CFP is now as big of a joke as the BCS was

Bama may deserve to be in it but their presence does not hurt uGAs chances at all, and I think it may help them. Clemson is dominant, I want the weakest team possible to play Clemson NYD so they are full strength in case dwags make it to championship. I wish UCF was in.

This was a no-win choice presented the selection committee. If you take the two loss conference champion over one loss Bama you basically make the selection committee an elimination committee - they eliminate one of the P5 champions. To me, this was the right time to go with undefeated UCF and see how they compete.

What would really be nice would be to use four bowls as a quarterfinal of an eight team playoff. Send ACC champ to the Orange, SEC to Sugar, Big 10 and PAC to Rose, and Big 12 to Fiesta. Include highest ranked non P5 team plus two at large - this would be one loss Bama and Wisconsin. Clemson -UCF in the Orange playing the Ohio State- USC Rose Bowl winner in a semi, with UGA-Wisconsin in Sugar paired with Oklahoma-Alabama in Fiesta would be a nice playoff of eight.

Everyone knows that the solution is the 8 team playoff with 5 conference champions and have the committee pick 3 at larges. Everyone's known that solution for a long time now.
I used to think that... but I'm not so sure anymore. I used to feel that way because I thought conf champ were very important. But I'm beginning to see the ridiculousness of having unbalanced inter-division games, and I think it is really wrong to have to beat the same team twice in one season.

So maybe instead of conf champ, our nat'l playoff should be focused on losses — preference to the P5 teams with the fewest losses, and then to the teams with the 'best' losses. That's pretty much how they've been doing it, I think.

The more I think about that, the more I'm OK with it.

Right. Both are outside looking in. I HATE that Bama is in the CFP but looking at it objectively, they really do have a better body of work than USC or tOSU.

Could you lay out your logic on that?

Bama's two toughest games preseason were looking to be FSU and LSU. Both teams were in total turmoil, and both coaches gone before the end of the season. Those victories aren't that impressive. I don't see USC as being any better on paper, but OSU can certainly make the case.

The biggest irony to me is that a team that went 2-1 against playoff teams is not in the playoff.

I don't want an 8 team playoff. There were only 3 teams that deserve a shot this year.

But I have come to realize that the only way GT is making the playoff is winning our League with 3 losses and getting that auto berth. So, yes bring on the 8-team playoff.

Needs to go to 8 teams. All 5 P5 champs, plus 3 at large. Could even guarantee the highest ranked non-P5 conference champ gets in, plus 2 at large.
Why stop there? Just pick the top 8 conference champions. How the hell can you be the best team in the country if you aren't the best team in your conference? That would force Notre Dame to join a conference and it would break up this superconference bullshit that is bad for natural rivalries and creates unfair conference schedules (like us playing Clemson and VT getting BC every year).

We won the league with 2 losses in 2009, and would have won it with 2 losses in 2014 if the Dwags hadn't hurt Smelter. We could totally get into an 8 team playoff if things fell into place for us.

How can you be the best team in your conference if you don't play everyone in your conference?

Why do you think Bama probably deserves it? make the case

11-1. Harder schedule. Better wins. Definitely a better team and in a better conference. Only loss was to really good auburn. Ohio st got shredded by iowa. Should I go on ? Literally the only thing Ohio st has over Bama is the big10 title.

"Best team" and conference winner aren't always the same thing and the former is subjective anyway. You could have a 4 loss conference champion that beats an undefeated team who happened to have one bad game at the worst time. Are they now a better team? No, they are the tournament winner which is what a champion really is with playoff based sports. The flawed concept here is trying to determine a best team.

It would be so much simpler to just have to play your way in via conference titles and if you are a one loss team that sits out because you couldn't get into and then win your conference tournament then too bad. An 11-5 Patriots team sat out of the playoffs one year. I'm pretty sure NC State back in 83 wasn't the best team but they sure as hell were the champions.

If you want playoffs then accept what comes with that as part of any tournament / playoff format. If you want a subjective best team award then go back to the pre BCS days, play independent bowl games and have writers tell us who the best it. I much prefer the on field approach and don't really care who the "best team" is.

Solid post. But I'm simply arguing under the terms the cfp has layed out why Bama was more deserving.

You guys also have to consider how many games are being played. You would have to cut down every teams regular season games down to make room for an eight team playoff

you'd only be lengthening the season by 1 game for 2 teams

Why was ThUGA such a lock, anyway? Look at their schedule. Out of conference, they played two cupcakes at home, got lucky against Notre Dame, and got away with a bunch of cheapshots against us and if the refs were better that's a toss-up. The SEC East is a joke, so none of those games count. They had to do a bunch of trick plays to beat Missisippi State, who sucks. They were destroyed by Auburn and only beat them in the rematch because Auburn's best player got hurt. The Mutts would finish fifth in the ACC at best. Oklahoma by 40.

Better wins? That's a joke, right?
