Bowl Games Do Not Matter

turn your sarcasm detector on.

Regardless, my point stands: There are a ööööton of bowl-game invites and to not get one means you suck.
My bad. It’s hard to distinguish between the sarcasm and the idiots on the board who just don’t have a clue (not referring to you directly in that comment).

So Tech hasn't been to a bowl game under Coach Skinny Pants. So what?

Bowl games do not matter. Only the BCS games matter.

Players check out of bowl games on the regular. Now we have a whole team bailing on one of the "better" bowls (yeah, I know they're using the Wuhan Chinese Flu as an excuse, but please!).

So the fact that Tech hasn't made a worthless bowl game the past three years does not matter. If they never make a bowl game ever again it does not matter. 9-3 matters. 10-2 matters. 6-6 and a worthless bowl game . . . the worthless bowl game does not matter.

Prove me wrong.
Only about 5 bowls really mattered before the cfp

Why are teams cancelling out of bowls? You have 85 players plus walk ons. Play with the players you have. Testing players and coaches who have no symptoms is a waste of resources.

Coaches want the free practices but don’t care about the game itself unless there are contract incentives. In cases like TAMU they’re dodging senior-laden teams where a loss is very realistic

If the school accepts the bid, they should have to play or forfeit bowl eligibility for three years.

There are no COLLEGE football games, sad but true.
I do wonder at what point some enterprising entrepreneurs approach a school like GT and pays a licensing fee and just puts a team on the field representing GT, but has little do do with the school otherwise. We are close to that with major schools like Alabama, Texas, and aTm.

GT signs an agreement for lease of the facilities and a long term deal to run the team and then just steps back and a corporation runs the team, stadium, and GameDay experience. The NCAA, now toothless, realizes the folly of football student athletes, classwork is no longer required, and we become a farm team for the NFL, or teams like Alabama - pretty much what we were with Gibbs.

This is a dumb post. Bowl games may/may not matter, but it does matter when you go 3 years without qualifying for a bowl which simply requires a .500 record

Opting out due to COVID this year is weak. Yes, those tested regularly are showing a high percentage of infection. But, young athletes who are vaccinated at a high rate who test positive are largely asymptomatic.

The “science” behind canceling these games is illogical. In the case of BC-ECU teams have already traveled together to the bowl site and engaged in pre-bowl activities together. Fans were already there or past the period of canceling rooms without penalty. The ECU marching band was already in close quarters on charter buses when they got word the game was canceled and turned around in DC and headed home.

So, we canceled a game when all of the students had already been in close proximity to one another. The game was called off 26 hours before kickoff, where an outdoor game would have been far less problematic than the bus rides and indoor gatherings and shared hotel rooms. The rationale? BC simply said it was pulling out due to depth concerns related to COVID.

The question to be asked is "would any of these teams opted out if they were in the playoffs?"

Absolutely not.

Short term it’s gonna damage the ACC’s ability to negotiate contracts when they come due. If you can’t rely on your competition to show up and play you have a very basic issue that’s hard to overcome unless you put penalties in the contract. This is all about money, nothing else, and in the end there’s going to be a penalty in terms of diminished negotiating leverage.

Basically boils down to "we aren't playing for a Natty so we are taking our ball and going home"
