Defense is an embarrassment

I am just SICK of the arm tackling and the additional 5 yards given after initial contact. Surely this is not what they are coached to do---right??
Arm tackling is an improvement over some crap I saw. On one of Miss’s long runs, one of our defensive backs ran in front of the ball carrier near the 5 or so and tucked his arms to his side as he dove in front of him. Torpedo style. No attempt to wrap up.

Assuming defense doesn't improve this year and Thacker is let go, who does Key hire for DC? Is there an affordable wish list?

Bronco Mendenhall
per wikipedia
"From 1991 to 1993, he was the defensive coordinator for Snow College, a junior college in Ephraim, Utah. From 1993 to 1994, he was the defensive coordinator for Northern Arizona University. From 1995 to 1996, he served as the defensive coordinator for OSU. In 1997, he served as the secondary coach at Louisiana Tech. From 1998 to 2002, he was the defensive coordinator for the University of New Mexico"

Anybody. But it seems to me that without a massive turnaround the whole D staff has to go and do a complete overhaul. The lack of results/improvement is egregious. How can you be playing college defense and not know how to tackle? Is it coaching alone or a combo of coaching deficit and skill/aptitude deficit? Just makes no sense unless you consider that the *******/awful waffle mindset totally ruined a whole generations of players. Then again, in that case we need a major house cleaning. Fumigate the room and start over.

If Bronco Mendenhall is still available, I'd certainly give him a call. But he was available in the off-season, so he may have been one of the ones that were called before. Also, Kevin Sherrer is Asst. DC, IIRC. He might be one to look at as he has a pretty nice resume when last I checked. I suppose it's even possible that is the reason he was brought in. I dunno.

Sherer is an option for a mid-season change.

This thread is the embarrassment. Lots of whiny bitches in here that are expecting the moon regardless of the competition or the state of our program as the clown left it. Yeah I too miss the legit O'Leary and Gailey defenses but here are the current facts:
  • Ole Miss is a top 20 program and contender in the SEC that outspends us for coaches and players
  • Lane Kiffin is one of the best offensive coaches in the college game
  • It was a competitive game through 3 quarters unlike the ass whooping last year
  • We lost a lot of defensive talent from last year that has not been replaced:
    • Keion White - Patriots
    • Charlie Thomas - Browns
    • Ace Eley - Panthers (almost - made it to final cut)
    • Akelo Stone - transfer to Ole Miss
    • Sylvain Yondjouen - injury out for season
    • Zamari Walton - transfer to Ole Miss

I here you and I think Thacker has to go however we do have some pretty good dline recruits and we need them. That could mean keeping some assistants if we would lose those recruits. I somewhat expected front 7 to struggle - lost top 3 of 7. The secondary has been a disappointment. They were suppose to be good and don't tackle and get beat deep, SAD

Great point. I hadn't really considered that. Lessee what the recruits look like but Whacka Thack needs a new job. Summers else.

I'm comparing it to 15 years. As for "getting us burned" that wasn't why we lost an ACC championship 9-6. If we had the QB and offense we have right now with a Tenuta defense from 2004, we'd be kicking opposition ass right now.

Agreed. Reggie Ball was a GT man through and through but he wasn't the most accurate passer. He made C Johnson look 'good' with those circus catches for highlight reels because they were bad passes. I was at the game and it was frustrating we couldn't do ANYTHING on offense with the weapons we had at our disposal.

Also don' forget Jordan Domeneick who was supposed to start for us multiple years who ended up playing for ARK and now starts for Colorado.

Or Jared Ivey. Kind of makes me wonder what the point is to trying to recruit DL from high school. You will get one decent year out of them at most before some rich program swoops in to grab em. If you even get that decent year; didn't Stone get grabbed just for having a really good Spring game?

I think you're right. As I typed earlier, college football now is like the NFL would be with nothing but 1-year contracts.

Yep....unfortunately. He was supposed to have started for us this year. I think Key is trying to get back to emphasizing 'developing' players by really making a full court press in hs recruiting. Still, he's going to have to use the portal to bridge the gap and we need more NIL $ in general to keep good players. Like 78 was saying, this is more like NFL lite. It's sad. It also continues to de-emphasize education....not that the factories were about that anyways. I think it hurts schools like GT more.

Players who have a shot at the nfl tend to stay with coaches. I am not sure Gibbs leaves if Choice had stayed. Transferring to a factory has it’s own risks.

He did say he just wanted to win. That wasn't going to happen, even if CTC had stayed. Not with Clown still in charge.
