Collins was the defenses problem

Pitt dropped a lot of balls and committed a lot of penalties. Let's be excited, but hold off on drawing major conclusions (a la turning the corner after UNC last year)
Nobody is saying we are great. But we are acknowledging we were +20 something points tonight because we made field goals, didn’t give up blocked punts, and didn’t have a bunch of stupid ööööing substitution and procedure penalties

Thread title says "defense" - else I agree with you.

This. I’m excited that we won but I’m not ready to jump on the Key bandwagon just yet. But it was nice to watch GT football for the first time in a while and not see us constantly screwing up.

I'm glad they dropped both of those easy pick sixes in the first quarter. This game could get easily been a lot different.

Still, there's no denying that we looked like a different team tonight. That's why we were able to take advantage of the help Pitt gave us. It's not like the other team was playing lights out for all of...I don't even remember how many games Collins lost at this point. 30-ish?

Or they get a pick 6 and them we score 35 unanswered points. Game dynamic would have been entirely different

Maybe. I'd rather not find out if throwing a pick six on the first play actually helps us play a lot better though, so I hope Key works on decision making with Sims this week.

Look, I realize we are still are far from where we want to be as a team, and the O-line is still not at P5 quality. Last night could be the first of several wins or the last win of the year. We will see.

But, we played smart, made few mental errors, and didn't beat ourselves. In the Coastal, sometimes that is all you have to do.

I do think we are going to need to improve our red zone stats greatly to win any close games going forward.

If our team plays with effort and without lots of mental errors like last night the rest of the season, it will be success in my opinion. We all saw the talent (Gibbs, Ivey, Domineck, etc.) that this team lost, and we have very little room for error.

I agree with this, but the biggest difference for me was that the team didn't fold after we committed the roughing the passer that extended Pitt's 1st scoring drive. In previous games under CGC, the team would have "let go of the rope" and lost focus committing more penalties, overrunning gaps, missing coverages etc. This game, none of that happened. No one tried to be a hero (except for Charlie Thomas actually being a hero), and we kept playing and closed out the game. Oh and someone must have told Sims that if he cuts short another 3rd down run close to the sticks that he'd sit because he really impressed me with those types of decisions this game.

I think the DL played better. I think we have two very good linebackers and our DB's seem adequate.

Our FG kicker looked awesome, congrats to him. Our coach took the points frequently. With our OL, good for him.

Our OL and TE is below adequate, however I have to point out that at the end of the game, our OL had worn out Pitt. They could not stop anything, which was quite a surprise to me. Our WR's are just okay but for McCollum, who will likely be bought out next year or go pro.

Also our coach replaced our Right OG until he found one capable of stopping Pitt, so good for him there too.

What was disappointing to me and exactly like GC before was the end of game, time management. We should have kicked the FG and put us up three scores. We should have run out the clock and not even given them time to score at all. Minor details matter and we came very close to blowing a game we have deserved to win. This was awful.

I think the GC bashing is a complete waste of time. Our team played well at UCF and gave away that game. We came very close to giving away the Pitt game too. We have to be the best at small details to compete right now, we need to keep learning.

BUT THE PUNTS WERE KICKED QUICKLY AND NO OBVIOUS BLOCKING PROBLEMS OCCURRED.

Had a very good high school coach tell me once that more games are lost than are won.
I think we took a big step toward not losing games, especially not losing games at the rate we were losing them in the manner we were losing them, i.e., we won't lose them by a mounting number of really stupid decisions and actions.
And no, CGC bashing for the next generation or so is not a waste of time. He just wasted three plus years of every Tech fan's life.

I was thinking the same thing at the time, but in the postgame presser, CBK talked about riding the defense since they were playing so well.

I believe we were responsible for some of that.

Im thinking it’s a healthy mix of

- Collins actively hurting the team with gameday decisions despite usually having better or at least comparable talent.

- Collins not understanding how to handle kickers.

- Team playing hard for Key.

- Pitt having an inflated ranking off of a great team last year (a lot of which is gone).

I’m not ready to bet on this team to go on a run yet. UNC ‘21 scarred me too much for that. But if we do string together some wins it wouldn’t surprise me. We have good talent in the depth chart relative to the rest of our schedule outside of uga. And I’m not usually one for superlatives but it would not surprise me at all if some football engine measuring decisions decided that CGC has been the worst gameday coach in the country the last 3.5 seasons.

Except the FG wouldn't have put us up 3 scores. It would've taken the lead from 12 to 15. If the FG would've taken it to a 3 score game, that decision would've been indefensible.

I agree and was yelling at the TV at the time that we should kick it. The 3rd down QB sneak and 4th down fade pattern were pretty awful calls / were poorly executed.
