Mullen dramatically improved recruiting at MSU. Look at the figures for yourself. He didn't make them top 10, but the improvement is clearly there. It looks like exactly the kind of improvement we hope the next coach makes at tech.
On top of that, he's developed some awesome qbs. Sure, Tebow was a 5*, but he turned dak Prescott as a 3* into a pro bowler. If we're worried about recruiting at tech, taking a guy who is proven as a QB developer is the best thing we can do. This is the guy who ran UFs offense under Meyer. He's been to the big stage and has 2 rings for his trouble.
If you want to criticize him, it's that his defense isn't elite. He put his defense in the hands of Collins and Grantham. But pretending he doesn't know how to or want to recruit because he got 2 classes that were just outside of the top 10 at UF is just strange.
This is full of so much exaggeration it’s comical. Here are Sylvester Crooms recruiting classes at MSU per Rivals.com:
2004 - 62
2005 - 33
2006 - 46
2007 - 39
2008 - 44
As previously pointed out, here are Mullen’s recruiting classes at MSU per Rivals.com:
2009 - 25
2010 - 38
2011 - 44
2012 - 30
2013 - 26
2014 - 37
2015 - 16
2016 - 34
So Mullen finished with 2 Top 25 classes, one of which was the transition class he inherited when he was hired post Sylvester Croom in 2009. The other was in 2015. So where is the huge jump in recruiting from Croom to Mullen again?
Joe Morehead who lasted 3 recruiting cycles after Mullen went to UF had 2 Top 25 classes (25, 23). The Pirate has had 3 classes at MSU (26, 26, 25).
Mullen has recruited and coached up Prescott. Tebow was the #1 QB in the country per 1 service, Stafford the other. Tebow went to UF over Alabama due to Urban.
If you look at McElwain vs Mullen, the classes look pretty much the same.
McElwain:
2015 - 23
2016 - 9
2017 - 9
Mullen:
2018 - 17
2019 - 8
2020 - 7
UF recruits itself. Please stop making it into something it’s not. And if you look at the current UF team there are holes all over the place. So Mullen had plenty of misses to that “elite” recruiting you keep trying to point out during his short time in Gainesville.
Both Felipe Franks (transferred to Arky) and Kyle Trask (backup in Tampa) were signed by McElwain. Mullen signed Emory Jones (now at Arizona), Jalon Jones, Anthony Richardson (current QB).
So based on the facts presented, he did a great job with Prescott and Trask. Other than that, not much to show for.
Mullen is a quality coach, but MSU and UF aren’t GT. MSU has no limits when it comes to recruiting and he produced 1 Top 25 class. That’s no different than what Collins did at GT. I seriously doubt Mulllen would do any better than Top 35-45 if he’s hired by GT. I’m not saying he can’t be successful at GT. But he also wants to go to the NFL.
