Belichick to UNC?!

Another hall of famer to send into retirement at the old unc. Don’t yall understand that by the time we play them they will be pushed off the ball so hard, ole Bill will wonder if viagra will ever be useful again?

Because, fair or not, they don't trust Mack Brown with the money based on what they've seen on field. Same thing with CPJ.

Money is not a guaranteed path to success. We see rich programs fail every season, and programs with way more fans and resources than us who are consistently mediocre.

People don't want to give a ton of money to a coach they don't believe can succeed with it, and it's safe to say a lot of people felt that way about Mack Brown at UNC. Certainly a lot of people felt like that about CPJ, who was divisive right from the beginning.

Money used to be spent on locker rooms worthy of a sultan, lazy rivers, and movie theatres to recruit players. Now it can just buy players. I don't think you can use historical patterns to say money isn't a major role in success going forward.

Put another way: if money wasn't a huge contributor to success on the field, why does the NFL have a salary cap?

CFB is about to see huge damage to its brand over the next decade when the same teams keep playing each other in a league of ~12 for the real title shot each year, but with completely different players each year.

In theory, at least, the allure would be the Super Bowl titles, which makes sense given how many players likely go into their collegiate career fully expecting that they are on the path to the NFL, enamored with the stardom only to realize that very few actually do.
Now that college football is a "professional" sport, I'm not sure that getting to the NFL will be the real goal anymore for most players.

Roughly 260 players get drafted in the NFL each year. Your odds of getting drafted are low. If I am a talented college level prospect, my goals and future planning would be significantly different now.

If I can put away a significant amount of money playing college football for 5 or more years, presumably invest it wisely, get out with a decent degree in something I enjoy doing, why wouldn't I choose the location of my college playing career based on:

1) how much money I'm going to get paid now
2) what I want to do when my playing days are over (at the end of college probably)
3) who my coaches are going to be while playing and
4) where best to enjoy the college experience

I think Tech can offer a lot with all of these.

1) pay well
2) offer a wide variety of academic programs and provide an exclusive and prestigious degree brand.
3) it's obvious that the coaching staff, especially Brent Key, is loved by the players. The young men play hard and mirror Coach Key.
4) Atlanta and the Tech campus is a wonderful place for a young man to enjoy himself.

I think Tech measures up very well considering all these factors. And if your goal is to make it to the NFL obviously you can do that too.

I agree, that all makes sense, and the smart guys will do just that - but, these are still 18 year-olds with big dreams and starry eyes and without the life experience to give them the right perspective. I bet there will still be no shortage of delusional guys who think they are a lock for the NFL and don't plan as you laid out - similar to how anytime a group of guys go to a strip club there's always at least one of them that insists they "have a chance".

Why would you be happy to be wrong? That would mean Carolina is good.

Edit I was replying to @GTROY, but didn’t show up
Call me overly-skeptical, but I just don't see this going well. I'm happy to be wrong, but my official prediction is that they'll hover from 4-6 wins during his tenure.

I think we are about to witness the best anecdotal evidence of all time that it's about the Jimmies and Joes.

I think the $20M/year NIL kitty is what was reputedly promised Belichick to close the deal.

Credit to the Heels. Just when you think they couldn't possibly one up themselves, they find a creative new way to do significantly less than everyone else with vastly more resources.

The proud UNC tradition lives on!

$20 million to buy players kind of negates the recruiting deficiency you might expect with Belichick. This could definitely crash and burn, but I won't be surprised if he's successful. They are throwing around a bunch of money.

We need to win the ACC championship next year

UNC with Belichick and Stanford with Andrew Luck are going to be very formidable in 2 to 3 years. very fortunate that FSU ded.

ACC shaping up to be very interesting. College Gameday will want to roll into Chapel Hill next year.

Bullshit. Unless Billichick has 30 year old Tom Brady at QB, UNC will suck as always.

And Stanford will win if the billionaires get involved.

Look at that damn slob
