Expansion

Offsetting $$ = $0 net

FYI…

Maybe. If they are offering to offset travel cost delta or are they upping the payout to keep everyone whole. No reason to take on new members if the existing members lose money.

The question is how many fans will still watch cfb (and how much) if their school gets left out. MTSU is the largest school in TN. Do they just become Vols fans? Do they tune in casually to watch their new team or is it a weekly thing.

GaSo is a good example. How many GaSo fans also watched uga? When GaSo moved up, how much did that affect uga’s ratings? My guess is not much. There is a difference between having virtually no chance at a title and being outright excluded.

Shrinking the fbs to 64 teams probably doesn’t drop the viewership of those 64 teams, but they won’t have to share any revenue with the excluded 64.

De facto, the schools you're talking about are already left out. They're not going to throw in the towel because their chance of winning a national championship went from 0.001% to 0%.

Current P5 schools being left out, that's where you witness the obliteration of a fan base.

Oregon and Washington just nuked their rival in a way we could only dream about

Expanding the ACC would be rewarding ineptitude. Just blow this thing up and let the chips fall where they may. At least then we will be in a league that knows what it’s doing. Emphasis on league, not conference.

Would you rather look back 10 years from now and be in the B1G or Big 12, or would you rather be playing East Directional State in a glorified G5 conference.
Good idea

They would have their own national championship to vie for just as they did in the FCS days. We would get back to split National Titles in the “doomsday scenario”

Good point, there are two groups on the have nots.

P5 schools:
Washington State is a case study. If they are left out, what does their fanbase do? They could play in the Mountain west or the could drop to FCS. Their hardcore fans will still follow the team. Their casual fans will either find another college team to follow (unlikely it is a former pac team) or they will drop college football altogether. My guess is the second. I think UW ratings will drop because WSU fans will have no interest in even casually watching their games.

So yes, there will be a reduction in viewership, at least in the near term. Twenty years from now WSU alum may watch UW games, but i doubt it will nearly as many as watch today.

Dropping the Wake level fanbases is barely a blip. WSU/OSU are big schools. It would be far worse in football centered schools like GT/FSU/Clem if they were left out.

Non-P5 schools:
GaSo is and App St are case studies. Why move up from where you are competing for championships to where your chances are infinitesimal? Why take on the extra expense?

From espn’s perspective, did the FBS viewer base increase beyond just the GaSo fans watching their own games?

Will GaSo fans watch games from a league where that aren’t allowed to compete?

We all know the ACC is lame, but it's probably best for us (and everyone except Clemson and FSU) if it survives intact a few more years. Not convinced we would land anywhere we would want to be if it collapsed today. So, I am all for expanding it and trying to compete with the Big 12 for #3. Invest in the program, start winning and putting ourselves in a good position.

To their own detriment. Being out west is lonely. Vast expanses of empty space between you and anywhere. Making those rivalries less important diminishes themselves.... The Apple Cup and Civil War (oops they changed it too insensitive) are actually something to get excited for.

They are going to be diminished, but Washington State and Oregon State will be fine. Boise State is the parallel to what they can be. Hopefully they will still be playing their OOC rivalry games.

I hope we don't continue to explore a transcontinental expansion for the ACC. In all honesty, I think in several years as TV money might dry up, maybe things will go back to a more regional flavor with a conference re-re-alignment.

i hear what you are saying but "lame" is too strong. Do we have the depth of SEC or Big18 - no. But our best teams can compete with their best teams and our middling teams like us, Pitt, VT can compete with upper level SEC teams in certain years. Pitt has been pretty competitive lately. VT and GT are down but were good and capable of rising again. So "lame" is strong. I believe the ACC is on par with the Big12 and maybe better. There are are some weak teams in Big12 - Colorado, Kansas and Iowa St and Arizonas' are not world beaters. ACC can be better than they are right now. Bad coaching has hurt conference. VT and GT are examples.

I think the ease of gambling isn’t talked about enough. If I put $50 - $100 on a game, I don’t care who is playing, I’ll watch. Even here in Georgia where gambling is “illegal”, it ain’t hard to place a bet. I used to struggle a decade ago to find a way to bet living here, now I have multiple outlets to easily place a wager. As a result, I watch a lot more games and bet on whatever is televised.
