A Player’s Mom Speaks

lol what? So now it’s the 404ers? You do realize GT is embarking on its 5 losing season the past 7 seasons?
Our strategy was to highlight “Atlanta” more than GT because GT was seen as being not cool I guess. It’s supposed to be bringing fans in. Where are they? We all know the Atlanta sports market, if you’re not winning they are not coming. There’s little loyalty in Atlanta sports. It was a key part of Tsan & CGC’s strategy. It’s floundering & our program is hemorraghing money. To say I’m concerned about the viability of our football program is an understatement and though I can donate thousands to GT yearly, I don’t have the 2 digit or more millions dollars to make a real impact. GT needs thousands of me & we’re becoming unicorns. You need tens of thousands of lower level supporters than me, that base is dwindling. We’re nearly 100% dependent of very large donors right now.

When I’ve got fellow STH’s that have been sitting around me for almost a decade stop showing up, I find out they cancelled their season tickets, when friends of mine do the same I’m wondering who’s replacing them. When the game ended against VT, there were 6 people left in my entire section & 4 of them were my family. My section is depleted & I’m in an area of huge supporters. Half of them if not more are not coming to the BC game.

I’m not sure who’s gonna show up and support the Team other than a few “never die” diehards like myself. I sat thru the Curry years & survived and this character is not gonna run me off either. I’ll still be here when he’s gone. I just don’t like our program being hopeless, Vandy or Dook territory. It will not change under this regime, they don’t have game. Just filled with excuses & they’re letting our players down. That’s where we are.

Dear Mom,

Thank you for your thoughts. But I have to say I doubt your letter is helpful. The reason is simple. The coaches are for the most part not going anywhere so your letter just acknowledges frustration at the player level and that is a killer of recruiting, etc.

Secondly, there are not that many folks complaining for top level coaching changes. There is frustration by many, but of course there is. We are in the middle of one of the Top Three worst won/loss records in school history. Let frustration happen but I wouldn't consider it a major issue at this point.

Lastly, fans are apathetic and it takes years to get to that point. It will also take years to get out of it. From one who lived through 0-11 and 1-10 seasons, it will turn around. If and when we win some games, Tech will start playing at 3:30 to 7:30. Atlanta has repeatedly proven to support the team at a much higher rate during those times. Your fan base is loaded with professionals who want and have many other things they like to do too. That is a good thing. For me, I travel from Baltimore. it's a major commitment to come and I rarely make the noon games. And neither does the rest of Atlanta. This will change.

Thanks for your thoughts. 99.9% of Tech fans love their players. They know the commitment they make to come here. Ignore the Dwag fans and others here that have no life but to attack.

Having said that, Tech alumni are trained to be analytical and review is normal. Don't let it get you down.

Jim

Poor players, getting a free ride through school for playing a game they suck at. Must be terrible to have millions of dollars of facilities invested for your sole benefit and having your school work done for you and graded on an athlete curve. I will set up a big cry fund for athletes to help close the gap for them, funded by a tax on our students and fans who aren't cheering to your standards.

Apparently not always:

That was from October 4th but they have been drawing similar numbers at home all season. No doubt they're still drawing more than us, and it sounds like their student section is doing much better than ours. But GT certainly isn't unique in having attendance drop significantly when back to back losing seasons are posted.

So they are ONLY drawing 60,000, eh?

South Carolina. In a state with Clemson.

Their attendance is off by about 15%. Ours is down probably 40%. And metro ATL has more people in it than the whole state of South Carolina.

Our fans by and large just suck as compared to South Carolina's.

been saying this for a while : HDTV changed things gradually. my first year of season tix, 1998, i had one 26" tube TV. now 3 large screen HDTV's plus a laptop. 4 games at once. but iim a big CFB nut in general.

point is .. makes it tempting to stay home. having said that i think i've missed maybe 3 games since 98'.

when GT is going good .. it's ton of fun to be there. this year, it has not been a ton of fun. to say the very least.

GT fans are generally not experiencing an easy home viewing experience these days.

The smartest thing Tech can do is schedule easier schedules (teams with fans) for a few years, totally remove the stupid club seats and return the East to the bedlam it used to be. We used to have a home field advantage but haven't now in 15 years. Tech and the ACC needs to understand what brings football fans to a college game. No fan noise creates continuing problems...

(As an aside, my Dad had tickets to the Falcons and when it went indoors, the pumped in noise level jumped up. It didn't take him but a couple of years to drop that program. It's happening to us. We need to be more competitive in general (on defense). We need night games into October. We need to bring back the old Grant Field.)

You and many others here are completely missing the point.

The point is not to feel bad for the players or the players' moms. The point is that our poor attendance and the team bashing on social media has a significant impact on recruiting.

If that is your goal, then congratulations. I swear, the lack of common sense amongst the people posting in these team bashing threads is unbelievable. Cause and effect. Study up on it.

Uh, look at his photo, it's a UGAG player. Why even respond?

Look at the attendance of during a 9win 2017 season
Do you mean 2016? So yes I agree but also look at the jump in attendance we had during 2015. I was there so I remember it. You have to have sustained success to build the base. We are missing anywhere from 8-12 thousand sidewalk fans in attendance.

I have no doubt the players parents are concerned. They were part of selecting the school.

One of the security guards at our old neighborhood was a parent of a Temple LB. They loved Collins and their son wanted to switch schools to follow him.

That guy also played BBack for Johnson at GSU. He loved and respected everything CPJ did.

Read the first line of her post
The reason I say this, is fans showed up for CPJ games or at least more than today... And it doesn't seem like it is getting any better anytime soon... I can't wait for her to call out Coach Collins.... It is coming not sure when, but she will soon realize he is a used car salesman. The reality is that the Georgia Tech fanbase lived through the Bill Lewis era... The Coach Collins era is very similar and the fans at GT are pretty smart maybe to smart...It’s pretty clear where this is headed, at this point. GT plays in the ACC, we should be able to go 4-4 every year in the coastal...2-2 in OOC... From here, here’s what most fans expect will happen: the team will play out this season, and will probably win 3-4 games, similar to recent years. After 3 years, Geoff Collins will fire at least one (if not both) of his coordinators, finally making changes to the staff that remains intact from when they were originally hired almost 3 full years ago, and some will say we need to give his program a second chance with the new coaching staff. Next year, there will be some sort of offseason slogan on shirts and hats like “W.I.N.B.A.T.T.” (which, of course, stands for “W.I.N., But Actually This Time”), we’ll hear about how great the new schemes are looking and how everyone’s getting better every single day, and we’ll talk about expectations that the team will be able to win 7-8 games. They won’t, and instead will go about 5-7 with at least one downright head-scratching loss. Geoff Collins will be relieved of his duties as Georgia Tech’s head coach, and we’ll start the process all over again, hopefully with some improved on-field results.

Fans will not comeback anytime soon...Its a Dumpster Fire! I think a Coaching change might bring them back, but it will have to be "Bobby Ross" or "Paul Johnson" type of hire until then most fans will stay away.

If I recall, that was their QB or a kicker or something right before getting crushed by a defender.

Here's the full image:
