Bowling!

VT 5-6 4-3, Miami 6-5 2-5, Duke 6-5 3-4 all seem to be projected in a better bowl than Tech. Has the perception of our fan support dropped that low? Duke? Really …. Duke??
miami and Duke were both ranked earlier in season, might be perceived as better teams because of that.

The important thing to remember about bowl projections is that the people doing the projections actually know less than we do about who might go where. It’s page-filling clickbait and nothing more.

How do we know this isn't click bait

ACC Bowl Order of Selections for 2023:

1. College Football Playoff (Rose or Sugar Semifinals)
2. Orange Bowl
In years where the Orange Bowl does not host a CFB Playoff game, the ACC champion (if not in the playoff) will play the highest-ranked team from the SEC, Big Ten, or Notre Dame in this game.

3. Reliaquest - If a Big Ten team plays the ACC in the Orange Bowl, an ACC team will fill

4. The First Tier
Note: Notre Dame is eligible for consideration in the ACC's bowl tie-ins (Including Reliaquest when available)

Pop-Tarts (Has first selection of these three bowl games)
Holiday
Gator

5. Second Tier
Duke's Mayo
Sun
Pinstripe
Military
Fenway

6. Third Tier
The ACC is expected to have a team selected for one of these bowls: Gasparilla, First Responder or Birmingham.

With Nebraska’s loss, the Pinstripe will surely have RU or MD as the B1G team.

Also, I’ve read in a few places that ACC bowls do not have a selection order. I’m no expert, but it seems our high conference finish doesn’t mean anything with respect to bowl game destination. If someone knows something contrary to that, please post.

I’ve been reading what @GTFLETCH has above: after the NY6 bowls (which definitely have an order), it goes to Poptart, then Holiday and Gator with no order. Then it kicks to the 2nd tier (Sun, Pinstripe, Military, Fenway, Mayo) with no order. Then the third tier with no order. When there’s no order, the conference tries to mediate but it’s between the bowl and schools.

Given how much the ACC loves to advocate for us, I’m looking forward to the Birmingham Bowl vs UTSA.

Pretty sure you are right and that is why the predictions vary so much. They can consider record, but they can also base it on geography, avoiding repeat matchups, etc.

Outside of the playoff/NY6, there is no order.

If there is no order within the tiers, then by definition there is no order.

Basically, the first tier bowls can take the bottom 3 ACC teams if they wish.

I’m trying to will the Gator Bowl into existence, but looking at the ACC: 11 teams will likely be bowl eligible.

1. FSU to the playoffs
Then no ACC in the Orange
2. Poptart probably chooses ND
3. Holiday takes Clemson or Louisville
4. Gator takes the other (if I had to guess, Clemson to Gator)

So then you have GT, NCSU, Miami, UNC, Duke, VT, and BC for the 5 tier 2 bowls. Of that group, I would guess GT, NCSU, Miami, UNC are the most attractive. VT might get military or BC could get Fenway based on geography. So I could see:

5. Mayo takes NCSU (geography)
6. Sun takes GT
7. Pinstripe takes Miami
8. Military takes VT
9. Fenway takes UNC

That leaves BC and Duke.
10. Duke to First Responders
11. BC to Gasparilla
