Duke vs Clemson

We've only had one offseason with the new S&C coach, after three plus years of making great motivational social media sizzle reels but putting out a slower and weaker team.
We didn't lift weights in the pregame before Louisville. Maybe lift weights in pregame?

Congrats to Mike Elko, guy has already proven himself as a very good HC in just 14 games at Duke.

This is my problem. I supported the hire of Key when Fritz fell through. I'm still hoping things start going in the right direction. We have lots of room to improve. But don't tell me our brand is "toughness" and hard nosed football and roll out a product that couldn't tackle me running around out there and gets shoved off the ball consistently on both sides. There was plenty of time to add weight and muscle to this team. Where is it?

The only thing I can assume is we are a ööööing disaster on both lines AND we have D-coordinator that doesn't understand tackling. I was on the fence about Thacker. I honestly don't know why he was retained. The offense is improved and at least gives you some optimism for continued improvement. The ööööing D can't stop anything.

I will add, we were out coached at halftime and the 3rd and 4th. We made no adjustments defensively and were bogged down most of the 2nd half offensively.

Not good.

According to some high up GT boosters that I know, we put some feelers out for some notable DC's before the end of the season to gauge their interest in coming here and none of them expressed any interest so Thacker was retained on a one year "prove it" year.

I have to repeat what I have already said several other times ... the D hasn't tackled in at least 20 years, so don't lay it all on Thacker. Even the D under Tenuta which blitzed mercilessly and successfully most of the time, couldn't tackle.

I really don’t understand what happened to our S&C program. The guy had success elsewhere in the same job.

I think it’s a reach to say that we ignored S&C. It looked like guys were getting bigger. I do wonder if we were taking the wrong approach or focusing on the wrong things, but it’s not like dudes weren’t lifting.

If we were ignoring anything it seems like it was, like, teaching football.

A bunch of "ifs" there.

I'd just wait for CFB to fall apart. The SEC isn't even going to outlast the eventual crumble leading to an NFL style, coast to coast, football only, league of 30 teams. It will mirror the NFL.

We will be left out, which I am fine with.

I'd bet you MAY even get a team like Auburn left out. Miami. NC State......could even see Clemson left out, since UGAg and Tennessee cover the territory. It is gonna hurt. Teams will be abandoned that you might go "huh?". UCLA will have nowhere to go, USC covers the need.

In a blank slate world, you'd not have Auburn, Alabama, and FSU in an NFL style league. GT would be out because Alabama and UGAg cover our area
I hear what you are saying but I don't think this will happen. Saner heads will prevail when it is realized how many fans would be lost by having a league limited to 30 schools. I know if this happens I would quit watching the 30 team division and watch Ga Tech's division. Which quite frankly might be more fun than the way it is set up now with domination at the top. I even think the SEC is now wondering if their taking Texas and Oklahoma was a good long term move given the upheaval that has followed. The SEC and BigI are better off having us hanger ons being around than not.

Yep. Except money drives these guys ape. They'll ultimately do whatever the dollar suggests they do.

This was my main concern from Friday night. Our OL and DL were both smaller (and apparently weaker) than Louisville's and got pushed around pretty good. This after 9 months of talking about building toughness. That was my doubletake from the evening. I think the O will be fine, overall, but will have to contend again with an underperforming OL. The front 4 on the DL left me very concerned.

We’ve got help coming via recruiting. Could’ve used some more transfers along the lines.

We all knew we weren’t gonna have the best DL. At least it looks like we’ll be scoring some points for the first time since CPJ was here.

Headed in the right direction, imo.

Clemson has lost: Three of its last four games, four of its last seven, and three of those losses were by three scores.

Sounds like the end of the CPJ era after Beamer whined enough to get the blocking rules changed.

Agree. Also, this is the first game of the season, not the last. I suspect (at least I expect) that we will see weekly improvement along both lines. Apparently, we were missing a few key players on both.

I’m not saying it was ignored, just that he was a highly respected guy but our results never panned out. There wasn’t any P5 games where we were the dominant team. Maybe we were equals, but we never dominated. That includes Duke who never really out recruited us.

So how is it that our players couldn't put on 10-20lbs of muscle. Why is it our defense couldn't tackle? Is Duke talent that much better than Tech's? I thought the staff was installing tough, hard nosed, physical football. Didn't see that against L-ville.

I just don't get it.
I feel your pain. Our guys can't tackle and they're a half step slow. Or so it would appear.

Good to know. At least we know he's only got one year left.

Yeah, I was really responding to the guy you responded to, who said it was ignored.

We can only hope Key can do what Elko has done. Duke was predicted at the bottom of the ACC last year. They have had some fortune luck on their side lately. Riley Leonard will end up in the NFL like Daniel Jones. Some experts have Leonard the #3 QB in next years draft. Very strong opinion.

Duke had a lot of penalties and missed tackles last night, and honestly could not stop Clemson’s running game. The missed opportunities inside the 5 + 2 missed FG’s by Clemson made them one dimensional. Duke’s secondary when up 14 had the game in the bag.

Key was the low risk budget hire. We all know that by now. He is a fiery guy who without question loves GT. But we’ll know in 2 weeks how much this team has improved. Do I expect GT to beat Ole Miss? No. Do I expect them to at least stay in the game (down 14 or so) until the 4th quarter, yes. This was always going to be a transition year to me, and 6 wins should still be the goal. Will it be easy? No. After “overreaction” week 1, I’d switch UNC to the auto L and Clemson as winnable. But we’ll see how much Clemson rebounds when they host FSU in 3 weeks. UNC has an interesting schedule this year, next 3 weeks are App State, Minnesota, @ Pitt.

Back to GT, let’s just take a wait and see approach and see if there is improvement on both sides of the ball over the next month.

Clemson has been great when their Quarterbacks are great - Jordan, Watson and Lawrence - all three Georgians.
