firing a coach?

NC Jacket,

agree 100% with your post. The problem is when we win it is Tenuta and when we lose it is Gailey.

I would not trade Tenuta for any Def Coach in the country however he DID NOT get it done saturday.

If did not have to abandon the running game so early this game would have had a different outcome.

The Def is SO IMPORTANT b/c we have such a young qb.

It is good to see such good discussion regarding a topic.

It seems as though people accept the defense can't play at the level of Md., Auburn, NC St. week end and week out. Someone or something has to give. Our special teams have been horrendous in certain phases, and there seems to be little improvement.

We will agree to disagree on the athleticism of PJ. I state that he is legitimate D-1 and has beaten out Grant, Hatch, Woods, Eziemefe, Dixon, and any other threats. We have rarely had a guy with break away speed from the TB position, but everyone seems to think because he was a "walk-on" that is an excuse for our ineptness.

Our receivers consist of Nate, Freddie, Bilbo, Logan, McGuire, Dunlap, Thomas, and a few others. Levon played as a true freshman and hasn't developed. Why? Where are the rest of them?

My point is that your "excuses" are weak at best. Why didn't we sign more players? Why hasn't there been any improvement with the offense and special teams?

The worst defense against one of the worst offenses....this should be interesting Saturday. Former defensive coach in the NFL vs. former offensive coach from the NFL.

Rashaun Grant got hurt in H.S. and they say he is just now getting over it.

the reality is there is not a team in the top 25 that could have lost 10 player and still be in the top 25.

loss of Samson has REALLY hurt the offense. He looked great in the spring game.

The one thing that is indesputable is that CG knows talent. He had the wherewithal to move landry to dback and start our freshman qb.

The fact that the WR's are not playing well is a reflection on the players. Our coach has been coaching NFL WR's for the past 10 years. And that is the SHOW where they are all great.

When CG gets a chance to get his players in here we will know where we are at.

I just hope they can keep it together until then.

I think everyone should look at what they EXPECTED this year with regard to W's and L's.

GW, this is a set-up. I will ask some questions, and you can give your opinions freely.

Do you think Tech's offense would have performed better with Nix as the OC and in charge of the offense?

What do you think is the major problem with the offensive line play. There is no doubt, it has not performed up to the standards expected at the beginning of the year.

Do you think Tenuta has been a great defensive coach this year, good, mediocre, or completely hot and cold?

What do you think is the major reason the special teams has not performed well all year?

Do you see a common denominator among all of these areas and what, in your opinion, is the common denominator?

Without two obvious posters giving the standard lines, I say this has an opportunity to be a good debate. A good debate without animosity should be good for the board.

I have opened the door, speak freely. You now have the floor.

i like this thread. i just want to add one thing LawBee .. and i mostly agree with everything you have been saying.

you say we have a freshman quarterback so the defense has to help us win. ABSOLUTELY.

but you see, we also have an inexperienced DLine as well as inexperienced secondary, so the offense has to help us win.

we are too thin, too inexperienced in too many positions. we are thin in every position AND the only area where we have good experience is the LBs in D and the Line in O. that is it.

the defense has to help the offense and the offense has to help the defense. all the games we have won, that has happened. all the games we have lost, that has not happened.

BYU: The D was ok but not great. The O moved the ball but turned it over too much. LOSS.

Auburn: The D was great. The O did its job. WIN.

FSU: The D did its job. The O could not. LOSS.

Clemson: The D got savaged. The O got savaged too. LOSS.

Vandy: The D played decent. The O went asleep but woke up in time to win it. WIN.

NCSt: The D was great. The O was great. WIN.

Wake: The D was great. The O was good going to great in the 4th. WIN.

UMd: The D was great. The O was not good at all but did the job in the 4th. WIN.

Duke: The D got pushed around. The O got pushed around plus turnovers. LOSS.

Bottomline: We have to be perfect on both sides of the ball as well as on special teams to have a chance.

LawBee, I'm sure you see it that way and are just frustrated with these nabobs who are calling for Gailey's head. It is all related. The D and the O help each other. The only way we can win is when both perform.

The UNC game is very interesting. The whole team has to perform well to win. Not just the D, not just the O.

Curious, would it have been better to have lost to NC State or Maryland or Auburn in exchange for the Duke win? It appears good arguments could be made on good/bad coaching, are we inconsistent bad or good.

But either way, turnovers are killers. It is rare for any team to overcome -3 turnovers.

law, remember your comment about "no team in the top 25 could lose 10 players and still be in the top 25", when we play ugag who has since the 51-7 disaster lost their entire OL, starting RB, Top WR, maybe best ever DT and now his replacement, their entire LB corp, DE starter AND his replacement, along with 2 of their starting DBs. They will basically be bringing a team of Sophs to BDS.

If this happened to us we could not beat Georgia Southern or Furman. If, and it's a big If because I still think we can beat em, they drub us on the 29th...what will the apologists say? I will say it's time to examine the "PROGRAM" vs. just focusing on the HC.

Just curious, if they do beat us soundly, do you support the...oh well it's a rebuilding year argument? Just asking...not flameing, ok? THWG

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">GoldZ: Excellent rebuttal. Also I want to note that Georgia's sophmore guards have been out with injuries at times this year and one of them has seen a walk-on playing in his spot.

losing some guys for a few games is whole lot different than losing 10 for the year.

The fact we have a true freshman QB AND we lost our starting RB for the year has placed the offense at a huge disadvantage.

I stand by my statement that CG had done a HELLUVA job with the players he has. GT cannot take a 10 player hit and expect to prosper.

When posters don't want to give CG credit for UPSETTING AUBURN, MARYLAND, NCST, AND WAKE FORREST! It is clear that it is agenda driven.

When was the last time we had THREE UPSET VICTORIES in a row?

When you look at our thin ranks it is clear CG and staff have done a good job.

They have done a good job, but why not expect better?

They knew that Tony Hollings was not going to be here before the flunkgate debacle.

You are right that we cannot take a ten player hit, but we also can't recruit 20 a year and expect to survive. Throw in the 10 plus Gathers, Phillips, Ford, etc. and it is more like 15. Some of that is poor management. I just can't call beating Wake an upset. Auburn nor NC St. are exactly world beaters as the year has played out, and I think we'll beat UGA if Tereshinski the Third is the QB. I would just like to see some consistency!!!!!Consistent Improvement!!!

No law, not a few games. The losses I'm referencing are due to graduation or season ending injuries. THWG

if you want to count GRADUATION it is not TEN we also lost

JUST THE STARTERS

WATKINS
GLOVER
HELLER
ROBERTS-BLAKE
MANGET
GARY JOHNSON
WIMBUSH
HESTER
COLLINS
MUYRES
DYKE

So let me rephrase there is NO TEAM IN THE TOP25 that COULD LOSE TWENTY-ONE players and be successful

notice I am not even bringing up Tony Hollings who is IN THE NFL

If we had Tony on this team we may undefeated, if not we at least would have beaten F$U.

when you crunch the numbers it becomes even more remarkable!

Nice post again Law.

How can y'all compare Georgia's graduation losses to losing ten starters AFTER SIGNING DAY.

If Gailey had known Hollings was going to flunk out he might have signed a contingency back to go with Grant. As it was, 2003 was coming in with a pro quality RB, a slew of untested backups, a transfer from Morris Brown, and a Five Star question mark. Even with that, I guarantee Gailey did not turn away any RB's he thought could help us.

Granted, given the numbers we were looking at, I thought Chan should have taken some two-star sleeper guys that might not ever get off special teams because we had the slots and attrition happens. Gailey's approach shows just how long term his outlook is. (Unless you nabobs run him off to the green pastures called retirement before he can win us a MNC)

Some of the posters here are completely unrealistic.

If you think it's unrealistic to expect us to be competitive come Nov. 29th considering their losses vs. ours (graduation & injuries), then your level of expectations are simply lower than mine which is fine with me, but it doesn't make mine or others unrealistic. I think we should and will be competitive. They have lost for one reason or another 16-17 of the very best players on the team that beat us 51-7 and they are still in the top 10. The team they will bring to BDS is a Soph laden team (oops there goes the youth excuse). If they thump us this year in spite of that, then a realist would conclude something much bigger than flunkgate and CCG is going on here, and they would be right as rain.

Keep in mind that in addition to just the overall numbers involved, they lost their entire OL and LB corps, while our OL & LB corps have returned almost totally intact. Also as I posted above, it will no longer be CCG's first year or Reggie's either, plus at least as of now our injury situation is much better than theirs. Finally, we are home this year. This overwhelming elimination of excusitis has a lot of rose colored glass types really nervous about the 29th. THWG

Well, here goes.

First of all I don't give a crap about who lost how many guys. All you can do is play with what you have. Coaches try to make adjustments to cover any player deficiencies. Sometimes you can do it sometimes you can't.

I don't accept as fact that the defense can't play to a given level every game. IMO it should be easier for them than the offense, since there isn't the added responsibility of hanging onto the ball. I mean, the QB has to get it to the WR, the defense doesn't have to worry about that. But anyway, what happens IMO is that we sometimes get out-schemed. According to one of the Duke linemen Saturday, they knew we would run a lot of stunts inside to shut down the run. They just tried to concentrate on getting bodies on people and letting the DL go where they wanted. That opens holes naturally and they let the RBs pick their spots. They also concentrated on bouncing outside when they could to take advantage of the LBs going to the holes. I'm not sure if that's something you can adjust to or whether you rely on your players to fill and make the plays. Somebody with more football knowledge will have to take over from here.

On the offensive side, we were at a disadvantage when we got behind and it didn't appear the defense could shut them down. We're better running a ball conrol offense. And we were successful at it except for the mistakes that kept us out of the endzone. And some of those were caused by trying to score more quickly IMO. If we had been even or ahead and kept pounding them with PJ we would have worn them out and won going away IMO. In regards to style of play I'm not convinced we can play a different way. Personally I don't think we have the speed to open things up too much. We also have seen very few big plays from our special teams guys, and by that I mean plays where they beat people. That's what teams like OK, Miami, etc. have. People who beat people one on one. Jon always makes at least one guy miss. But he hasn't been able to take it to the house often. I'm particularly concerned about our WRs. I just don't see anybody with the attitude that any ball in the air is theirs.

ST is killing us. I can understand the kickoff and punting problems because we just haven't been kicking the ball well. The punting improved Sat. but the KOs were still too short and too low. I'm not saying our coverage team is great, but it's pretty hard to get downfield under a short, low kick. What I really can't figure out is our kick return team. How can you consistenly not even get back to the 20? I don't understand that at all.

Gold Z- UGA simply has better talent top to bottom than GT. They have recruited higher rated players and also have been able to bring in players from prep school which gives them an extra year from a physical maturity standpoint. The Administration at UGA is committed to competing at the highest level in football because they know that is what is important to their alumni base. The Administration at GT is not committed to competing in football. Unless that changes GT football will always be a roller coaster ride because the coaches and players are largely on their own. Dave Braine is part of the problem. Given the relative disinterest of the school administration in competing for championships, we need a very forceful AD who will constantly push the envelope to make GT football successful. Dave Braine is not thay guy.

83, exactly. See my post above in ref to examining the "PROGRAM" vs. just the HC. Thanks. THWG

Gold Z - The problem I have is, we could hire a new Athletic Director and a New Head Coach if that is what the powers that be are inclined to do and only incrementally improve GT Football. Without a commitment to winning by the school administration which IMO means expand the curriculum, give SA preferrential treatment in terms of scheduling, and have a academic support system that is second to none improvements will be small and the roller coaster ride which is GT football for the last 35 years will continue.

That's precisely my point. The program in it's entirety needs a major commitment. Nothing should make this more clear than ugag bringing a load of Sophs to BDS in 3 weeks and beating us. I'm not so sure they will, but if so it should send a message to all who care or are confused about how unlevel the playing field really is. More later on what is a very involved subject. THWG
