Clearly folks outside of Atlanta have seen GT go to 20 some straight bowls between the O'Leary, Gailey, Johnson years.... I agree GT propbably isn't the hardest job in America..... Now if the Question said to turn the team into a 9 & 10 win team every season...GT is very hard... getting to 6 or 7 wins and a bowl....wasn't hard until we hired Coach Collins.... Then it became extermely hard!
No, not the case IMO
Most of GT's difficulties WRT our FB Program are self inflicted, and or result from poor decisions by our Leadership Team that governs Athletics, specifically FB.
To every outsider, GT should be a somewhat easy job due to moderate expectations of the Fans combined with ridiculous amounts of in-State HS FB Talent with the skillz to become future NFL Players.
The other 129 FBS Level Colleges would love to be physically located exactly where GT sits , right smack in the middle of all that Talent.
Given the brand of FB Played in the ACC combined with the nearby Talent, GT should avg 9-10 wins per year and make a run at the CFP every 5-6 years.
For those with short memories, these are the self inflicted issues that we have foisted upon ourselves (we're GT , we can do that):
We chose to leave the SEC.
We chose to hire an inexperienced AD, that allowed our Facilities to deteriorate to among the worst in the Deep South (this was done by the same Guy that took us out the SEC.
We chose to not take GOL back, if I'm the AD and things go sideways at ND like they did, I take GOL back in a NY Second and say it was an Administrative error that left the erroneous Info on his Bio. (but then again coming off a MNC we chose to give our starting RB a 1 year Rip over selling back Textbooks that should've been recycled to the GTAA), while any other College that plays P5 FB would've given him a 1 game "timeout" vs a Cupcake directional school. (once again we're GT, we can do that)
We chose to fire Chan too early, IMO Chan was a great coach by GT Standards for this isolated reason, Chan Recruited GT FB into a place where GT FB was strong at 21 out of 22 of the Starting positions, and at the Time we fired him I opine that he had finally solved the last position, QB.
IMO opinion had we stayed with Chan we go on a mini-Run of unmatched FB prosperity, we would have been atrong at all 22 spots, we would have started a track record of sending Guys to the NFL, and our Recruiting would have started to weaken Teams like Auburn, Kentucky, Tennessee, South Carolina, Notre Dame, and the rest of the schools that came to GA and got fat recruiting NFL caliber talent during our 12 year hiatus from the consciousness of local HS Recruits.
We chose to turn down the B1G Ten & their better TV deal, that now means $22 Million less dollars each year, plus far fewer Sellouts for Home FB Games because there are so many huge B1G Ten Alumni groups in Metro Atl, funny thing is some say we stayed for ACC MBB, but now B1G Ten MBB is just as good or better than ACC MBB.
We chose to be the only P5 College to run "that version" of the triple, you know, the version that only throws 6 times per Game, this proved how out of touch our "power brokers behind the scenes" are, in a place surround by great talent, we chose to tie our fortunes to a system that would make it even harder to Recruit Players.
Thinking about all the bad decisions that GT FB, The GTAA, and our behind the scenes Power Brokers have made to negatively impact GT FB, I'm not sure we deserve to be in the SEC or B1G Ten, maybe we deserve to be in the ACC.
To summarize, GT FB should be an easier FB Job than most places, but for the better part of 70 years we have made a series of horrible decisions (aka self inflicted) that have greatly assisted in making the GT FB HC Job much tougher than it should be
