Defense is an embarrassment

Techs defense is typically not good. Our lbs and dbs are undersized and can’t tackle because they get overpowered by other teams rbs, wrs and even qbs. I would agree that d line played better under David turner but we did lose several key players from that group. Ole miss was missing like 5 Wr’s plus 2 TE’s which is why they played grind it out(which worked) until we finally started cheating up in 4th and then Lane took advantage by tossing it deep. Why not blitz every down and hope for some tfl’s. Couldn’t be worse than bend and break.

Check the video...how much complaining about the coaching was there last year when we had White, Thomas, and Ely making plays? Not saying Thacker is all that but, please, we severely lack the Joes.
I'll have to disagree.Check the linked composite.
we have a solid number of 4star players - 7 dB's + 2 LB's + 1 DE
Talent is not what is lacking on this defense.............

I know our athletic department has its budgetary restrictions, but we should have cleaned house and brought in a whole new staff. People who know how to coach KNOW how to coach and bring the best out of the personnel they have. I'm just not seeing the results that tell me we have solid coaches.

We'll just have to agree to disagree, as they say. Talent Composite metrics can belie what eye balls see, IMO

We had 19 games with Tenuta as or DC where the opposition scored 10 points or less in 6 years (2002-2007). We have had 17 games since then where we have given up 10 or less, and three of those were in 2008 with Gailey recruited defenders (15 years + some change)

In 2004, we gave up 227 points the entire season. I will take some more of that
JJ, comparing any period to the last 4yrs is a non-starter. You might have to resort to the late 70s/early 80s when we almost quit football. Tenuta was aggressive which is a good thing, but being overly so...not so much. He got us burned, imo, many many times, plus he couldn't/wouldn't recruit. I much preferred Lindsey and GOL as DCs.

Thacker is also responsible for recruiting defensive players. Part of the imbalance is that Faulkner and Weinke have credibility with recruits.

Under PJ, the coaches recruited by geographical area. Which is why Andy McCollum, a defensive coach, got AB Dontae Smith and OL Shaq Mason and Lamar Owens, the slotbacks coach, got CB Step Durham out of Jacksonville.
Faulkner got hired after the national championship game, when most of the 23 recruiting was already in the books. He is credited as being Singleton's primary recruiter, which is weird since Singleton committed while Faulkner still was working at Georgia. And that is Faulkner's only recruit for that class.
Our two highest ranked recruiters for 2024 are Coleman and Thacker. Weinke's two biggest recruits are Dickens, our third string RB, and Philo, our class of 24 QB. So there hasn't been much direct impact from them on recruiting.

I just think the guys we've gotten in the portal on defense haven't been as good or as helpful as the offensive transfers have been.

I was referring more to the transfer recruiting and transfer prevention. In the short term that is more crucial than high school recruiting. Thacker and his staff did not do well in transfer prevention.

Against FBS competition GT defense is:
128th of 133 teams in points per play.
130th of 133 teams in yards per play.

GT defense is indeed an embarrassment right now.

I don't think those stats mean much at this point in the season, considering that most teams have only played 2 FBS opponents, and a lot depends on how good the offenses of those opponents are. Ole Miss and Louisville are not average offenses.

I'm comparing it to 15 years. As for "getting us burned" that wasn't why we lost an ACC championship 9-6. If we had the QB and offense we have right now with a Tenuta defense from 2004, we'd be kicking opposition ass right now.

Yeah, out of the 133 teams that have played 2 FBS opponents, we have performed below 125+ of them. It's only two datapoints, but they are really bad data points considering Louisville is not a great team.
