Dan Mullen

Well I am assuming Todd Grantham on YouTube giving choking signs to Florida players wasn’t a good look when Mullen was kicked out of Gainesville. Mullen failed because he believed in himself and didn’t understand history matters.
No. Mullen believes in himself and has done well and might do well in an interview. My question would be. “How coach, do you then hire a DC for a university that has been on social media taunting a kicker from our university”?

“Well I designed the system that has made Urban successful. I’ve shown how Mississippi St can be ranked in the top five and maybe even number one during the season, (nevermind got the öööö beat out of us by a real coach that was old-school). I went to Florida where they were needing me and the best I could do was hire a ööööhead ex ugag dc that taunted our players only a few years ago. Now he is working at Bama as a defensive assistant with the rest of their 917 coaches. Have I sucked your cock off enough yet”?

His tenure at UF wasn’t as bad as people like to paint it in my opinion. He won about 70% of his games without ever nailing the QB position. Bring him in and give him the tools ($) to nail the DC and recruiting head spot. Then we’re near the top of the ACC by 2025

No, please sell me on the idea.

Hell NO! Dan got lucky with Dak (the same Dak that we waxed in the Orange Bowl), WTH else has he done?

Doubt he would take the job…however unlikely we’ll have a better coach in my lifetime.

You obviously missed the fact that he was trying to get an NFL job during his disaster of a 2021 season. Add in the fact that he kept a horrible DC in Grantham around is also an issue. Mullen had 1 Top 25 recruiting class at MSU. So he is not a proven recruiter. UF just being UF is a guaranteed Top 25 class annually. Ron Zook was an elite recruiter while at UF. Mullen does not like to recruit. That has been well documented by now by UF Mods and recruiting analysts.

So Mullen had 1 Top 25 class at MSU that can take any player without limitations, including JUCO players. The remainder were in the mid 30’s-40’s. The Pirate has been at MSU for 3 classes 26 (2020), 26 (2021), 25 (2022).

So you think going to a school with the academic restrictions of GT, along with the competition for in-state talent by all the major programs in the surrounding states that he will get anything other than the Top 40-50 range annually? I just don’t think he’s a fit for GT’s limitations.
Good counterargument, not sure I want him anymore. Mediocre recruiting won't cut it here. Paul Johnson did about the best you can possibly do with mediocre recruiting--which was pretty good, but I doubt Mullen is some offensive genius.

He's also coached Alex Smith and Tim Tebow. Most coaches would be lucky if they had 1 QB like that. Mullen's had 3. The others weren't half bad.

Do you expe

What tf do you expect we can hire here? The guy has a great resume. He’s young and he has stuff to prove. He did not get lucky with dak he developed dak

Whoever it is, I hope Tech fans get behind the coach. Every new coach our fans split into factions more than any other fan base. The i-knew-better bullshit even though most Tech people are booksmart with the common sense of a doorknob. It’s dumb.

So what makes you think Mullen would be interested in GT? As Mullen said last week on ESPNU “Full Ride” he’s enjoying just doing in-studio work and calling a game or 2. It’s allowed him plenty of time to golf multiple days during the week.

Also, there’s still no report on whether the terms of his buyout from UF indicate whether the payments are voided if he gets back into coaching at another school as an HC before a certain period of time.

The T&Cs are unclear. Yes. However, at Tech he would not have to move. His kids could stay in their current schools and he would have a team and fan base that provides him realistic expectations and a good recruiting soil for him to make them competitive

Mullen dramatically improved recruiting at MSU. Look at the figures for yourself. He didn't make them top 10, but the improvement is clearly there. It looks like exactly the kind of improvement we hope the next coach makes at tech.

On top of that, he's developed some awesome qbs. Sure, Tebow was a 5*, but he turned dak Prescott as a 3* into a pro bowler. If we're worried about recruiting at tech, taking a guy who is proven as a QB developer is the best thing we can do. This is the guy who ran UFs offense under Meyer. He's been to the big stage and has 2 rings for his trouble.

If you want to criticize him, it's that his defense isn't elite. He put his defense in the hands of Collins and Grantham. But pretending he doesn't know how to or want to recruit because he got 2 classes that were just outside of the top 10 at UF is just strange.

This is full of so much exaggeration it’s comical. Here are Sylvester Crooms recruiting classes at MSU per Rivals.com:

2004 - 62
2005 - 33
2006 - 46
2007 - 39
2008 - 44

As previously pointed out, here are Mullen’s recruiting classes at MSU per Rivals.com:

2009 - 25
2010 - 38
2011 - 44
2012 - 30
2013 - 26
2014 - 37
2015 - 16
2016 - 34

So Mullen finished with 2 Top 25 classes, one of which was the transition class he inherited when he was hired post Sylvester Croom in 2009. The other was in 2015. So where is the huge jump in recruiting from Croom to Mullen again?

Joe Morehead who lasted 3 recruiting cycles after Mullen went to UF had 2 Top 25 classes (25, 23). The Pirate has had 3 classes at MSU (26, 26, 25).

Mullen has recruited and coached up Prescott. Tebow was the #1 QB in the country per 1 service, Stafford the other. Tebow went to UF over Alabama due to Urban.

If you look at McElwain vs Mullen, the classes look pretty much the same.

McElwain:
2015 - 23
2016 - 9
2017 - 9

Mullen:
2018 - 17
2019 - 8
2020 - 7

UF recruits itself. Please stop making it into something it’s not. And if you look at the current UF team there are holes all over the place. So Mullen had plenty of misses to that “elite” recruiting you keep trying to point out during his short time in Gainesville.

Both Felipe Franks (transferred to Arky) and Kyle Trask (backup in Tampa) were signed by McElwain. Mullen signed Emory Jones (now at Arizona), Jalon Jones, Anthony Richardson (current QB).

So based on the facts presented, he did a great job with Prescott and Trask. Other than that, not much to show for.

Mullen is a quality coach, but MSU and UF aren’t GT. MSU has no limits when it comes to recruiting and he produced 1 Top 25 class. That’s no different than what Collins did at GT. I seriously doubt Mulllen would do any better than Top 35-45 if he’s hired by GT. I’m not saying he can’t be successful at GT. But he also wants to go to the NFL.
