Mullen was on the ESPN broadcast for VT/NCST last night. Anyone tune in? Personally I don't think he sounded like he was all that interested in being a broadcaster and don't think he was great. I think he wants to coach. I know a lot of people are turned off that he couldn't recruit at UF. But then ignore the magic he did at MSST. From a football standpoint I think GT football is closer to MSST than UF (academically, no they're not comparable obviously). I think at MSST and GT you are trying to recruit a player who is under the shadows, maybe a good 3 star player who would be a 4 star if he played for the right school. And also you're looking for guys you can develop and may not contribute as freshmen or sophomores but will shine as upper classmen.
He did a great job at MSST and I don't think he just suddenly forgot how to coach. There's also the money he is getting from UF that could make him attractive from a budget standpoint. My two cents, maybe Tech could do better but I think Mullen would be a great hire for GT. I was not a fan of the Heupel hire at UT for the same recruiting concerns, but as it turns out I was wrong; being a really good coach is pretty important too and we've tried the recruiter coach, lets go after a coaches coach.
