruit AT BEST top 30 talent, and maybe worse) and have a chance to win up to about 7-8 games per year, with down years being 4-6 wins. (of course under a terrible HC, that might be 2-3 wins)

2. OR, do you want to do what no one else is willing to do (remember, we are a STEM school in a very dense, urban environment) to have a chance at 10+ wins and finish top 10 occasionally, with down years of maybe 4-6 wins.

I think a lot of you like option 1 above if you don't have to watch any option football. Today's college football landscape is not 1990, not even 2010, it is different, and we are different. But, ok, let's conform for a chance at 8 wins and probably never beating UGAG again.

Are you trying to double down on stupid? Yes they recruit the student body; but they also recruit kids out of high school. This is a dumb take thinking they only pull from the student body.

You are right, CPJ always turned in the #130 recruiting class and never recruited anyone above a 2 star, and lost every single game because our players were so incredibly bad.

Let us know when you decide to start dabbling in reality again.

The triple option or whatever it’s latest form is will not come back to GT. It’s time to move on. I admire CPJ for what he did here but watching Army come back to win against a 6 win Mizzou team is not the future of GT football no matter how bad this season was.

I found this interesting tidbit too, I didn't know the service academy guys could hit the portal:

  • According to Bill Wagner at the Capital Gazette, Navy wide receivers Devin Matthews and Tyshawn Buckner, and cornerback David Miller, have entered the transfer portal. Matthews caught three passes this past season and started twice.

They can do that BEFORE they make their final commitment to the service after their junior year. My late son was at the USAFA, so that is how I know.

Look at Paul Johnson’s last 2 seasons. There’s a reason he “retired” Genius.

Well it’s a stupid question with no definitive answer

How can you answer a hypothetical question?
It's an opinion question, you answer it with a yes or no as has already been explained. Pretty embarrassing that you struggle so much with this tbh, an 8 year old can understand the concept.

Army doesn’t have a single player on their roster over 300 lbs. If you think they recruit the kind of players to win The ACC I feel sorry you. I hope you have a financial fiduciary.

Look at Paul Johnson’s last 2 seasons. There’s a reason he “retired” Genius.

The reason is that he was being slowly starved for support $$ needed to improve recruiting and other aspects of the program. He saw that the donors were trying to let him know without being up front about it - it is called passive aggressive tactics.

I am in no way saying that CPJ was ever going to recruit at a top 30 level - he was not. But, he did not need to if he could get the right players he needed. Some of that would have required a more national approach to recruiting, which cost money and requires more people.
