ACC ded

The only reason the ACC still exists in its current state is that contract with the long duration. It's functioning as intended.

If the schools wanted to be in the ACC and it was just the television contract that was making people upset, we could renegotiate it. The reason we're not renegotiating is that renegotiating requires voting to dissolve that contract and as soon as that happens a bunch of schools will bolt rather than negotiate a better contract.

What I wonder is why would ESPN agree to renegotiate it? Like how does that go any other way than
ACC: "We want more money for our TV rights"
ESPN: "You're under contract, you have a look-in date in X years, pound sand til then"
What can the ACC do that would make ESPN spontaneously give more money for something they have already signed a contract to have rights to?

Admittedly just pure speculation based on my knowledge of and personal experience with Big X schools. I may have exaggerated a bit but I think we'll have more away fans buying tickets overall in the Big X than in the ACC.

I'm going off of fuzzy memory too, so I'm not trying to beat you up on it. My recollection is that they travel well for bowl games, but there's a lot of reason teams travel for those games. It's during the holidays when people aren't working, it's once a year, and it's a big deal. I don't see people flying regularly to see a random conference game. I think the best we do is pick up big10 fans already in the Atlanta area - there may be plenty, but certainly not enough to outnumber auburn, Alabama, USC, fl alums IMHO.

The only thing would be to dissolve the conference, which may be an out in the contract. Maybe. IDK, the ACC front office has been, and still is, full of dumbasses.

Their legacy accomplishment is locking up all the teams into a ööööty contract. It would be like finding out all your peers earn $200k a year for the same job you get $80k a year for.

This all is starting to sound like a bunch of incessant whining. Is anyone here really going to be like ermegherd we're playing Ohio State and Purdue, that's it, I've had enough, I'm done watching GT football since we can't play NC State anymore.

It's life, öööö changes, roll with it, support the Jackets, maybe don't open the estrogen valves to full flow right out of the gate.

What kills programs isn't whining or ultimatums- it's indifference. If the biggest fans are indifferent about the matchups, why will the casual fans care?

There was an article that came out during the last realignment that focused on the necessity of regional rivals and why ties were a good thing for fan interest. You drive engagement by having fans talking to each other - Isolating them regionally seems like it does the opposite.

Coming from a poster who is usually one of the most logical on here, I am not getting your logic here. Why wouldn’t programs like Clemson and FSU, and others want to go where they get money to compete?

Neither of them may ever be “great” again, but both have large fanbases, state of the art facilities, and boosters who will do what it takes to compete. Calling a 50,000 student huge school in a major market “very little” makes no sense. Clemson used to be Tech’s whipping boy, but we have some catching up to do there.
There is simply no way for ACC teams to continue on the current path and expect relevance. Something has to change going forward. I hope GT decision makers buy into that logic.
I appreciate your compliment. Thank you.

Perhaps I’m not thinking about this logically as you have stated. I understand your perspective.
What would you do if you were the GT AD?
I’m a life long GT fan and I’m very worried about where we end up.

Totally agree. And I don’t know where this all goes. Heck, if someone would have told us a few years ago this is where college athletics would be right now, we would have thought they were crazy. The inmates are now running the asylum, and frankly it isn’t even amateur sports any more.
I do know that money rules the day even more that it ever has. Whatever happens, I do hope GT ends up on the right side. It just still pisses me off that while the other leagues were creating an empire, the ACC was playing in the minor leagues

Can I get a 2 sentence summary? I’m not trying to read all that.
ChatGPT bro

Here is the three-sentence summary ChatGPT gave when I asked for a two-sentence summary:
The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) faced the possibility of fragmentation in 2011 but managed to stay united through a grant-of-rights agreement signed in 2013. At this year's spring meetings, some ACC members examined their exit options, but the agreement was deemed unbreakable due to the hefty exit fee and forfeiture of broadcast rights. The conference remains intact, and discussions about revenue distribution adjustments and competitiveness incentives are underway, though the concerns and possibility of schools leaving may resurface in the future.

When I said that's not a two-sentence summary it gave me a one-sentence summary.

Do not give these self-appointed ACC big boys their adjusted revenue plan. Stick together. Let them leave if they want and cash their checks as they move on. Nothing would be easier for these smug schools than to stay in the ACC but get closer to an SEC size check without playing against an SEC type schedule, competing against half of a conference who gets CUSA money. That would be the worst outcome imaginable.
It'd be pathetic if we just let the Malevolent 7 do this to us then said, "Aw shucks, we voted no but we lost the vote so what can we do."

I have no idea what is or is not going to kill the program. Whatever comes next could be a great move, or it could be a disaster. We'll see what happens. This was the life changes, roll with it, support the Jackets part of my post. Nothing that is said on here is going to affect that in the slightest. It's going to happen or it is not, in the mean time enjoy the ride as much as possible.

Seems like there are 2 main lines of thought. The one that I subscribe to is that I support and watch GT football because I've been doing it since my grandparents started taking me to games around the age of 4, then I attended Tech and have been basically doing this forever and I still enjoy it. So ultimately I don't really give a crap who we play, I'm there to see Tech. It doesn't mean I want to see us in FCS but if that happens, it happens and I'll still go to games - nothing more I can do to change that so why waste energy on things I can't control that don't affect my livelihood or wellbeing in any significant way. In the end the only option is to hope that the GT leaders act in the best interest of GT football, and they should consider the points you made such as fan engagement and so forth.

The other one seems to be that one's interest in GT football is dependent on who the opponent is. I don't get this at all. If you're just a college football fan, and want to see great matchups, then as it plays out Tech might not be for you (to clarify, I don't mean you specifically). There's always SEC stadiums in a drivable distance, go see the matchups there. I would love to have great matchups and be playing for at least conference championships, those days were awesome, but again that is out of my control and may never happen again, or it might, who knows. None of that is going to change my support of GT football. At this point GT football is the only football I really care about anymore, maybe that is the biggest driver of my viewpoint. I've soured on the NFL and any other college team means nothing to me. Maybe I'm the outlier.

I do get it though, the prospect of things not working out for us is demoralizing especially considering the (albeit sporadic) great times of the past. There are perils with any possible destination, ACC sucks, regional matchups are problematic with the Big 10, we would be a perennial doormat in the SEC etc..., but that's life what are you gonna do.

I appreciate your sincerity and devotion to Tech. I agree in spirit with what you said. But, I would rather see Tech drop sports than to play at anything but the highest level.

The Geoff Collins tenure was really damaging to Tech, even though I think Collins did the best he could and had good intentions. I think the positive side of our present situation is that I believe we now have a good football coach, AD and President who all want Tech football to become a respected and winning program again. Winning will cure everything, including attendance. My goal is for Tech to win six games this year, go to a bowl, reclaim its old traditions, and build from there.

If we do, we can put ourselves in much better shape to succeed in whatever the future brings. Clemson, FSU and Miami are not so great that we shouldn't be competitive with them. There are plenty of teams on our schedule we have a chance to beat. If they start giving extra money to ACC teams that make the football playoffs, I will especially love it when we make it and Clemson, FSU and UNC don't. We need to earn respect in the football world, and I hope we will start doing that this season.

I also have high hopes for our basketball team and our new coach. I think we are about to see encouraging signs from Tech. To Hell With Georgia!

For those who think that Cabrera and Batt aren't doing anything, and that the traditional GT "ostrich" approach continues...I would point your attention to recent coaching searches:
  • Batt's first search (football): Some boosters got word of the Fritz hire, and blew it up by leaking it to the press. Ultimately Batt and Cabrera caved to the politics, and hired Key.
  • Batt's second search (basketball): Batt and Cabrera learned from the first one and applied those lessons. No word of the hire until it was almost (if not already) inked. How many of you heard CDS's name mentioned before it was almost a done deal?
Why am I saying all of this?

While in the past I would have expected GT's AD and Prez to bury their heads in the sand, I'm pretty sure Batt and Cabrera have a vision they're moving towards. And at this point, I would be surprised if they're not already engaged in backchannel conversations outside of the public eye. Just because they're not putting their neck on the chopping block like the so-called "Magnificent 7," doesn't mean that they're not actively securing a contingency.

TL;DR - The fact that we haven't heard anything in the past would've almost always been bad - in this case, I think our AD and President have shown that they can play a good hand of poker, and keep it close to the vest.

Here's hoping that's right.

(Also - in spite of the intended hires blowing up, I personally think Key may be the best thing we've lucked into in a long time. But time will tell.)

FWIW, there are varying stories of how the football search went down. Some inside claim Fritz was never officially offered the job but it was made known that if so, GT would like him to step down and come to work immediately. There is also some debate on whether or not it was a GT booster that leaked false info that he was hired to squash it, or whether it was someone in his camp that leaked it to get Tulane scrambling to offer him more. Either way, yes I do agree and believe our AD and President are going to be more proactive than the past regime and won't show their hand.

Another thought on this is does espn still get the broadcast rights to Clemson/FSU if they don’t renegotiate the contract that is already in their favor?

Say Bama @ Clemson is the premier sec game of the week. But CBS can’t grab that game, even though they have first pick of SEC games. That would be a pretty good deal for espn. Paying acc rates for sec matchups.
After this year there is no more SEC on CBS. ESPN has the rights starting in 2024.

The most likely BIG10 schools, in order, are:
1) Miami
2) GT
3) Pitt
4) BC
Of course, this is just my opinion.
