Athlon Preview of Georgia TECH and their 2022 Schedule

deep dive - so will the fans ask the weightlifters to stay on the field this year?
Should have the biggest Weight lifter on the team/ field take on a fan in the stands.... That would get some attention, kinda like the freeze in Truist.....

Wow , truly sad, to be a P5 quality team one would expect to be at least 65.Duke,Kansas,Colo and Vandy were the only P5's ranked below us.
Almost as if a huge anchor has been pulling us down for three years.
Colorado should not be ranked below us. And Duke and Vandy are a wash. Kansas is a train wreck . . . I think we have them bested,

GT is not a "Power" conference sports program in any meaningful sense of the word. We are an insignificant sports program grandfathered into a legacy position in the lowliest P5 conference. If we were starting over and drafting the conferences from scratch . . . Tech would be a MAC level pick. Football; basketball - doesn't matter. In fact, an argument could be made that Tech really belongs back in the Southern Conference in the FCS.

Kansas is actually starting to build a decent program with a very good had coach. I'd rather be in Kansas' position right now compared to ours.

Coach 5 nails it
And yet, we still hear that our recruiting is so much improved. My issue with the coach has absolutely nothing to do with the the 'Biggest Rebuild in EVAR!'. That rebuild is on the offense side of the ball. The problem I have is the regression of the defense. It didn't require a rebuild, even if we were moving to another scheme. By year 3, the defense should be not only better than the two prior years, but beyond anything CPJ put on the field. I saw the issues CPJ had with fielding a consistently strong defense. We've gone backwards from his worst years. How does that happen?

Collins lost the team last year and he'll lose the team again this year. His shtick never even caught on and he's shown he's truly a clown. Whatever you want to put to the outside about yourself, people in the building know.

Collins will very likely be an analyst for someone this time next year, getting paid by GTAA to sit in a cube with a Waffle House cup to break down film. However a real adult will likely have him dress differently and stay out of the weight room.

Do you think a P5 program will pay him to be an analyst?

Maybe my expectations were different than seemingly everyone else on this board but I fully expected years of pain as we transitioned away from the triple option all-in program commitment. I just dont believe there was any miracle man out there who could have taken over suddenly turned over the roster into a winning one within three years. I think it's much harder than that. It just takes time to regain momentum and its why *nobody* would hire Paul Johnson at the FBS level other than the service academies. He was the worst triple option coach we could have hired since he was 100% into running it the way it was run 40 years ago. Even modern triple option coaches have modified the offense to more RPO type standard college offense including the service academies.

Add in the extra challenges to recruiting that NIL has suddenly created and I think GT is in trouble and none of it is related to coach Collins. The only lifeboat out there is the B1G. The SEC would bring us maybe slightly more $$$ but then we wouldn't win more than 2-3 games a year with that schedule. Not fun.
The B1G was the answer. But likely won’t happen. We missed that opportunity 15 years ago. SEC certainly won’t happen. It was never an option.

Collins is a major reason GT is in trouble. If he had done his job and we were a contender for ACC Championships, we might have a chance to get to the B1G. As it stands now, we suck and offer nothing but academic prestige, which unfortunately means zero in CFB these days.

SEC was most definitely an option; but Bobby Dodd nuked that ship and scattered the ashes.

You're kidding, right? Can you point to a single coach we could have brought in that could take over a triple option roster, converted it to a non-triple option offense, and contended for an ACC title with the same schedule? My point has always been yes, we could probably find a better coach than CGC but *nobody* was set up to succeed post-Paul Johnson. Nobody.

I agree, but I also think it compliments PJ's ability to get at least something out of his recruits. PJ's recruiting philosophy never changed at any point in his career. It made him and it also broke him. The best part of the TO in terms of recruiting is that it makes the job easier for you as far as what type of talent you're recruiting. People can argue the lack of talent PJ recruited all day long, but the key is he knew how to use them. CCG knew how to use the recruits CGC got better than CGC knows how to use the talent of his own recruits. I don't care what you're running, triple option or whatever - if you don't know how to use what you got, you're pretty much screwed.

Yeah. A coach dropped into a consensus drastic rebuild situation known to the entire CFB world is a MAJOR reason we can’t get in. :bfd:

Maybe you should be focusing your not-so-subtle hate boner on the reason for a longterm rebuild in the first place. This is the other side of the coin from the 7ish win seasons, three COFH W’s, and two Orange Bowls you worshipped, so if you were happy with the good then your mouth should be shut with the bad. You reap what you sow, and the fact that you think we should be competing for championships by year three is laughable. Sorry, just because the rebuild isn’t meeting your delusional timeline doesn’t shift the blame for it elsewhere.

It’s not my expectations you should be concerned about. It’s Collins failing to meet the expectations of all those fancy recruits that are jumping out of his dumpster fire to the player portal.

They're jumping out of the dumpster fire he was also placed in, and landing on a pile of $$$. And by most accounts we've been seen as a net winner in the portal largely because of addition by subtraction

Tell me more about these accounts. Who have we lost via transfer that’s made our team better?

Maybe some of the incoming transfers will be worth a damn, but I’m skeptical until proven otherwise on the field.

That's the problem, there was no reason not to hire a coach who would run the option while also transitioning to a more spread/passing offense. Monken was likely that guy and many on here can assert that he said if hired at Tech he would work away from option based football. But instead we assembled a staff with no option experience, and even still I feel like when I watched GT even last year they ran a lot of option-based plays. So we run a bad version of the option because we didn't want to run the option? Makes no sense.

You’re living on a different planet or have extremely gold colored glasses on. GT was a complete rebuild for any coach. GT has the worst resources of any school around the state of Georgia. Florida, South Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee you go through any of the bordering states. Yet you truly think this is all about Collins? Wow. You must be stuck in 1990.

Every year we are expected to do well, we suck. When we are picked last, we surprise people. I'm sticking with that. Will be a decent year.
