CPJ Mad Bro

The arguments above were interesting. So, I looked at our starters from the ‘08 and ‘90 teams. Certainly the talent was comparable. My opinions are no more or less biased than anyone else’s, but I was surprised that if I were putting together a starting lineup from the two rosters, I end up with 16 of 24 from ‘90. Dwyer, Thomas, Gardner and Howard on offense and Morgan, Walker, Clark and Burnett start on defense for me. The specialists and other starters would be from ‘90. I know I am leaving off Michael Johnson at DE, but that is to start Marco Coleman. Both teams had good skill position players and were really good on the defensive line and secondary. The ‘90 linebackers were really good.
I’d take either roster, gladly.

I’m not real sure what we are arguing about now, but I seem to recall most of us were really happy PJ was our coach because “the hill” prevented us from competitively recruiting. As such, we needed to find a competitive edge elsewhere, which PJ did.

I also seem to recall most of us agreeing that, when we changed systems, it was gonna be rough for a while.

The big question we have to answer again is can we competitively recruit with Clemson, Uga, Fsu, Auburn, Bama, Florida, UNC, SC, Tenn and Miami. If we can, then this transition will ultimately work. If we can’t, then we may be back to the Chan years where our ceiling is 7 wins.

Time will tell.

Chan's teams consistently lacked depth.
Are people simply not aware of the scholarship restrictions Gailey coached under? Most (all?) of which were the result of mishandling by the GTAA of student academic records in the transition to semesters.

If the Peach Bowl didn't show you how many holes the 2008 roster had in it that were covered up most of the season with a gimmick scheme; then there is nothing I or anyone else can say that will help you. But to go undefeated in 2008 like was stated that roster would have had to have been as good or better than Urban Meyer's 2008 team that won the championship. That is freaking insane. In 2009 they would have had to beat Nick Saban's 1st National Championship team which is again rediculous. So compare the 2008 and 2009 rosters to their contemporaries if you actually think that makes the argument better; but I get a very strong vibe from our post that weren't old enough in 1990 to remember it and are just parroting what you've been told.

The Peach bowl had little to do with talent and had everything to do with a team that wasn’t mentally prepared.

No one was expecting LSU to even give us a fight, never mind crush Tech before the game began.

A reminder, if anyone needed one. LSU scored a TD in the first drive. After a few punts, Tech took the ball down to the LSU 7 and settled for 3 points. LSU then scored another TD in the second quarter to make it 14-3.

LSU was leading but Tech did not look any worse, just unprepared for the occasion.

And then came a disastrous sequence of events. LSU’s next 3 drives, all of which led to TDs, started at the Tech 21, 24 and 42, thanks to a stupid fake punt, a fumble and a 20 yard punt.

The game told us little about the strength and weaknesses of the Tech football Team and more about the fact that they weren’t mentally prepared for this game.

And, Gailey got Calvin Johnson here, keeping him from going to UGAg and probably winning a natty for them.

Hilarious. It was because we were GT and the ncaa needed someone to beat up on.

glad to hear that. All this time I thought it was because lsu got the blueprint

Let’s be honest. At the current level Bama, UGA, and Clemson are recruiting at no one except OSU (maybe A&M?) will be recruiting with them and no one will be beating them with any regularity.

That wasn’t the biggest problem though. We simply did not have a QB his entire tenure. Every starting QB we had from 1990-2002 had a better rating than any year of Reggie Ball.

I think if you put any of those guys (assuming no rebellion with Luginbill) on the 2006 team they win the ACC and beat Georgia. They probably also win at least 1 extra game per year 03-07.

You are still mis-interpreting. I am talking about the talent on the 1990 team compared to the talent on the 2008 team period. That is all. Not compared to the teams they played at the time, not compared to their contemporaries, not saying they would've had to beat X or Y to go undefeated. I'm saying the talent is comparable. If you take the 2008 roster to 1990 do I think they can win the natty then? Yep. If you bring the 1990 roster to 2008 do I think they can win the natty then? Probably not. I also never said 2008 was the best ever, and I do believe the 1990 roster was better, but you are putting them on a pedestal to where we can't even compare them to other great teams we had? That's what's ridiculous. You've moved the goalposts so many times in this discussion/argument it's hard to keep up anymore.

It is just those schools were aren’t going to recruit with. We aren’t going to be a top 10 fixture. But I think Collins could get us consistently in the 10-20 range IF he can start winning games. That is where VT sat for about 15 years. We can’t get there without winning.

The first 4 years Collins can sell immediate playing time (position dependent). But year 4 is going to need some wins too. My guess is this is put up or shut up season for the coordinators. We can still lose more than we win, we just can’t look inept doing it.

Will we put up an empty trophy case like VT did for our expected Natty's?

Nevermind, we already have 4 Natty's

Sorry I do not agree with your analysis at all. LSU manhandled the 2008 team and simply attacked it and mauled it. We didn't have the talent on the OL to counter punch and they were too physical and fast to be finessed. We saw the same thing happen in the Orange Bowl the following year with the 2009 roster. Both games we were totally dominated physically and no amount of scheme or game planning could have stopped it. The team wasn't mentally prepared to get run over by smash mouth football; but everyone was excited to be the biggest bowl we'd been to in a decade or more. Same with 2009, you can't argue we didn't want to be in the Orange Bowl because the roster Gailey left wasn't physical enough on the lines of scrimmage to compete.

There was no team in 1990 that would have physically mauled the 1990 GT anything like that. Some pundits thought Nebraska would be too big and strong for us and we know how that turned out.

If we recruit 10-20 we can be a top 25 fixture and a semi-regular Coastal winner and occasionally catch Clemson or UGA in a down year, but that’s pretty much every teams ceiling outside of the elite.

Jaybo Shaw. You took the trouble to bold Shaw and left other position groups purposefully blank. So just STOP.
So my response to your criticism of the quality of the 2008 team is I did not highlight enough good players. Okay I didn't. The 2008 team had more talent than I ever imagined.

The 2019 team? Not so much. At least the ones inherited.

In that case CPJ's 2018 team would have destroyed Heisman's undefeated teams. :dunno:

We got mauled up front in 2008/09 because we didn’t have option linemen. I mean, we had a beefed up TE playing on the OL. What was he, 260 lb? I think that was the difference in our two OB performances. Having an OL built for the option.

Unfortunately, those early bowl games showed what a dominant DL can do to an under center team. Once Clem and uga upped their recruiting game, we were looking at two games a season just not being competitive. We weren’t going to recruit linemen big enough to compete with those teams. Because if they OL were big and fast, they weren’t going to play option ball. iiwii
