Bobby Dodd Stadium at Hyundai Field

The first football season on the current site actually took place in 1905, but it wasn’t until 1913 that the stadium got its name. Donor John Grant made a $15,000 gift to improve athletic facilities, and the field was named Hugh Inman Grant Field in honor of John’s deceased son. The field was framed by concrete stands on the west (2,808) and wooden stands on the east (2,496). The wood was replaced by concrete in 1914.
You should have added that the kid was only 10 when he died. I somehow thought he was lost in the war or something. This doesn't sound as bad as that would have been.

At least we did better than Miami

Naming the field doesn't really bother me that much. Like many of you I'm sure, I didn't really know why it was named "Grant Field". Having been educated about it now, I feel even less bothered by it.

The Grant name isn't really going away, it's just being replaced for $70M. History won't change. $70M can help a lot. I'm guessing ole Hugh Inman Grant would be fine with it if it helps Tech football more than 100 years after his contribution.

I don't like corporate naming but the stadium is still Bobby Dodd and that's the most important thing. Let's hope we don't have to sell that.

Oops. Didn't know it was named for the deceased son. Well shucks.

Well, let's keep his name prominent in the Edge building and in the history.

I mean, 100 years is a pretty damn good run. He got his money's worth.

It still sucks to lose a connection to our history. I definitely took pride and pleasure from having such a historic field with a name that went back to the very beginnings of our program, that all the players, coaches, and fans along the way said.

But that's where the sport is today. Out with historic Grant and grass, in with Hyundai and turf.

So question is will BMW still be a sponsor? I enjoyed the BMW blue loto on the sidelines.

But since Genesis is a subbrand will we have the Genesis practice field too? I guess milk it for all its worth

We’re not losing a connection to our history. We’re doing what needs to be done to adapt and source money which is what we desperately need. Tech faithful aren’t gonna forget Grant or Grant Field, and he will still be honored and commemorated. You know what would kill our history is if we become any more irrelevant. Then noone’s gonna give a öööö about Grant or Dodd.

Speaking of the Edge building, maybe we there's another $70M waiting for us for a rename. I mean, it's not like the Edge ever goes there. Pretty sure U2 hasn't even played in Bobby Dodd.

I'll show myself out.

Press release says historical Grant field signage will remain in place. And BMW hasn't been a sponsor for several years now. It's been Lexus for the past 2 IIRC. That branding may be replaced by Genesis now. Could be part of the secondary 15 million sponsorship.

BTW, for those sick about changing the name from Grant field... do you know why it was called Grant field to begin with?

Edit: welp. Thanks coit.
I did. I was going to games long before the stadium was Bobby Dodd Stadium and GT's home was just Grant Field (my first game was '74, I was six). I would read Grant Field history in the programs and media guides, even though I had read it numerous times....as a youngster, I just loved absorbing all things GT.
I understand the need for funds and know we have to hustle or fall further behind. I don't think it is a bad decision; in fact, I would say it's a good decision. You can't pass up 2.75 million a year for a name.
I love GT tradition, so it hurts when it ends/changes. I hate NIL deals, too, but onward and upward I suppose.
Whatever the situation, GO JACKETS and TGWG!

My sources just confirmed that part of the sponsorship deal includes changing the RW to a Hyundai Sonata.

I think Hyundai Field at Bobby Dodd Stadium sounds a lot better than the BDS at HF.

to me the field is the playing surface which is only part of the stadium

but whatevs. That’s what they get for not asking my opinion first.
