Checking in from the cold Jersey Shore to take my dislikes, big cries, and poos. I've made the decision to not renew. TL;DR version - I'm out.
I bought season tickets when CGC was hired to support the transition -- while I loved CPJ, this was truly a big turnaround and I wanted to support it during those initial tough years. I'm on the record here insisting our support was important - tickets and financially. I was able to make it back to Atlanta for one game a year with my son, and friends/family in the area were able to enjoy (?) the other tickets.
We're 3 years in, and I've got to be honest about it. It's not worth my time or frustration anymore. Let's call it an attempt at apathy... I want to care less. I'm trying to stay away from Georgia Tech sports in general, especially football. I'll be intentionally playing less early morning golf on Saturdays so I can get back to the TV and watch the game this fall -- more time on the golf course with my family for me on Saturday afternoons, no doubt.
I've watched enough football to see that we haven't turned any corner, and in many ways (not all) we've regressed. X's and O's are a complete disaster, and there's no recruiting and retention magic to overcome it. I've managed enough companies to see, even from the outside, that the program is mismanaged. Again, I'm no insider, and I'm sure some of that has to do with the college arms race and the resources needed to compete -- which our alumni and the academic school has simply refused to pony up.
Basketball isn't really any different.... Pastner seems like a great guy, really. But our team looks poorly coached out there. And the talent level is light years behind the top 20 programs. Want to blame it on losing Wright and Alvarado? In that case, losing in Round 1 of the NCAAs to Loyola-Chicago in an 8-9 game by 11 points in your only tournament appearance under this coach should be an abomination (it was).
Yeah, I know by pulling my ticket support, I'm joining the ranks of those who never supported the program to begin with. It doesn't feel good at all. But things have to change - our administration has to wake up. And unfortunately I don't believe it will get better until things get much, much worse. As an alum located 900 miles away, given the state of our programs, my day to day life will improve by me being less invested. I'm sure I'll be unsuccessful (example 1: last night's basketball game).
But above however I think and feel about it, here's the rational conclusion I've come to: if I owe Georgia Tech sports my support because I'm an alum, then the Georgia Institute of Technology owes Georgia Tech sports the entirety of its needed budget to compete with the best athletic programs in the country. Don't point your fingers at the alumni/fan base while you sit on your $2 billion endowment. Do you know what legacy and national brand recognition that this school owes to its football team? It's a legacy and brand that's fading fast. They need to act in a big way.
(Sorry for the long post. The decision to vote with my tickets has been on my mind the last couple of weeks.)
