How so?
How would splitting off completely hurt the other conferences?
I think the SEC apologists seem to be missing out on the dynamics here. Is the SEC the SEC without the rest of the BCS teams? In my mind they become a nothing without the 'national' mystique.
Is there an analogy? Does the Champions League need the English teams more than the English teams need the Champions league?
Maybe a very close analogy is EUFA and the World Cup. The World Cup would suffer sure if the Europeans were not included. BUT, nobody would elevate the EUFA champion to world champion, even if there is a very high likelihood they are the best team in the world.
Those high SEC ratings across the country? Gone if that is a different league entirely. Who needs who more? It seems obvious the SEC needs the rest of the BCS teams more than the BCS teams need the SEC.
If the PAC/BIG/ACC play hardball, they can drive concessions from the SEC. The only real counter from the SEC would be to pick off the material teams from those leagues. If the SEC snagged Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, Nebraska, Oregon, USC(w), UCLA, Clemson, and a few others then they are the national champs.
If the PAC/BIG/ACC have a playoff with ND and the rest of the BCS teams, it will be a national competition. In marked contrast with the regional SEC championship.
