There is no way to win an argument over whether or not a bowl game matters - value is dependent on individual preferences. To say a bowl game does not matter indicates a personal disregard for the significance of winning more than you lose as well as for extending the football season into the holidays, getting extra practice, the team getting a trip that hopefully is fun, and watching your team play what is really an exhibition game unless you are one of four in the playoffs.
My personal preferences are that I would rather win 6 or 7 games as opposed to three, that hopefully the team enjoys the bowl experience, and I look forward to seeing that extra game.
My ECU graduates - both kids, their spouses, and the grandsons are happy that after six years with no bowl their Pirates are headed to Annapolis to play BC. Does that game matter to most of America? No. But, we are looking forward to a trip to Maryland for the game along with 8,000 Pirate fans who bought tickets through ECU. And, I will be quite pleased the next time the Jackets are in a bowl. I hope it is next year.
