A Talk with Campus Leaders

Not entirely happy with this - it seems like it is 100% a football / basketball major - but whatever. I would disagree with the assertion that VPI's stature went anywhere as soon as Beamer started winning.

Are they changing HTS or are they creating a completely new major? Some of the HTS professors are actually really good, and I am not sure if they would take kindly to this.

SST will be a new program within HTS.

From the link:
"Why does "sport" matter in society today? What valuable and /or detrimental roles do sports play in the life of individuals, cities, and nations? What policies promote or hinder sports and wellness in communities? What key questions does sports studies need to address in order to remain relevant in changing times?"

OK, that takes care of the first 1-hour credit course. I wonder what else they'll do for the rest of the 4 years?

again thats the problem. We aren't MIT. We are GT. We strike a balance between ultra dork scientists and a school that competes in football. Our history is practical engineers, and we produce a ton that can walk and chew gum at the same time. Hence why they are CEOs and MIT is in NASA.

Any analogy to MIT is a total fail by our leaders. Stanford is an ok analogy with a school that doesn't require calculus but still can have rigor.

for some reason rigor to GT is the presence of calculus and THAT IS DUMB and the root problem. You can have a great degree, with good rigor and not require calculus or other courses that turn off many, not just SA.
PERXACTLY, well said!
We are at a cross roads. If we are going to try to emulate MIT, we may as weill go to Div 3 now and stop being body slammed. I am still sore. We need a public statement from the Hill which way we are going. It's the least they owe us.

Edit: I should read to the end of the thread.

Yes. Seriously. If Survey of Calc isn't Calc, then don't call it Calculus!

Can we change the name of it to something less frightening like "Survey of Math"?

Sort of like how U(sic)GA changed "Introduction to Chemistry" to "Smoke weed all day while carrying an unlicensed gun and flipping off people on Twitter using a mirror"?

"I asked if we could defer calculus to the sophomore for that major and from their reaction, it was clear that this had been discussed. (Thanks Cracker.) The answer was no, because they don't want to dilute the academic rigor of GT. There was scattered applause throughout the crowd."

What a stupid phucking answer! What does calculus have to do with this major, other than make it superficially hard for students which will have no need for it after graduation? Div 3 here we come, with nerds like this in control. It is really sad for me to see this road we are on.

:bigcry:

I honestly can't figure out why students need to take calculus in their first 30 credit hours. If the classes you are taking do not have it as a prerequisite why not let them take it on their own time?

But no go ahead, keep making PB&J comments

Also, I highly doubt that "History, Sports and Technology" is a real thing

Those guys are a lot darker than Yobama...

This is great news by the way. We will load up sections of this class with athletes and have a very friendly professor! And Dr Bras won't even be the wiser.

See where the problem is? The school does something, however big or small it may be. Both sides hate it.he "nerds" and the "Georgia fans" (what I was called) don't want to compromise. For Allen :bigcry:

For Bogey. :bigcry:

I like the idea of the new major. It shouldn't require Calculus, IMO. Comparing us to MIT is missing the boat. We aren't MIT.

This is an internet representation of my penis:

8====D

You may place your mouth on it and suck it.

We just started up a program "tailored to athletes." That's bullshit.

It's standard Internet knowledge that a = is an inch. So congrats on your 4 inch penis.

after reading cyp's comment, i think a sport psychology track in the psychology school would be very interesting and could work with the Homer Rice Total Person center in doing things like visualization and mental preparation

Psychology is in CoS. CoS requires all majors (including biology and psychology) to take MATH 1501/1502, the engineering calculus sequence. I suspect that most/all sports psychology programs are in departments with more of a clinical/counseling focus than the GT School of Psychology.

It is to someone negatively recruiting against GT. Can we change the name of it to something less frightening like "Survey of Math"?

It's still a calculus course. I think the name is a bit odd, as the course would be called "Business Calculus" or "Calculus for Management and Social Sciences" elsewhere. A lot of times transfer credit is evaluated on little more than the course title, so the title has to give some sort of reflection of the content.

I honestly can't figure out why students need to take calculus in their first 30 credit hours. If the classes you are taking do not have it as a prerequisite why not let them take it on their own time?

I suspect part of the motivation is to ensure that they take the class before they've forgotten the math they knew in high school.
